Dear Genners,
On a passenger list I found family members whose town of origin was given
as Jovre, Czechoslovakia. Does anyone know where this is located and what
the current name/location would be? I believe that other members of the same
family were >from Ungvar/ Uzhgorod. Could they be close to each other.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Temple Incorporation Papers #general

DonnDevine@...

In most US states during the 19th century, incorporations were recorded and
indexed in the local recorder's office, along with deeds and similar records.

Procedures for both incorporation and for recording varied >from state to
state, and also for secular and religious corporations, in the latter case
sometimes accommodating different forms of denominational organization or
governance..

New Jersey was one of the first states to adopt a general incorporation law,
that permitted any group of people to organize a corporation for any lawful
purpose, without making its formation a political issue.

If a group of people got together in 1892 and started a temple would they have
had to incorporate it? How would I search for it?

They got together in 1892 in Hoboken, New Jersey and started the congregation.
In 1902 they built a building for the congregation in Hoboken and >from various
reports I believe the temple burnt down in the 1950s. The name of the
congrgation was Moses Montifiore.

Dear Genners,
A friend of mine who hails >from BARSCHALL family in
Germany claims that a tradition in the family says
that the origin of this surname is an acronym of Ben
Rabbi Shlomo Hillel.Apparently there was a Rabbi of
that name in Breslau somewhere in mid 18th century.
Any idea??

Need Translation from English or Hebrew to Polish #galicia

Marjorie Rosenfeld <marjorierosenfeld@...>

I have posted on ViewMate a photo of a brief Hebrew gravestone inscription,
together with its English translation, and need to get the inscription
translated into Polish.

Supposedly (though it didn't work for me) you can go directly to the
enlarged image by clicking on: [MODERATOR NOTE: It worked fine for me]

http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=4710

Alternatively, you can view the image by going to:

http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html

There you will need to click on "Enter Viewing Section" and then go to File
VM4710 and click on the image to enlarge it.

I brought the photo back with me >from a recent trip to Poland. A lovely
lady there wants to know what the inscription says. Her husband, father,
and brothers were members of Zegota, the Polish organization that rescued
Jews during the Holocaust, and she has interested herself in all things
Jewish. If someone who has Polish fonts on his computer can send me the
Polish translation privately, I will really appreciate it. As a result of
my trip, I have enlarged my Polish vocabulary >from 20 words to at least 30.
Progress, but not quite enough!

A happy holiday and blessings for the New Year to all Gesher Galicia
members.

Clarification of my "Jews living in Moscow" message #general

NFatouros@...

When on Sept.15, 04 I responded to Michael Bernet's message about the
origin of names relating to the given name Moshe, Masha, Musya, etc., it was not
my intention to dispute what he wrote about the surname "Moskowitz"." I was
well aware that"Moskowitz" was not necessarily a toponym (place name).

I wanted only to correct his saying that "Jews were not allowed to live in
Moscow."

Rather than quote his sentence in its entirety,I should have excerpted that
phrase, because that is only comment I meant to contest. I am sorry if anyone
misunderstood me.

As Mr. Bernet later wrote in reply to my message, until their expulsion in
1981-92 Jews living in Moscow lived there in dreadful and precarious
conditions.

And I now add that the 1891 expulsion did not always exclude those few Jews
who were more comfortably situated in the city. Some of them were caught up
in the antisemites' dragnet.

Does anyone know when after 1900 the cemetery in Joniskelis was destroyed by
the Soviets? Or perhaps it happened on several occasions and any of the
approximate dates would be useful.

I have photographs >from the mid 1930s of tombstones >from what may be that
cemetery, so any help with a timeline is appreciated as the cemetery no
longer exists. Thank you.

(a) Josephine Rosenblum asks what "Zhaliakal'nis" means. That would be
"Green Hill" in Lithuanian

(b) We now have a good summary posted by Aryeh Lopiansky. Do I
understand that both the Aleksot cemetery and the "Green Hill" cemetery
are still intact, albeit in disarray? And could Aryeh tell us whether
the "Green Hill" cemetery is surrounded by a high cement wall?
