Springa Freilinghi #romania

I recently found the married name of a distant relative in Birlad circa the 1890's.
I was wondering if anyone might suggest an English version of this name. The name
Springa Freilinghi is the Romanian version.

Hello GEnners,

On the behalf of the entire HFPJC staff, I'd like to wish you all a
Shana Tova and a Happy Jewish New Year.

WE at the HFPJC have been very involved with numerous cemetery projects
in
the last couple of months. Many have been completely restored in the last
couple of weeks, the gravestones numbered and photographed individually for
indexing and donation to the J-Gen JOWBR.
There are many projects which I know will be of interest to many of you,
so I'll compile a posting with brief description of each of them right after
the Holiday.

Once again, Shana Tova to you and your families!

All the best,

Toby Mendlowitz
Assistant Director

There is a book on Jewish Divorce by Avraham David Lavut (1814-1890), Rabbi
of Nikolaev/Mykolayiv, Ukraine. He was widely recognized as an authority
on
Halachic divorce procedure and the author of a learned treatise on the
subject entitled Kav Naki;. This work was reprinted in about 1950 by the
Lubavitch
Kehot Publication Society of New York. You may find that your local

I don't think this is in Chelsea. Tottenham Court Road
is in Bloomsbury (near the British Museum) and very well
known, with Bedford Square and Alfred Place close by.
My Jewish ancestors also lived in this area.

Try entering Bedford Square into www.streetmap.co.uk
to get a map.

I don't have the early census of London: hopefully someone
can help with this!

My gg-gf, Hyman Sampson Aaronson, on his marriage
certificate (20 May 1851), listed his residence as:
37 Alfred Place, Tottenham Ct. Rd., Bedford Square (in
Chelsea, I presume)

Kovno cemetery #lithuania

Eileen Douglas writes that she visited and filmed the cemetery in 1999.
So, if that is the same one I visited in 1979, then it is obviously
still intact and has not been razed (at least not in 1999). The question
is: Is it the same cemetery? And is it the one "On The Green Hill"?
Eileen saw an iron fence. I recall seeing a cement fence.

Kovno cemeteries #lithuania

Josephine Rosenblum

In February, 1995, the last member of my husband's ROSENBLUM family to leave
Lithuania told me about family members buried in "the Kaunas Cemetery" and
the "Zhaliakal'nis" Cemetery [his spelling]. I did not think to ask if they
were the same place or two different places.

I have photos that he took of the tombstones of several people. The oldest
stone is a tall limestone (?) shaft for a couple who died in 1905 and 1907.
It would look appropriate in an American cemetery. The inscription is in
Hebrew, but ROSENBLUM is in Latin letters.

All the stones were intact at the time that he photographed them, around
1992.

The ROSENBLUMs originally lived in Aleksotas and seem to have been prominent
members of that community.

I hope someone can translate the name Zhaliakal'nis.

Final Word on Kovno Cemetaries #lithuania

Aryeh Lopiansky <alop@...>

Dear All,
My cousin (Yankel Lopiansky) who resides today in Slabodka happens to be
now in Israel, so I called him to clarify everything. He said as follows:
There were four cemetaries in the Kovno area. The "greener barg" ("Green
hill") cemetary, one in Panemuna, one in Slabodka, and one in Aleksot.
There was also a new cemetary duing WW II called the "ghetto cemetary". The
only decently kept and functioning cemetary today is in Aleksot. Rabbi
Elchonon Spector and his son were moved there, and the last Kovnor Rov, Rav
Schapiro is buried there, amongst others. The ghetto cemetary was
destroyed. Also the Slabodko cemetary was destroyed (in 1991). The Panemuma
cemetary has only a few tombstones left and is in disarray. Likewise the
"greener barg" cemetary.

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy New Year,
Aryeh Lopiansky

Sosla #lithuania

Olga Zabludoff <oz@...>

Ross Weintraub asked whether there is another name for the shtetl Sosla (in
Lithuania). (September 14 LitvakSIG digest).

This response is an educated guess. I ran across a reference to "Sosla" in
my research, and after agonizing, I concluded that the current name of the
town is Zasliai (Zhusli in Yiddish). I suspect that Sosla was a variant
name.
