My ggreat grandfather Mordechai Schoenberg was also known as “Max” on his children’s marriage certificates, etc. I don’t think it would be a stretch for someone to refer to him as Marx but I would think Markus/Marcus would be a better match. However, one never knows with diminutives.

The literal translation of your name is simply true (wahr)  speaker (Sager), ie. teller of truth. Soothsayer is merely a secondary or implied meaning.

Hi David,

A search on Google Books for "Fritz BUKOFZER" finds his name mentioned in several books.  Perhaps something there may be a clue for you?

Also, there is a very large collection regarding people in the performing arts at The NY Public Library at Lincoln Center.
https://www.nypl.org/about/locations/lpa/special-collections

When the library fully re-opens (still closed to the public due to Covid)  than perhaps you can find someone in NYC who can stop by the library and check the index for Fritz BUKOFZER.

I went there years ago and found a surprisingly large folder on a relatively obscure actor and silent film performer that I was researching.

Also, have you checked newspapers for an obituary?  The NY Times, for example?

The mention of a "data breach" may be wrongly interpreted by many that their user data was actually stolen by some bad guy or group. This was not stated as such in the referenced source articles.

This was a "white hat" (good guy) exercise to look for weaknesses in the FTM database. The team found the weaknesses and supposedly the vendor corrected problem. These sort of white hat attacks are extremely useful and helpful in improving database security. Is it possible that some bad guy stole the data before the fix? Yes, but that was not stated or proven in the articles.

Fran,
Using the record number (M91), and the date, (24-Shevat), navigate back a few pages to frame #649 and you will find Chaim in the second record. The surname Bodner appears as part of the parents names.

I hope this helps,

According to InfoSecurity-magazine.com, Family Tree Maker had a data breach leaking 25 GB of data linked to users of the Family Tree Maker software. After being informed by WizCase the incident was remediated shortly thereafter.  Among the details leaked to the public-facing internet were email addresses, geolocation data, IP addresses, system user IDs, support messages and technical details. Some 60,000 users are thought to have been exposed in this privacy snafu.

The data breach also included 25 gigabytes of data mirrored from Ancestry.com LLC.

“The leak exposed technical details about the system’s backend, which could help attackers leverage multiple cyber-attacks on Software MacKiev and its associated companies,” it was claimed.

Researching CHAMUDIS/CHAMUDES/HAMUDIS/HAMUDES. #bessarabia

Pablo Libedinsky

My maternal grandfather was one of 12 siblings. He was born in Tatarbunar, Bessarabia in 1885.  His parents and 10 children migrated to Argentina in the early 1900's.
One brother (Simon) stayed in Russia and one (Boris) came to the US.
From Argentina my grandfather (Felipe) and a brother (Israel) moved to Chile when my mother and I were born.

Besides genealogy information, I'd like to find out the origin of the name CHAMUDIS (and its variations).  I've read that could be derived from "hamud" in Hebrew and I know what it means.

SZTYGLIC, STEIGLITZ, STIEGLITZ, STAGLIC OR SIMILAR. Searching ..... #poland

Barry Clarke

SZTYGLIC, STEIGLITZ, STIEGLITZ, STAGLIC OR SIMILAR died or was killed around 1881 to 1883 while in the army. He was married to my great grandmother MOLLY (MALA or MALKA?) SZKLARKIEWICZ OR SIMILAR. Their son, my grandfather Samuel, was born in April 1881. Molly's brother Max, per his UK Naturalization Certificate, was born in Jedwabne, so JEDWABNE/LOMSA district may be where the family were from. However, my father once mentioned KRAKOW as Samuel 's birthplace. It has since been pointed out that Krakow is unlikely as Molly's family were from Russian Poland. Also, a genealogist was unable to find any record of his birth in the Krakow region. It's quite possible, then, that my father was mistaken. Molly with baby Samuel emigrated to the UK shortly after her husband's death.

The point of this post is simply a shot-in-the-dark hoping someone has knowledge of a Sztyglic/Steiglitz or similar who died or was killed while in the army around 1881 to 1883!

If so, Eureka!

ViewMate Translation Request of 3 Documents in Polish #translation

One is the Marriage record of my Great-Great Grandparents. The second one is for the birth of their daughter, my Great-Grandmother. ViewMate Identification Request #belarus

Five professionally taken photos were found in my deceased father's collection.  The fact that he saved them would imply that they are family.  Unfortunately, no one else is around to help with the identification.  Please identify the subject, place or approximate year they were taken.  The family came from Slutsk and Chachnik.  The possible names are Sudzin, Duchan or Dukhan.  I am guessing the photos were taken between 1905 and 1915 in NYC.  Any help would be appreciated.

I've just watched with great interest Dr Sallyanne Sack's talk on names and one of her family names was Sulkin. Could there be a connection between us?

Hello,
I hope someone can help me.  I searched through Jewishgen and found the following record:

In the last column is a link(not here as this is only a picture).  The link takes me to a microfilm on Family search.  I went to image #655 on that microfilm, however, there is no Chaim Bodner on that page.   Can anyone tell me how to get to the correct page?
Thank you,
