HUNTER who emigrated to the USA >from Russia in about
1880. There was another brother whose name I forget.
There were another Four brothers in the UK, Ike,

together with its English translation, and need to get the inscription
translated into Polish.

I brought the photo back with me >from a recent trip to Poland. A lovely
lady there wants to know what the inscription says. Her husband, father,

Jews during the Holocaust, and she has interested herself in all things
Jewish. If someone who has Polish fonts on his computer can send me the
Polish translation privately, I will really appreciate it. As a result of
my trip, I have enlarged my Polish vocabulary >from 20 words to at least 30.
Progress, but not quite enough!

When on Sept.15, 04 I responded to Michael Bernet's message about the
origin of names relating to the given name Moshe, Masha, Musya, etc., it was not
my intention to dispute what he wrote about the surname "Moskowitz"." I was
well aware that"Moskowitz" was not necessarily a toponym (place name).

I wanted only to correct his saying that "Jews were not allowed to live in
Moscow."

Rather than quote his sentence in its entirety,I should have excerpted that
phrase, because that is only comment I meant to contest. I am sorry if anyone
misunderstood me.

As Mr. Bernet later wrote in reply to my message, until their expulsion in
1981-92 Jews living in Moscow lived there in dreadful and precarious
conditions.

And I now add that the 1891 expulsion did not always exclude those few Jews
who were more comfortably situated in the city. Some of them were caught up
in the antisemites' dragnet.
