Re: Burials in South Africa #southafrica

Fine Family <mafine@...>

Hi,

In the course of my genealogical research I came a across two burials in
South Africa that were in the JOWBR database that seemed like they may
be family members. Could anyone suggest someway for me to get
additional information about these people?

Here is the information I found:

Sam Ber Fine died June 3rd, 1985
Buried: Chevra Kadisha Cemetery, Johannesburg

Maurice Isaac Fine died May 2nd, 1961
Buried Stellawood Cemetery, Durban

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Mordechai Fine

In May my cousin and I spent ten days in Iasi finding the past and creating a
visual document for future generations. We had a wonderful driver/translator who
I'd be happy to recommend. We couldn't have done it without him.

Location of Kovno cemetery remains #lithuania

Rabjamarx@...

I do not believe that the remains >from one of the Kovno cemeteries were
reburied in Panemune. Most certainly, all evidence indicates that >from
the mid-1940's until 1993, there were no burials in that cemetery.

In 1990, when I visited the old Panemune cemetery on the bank of the
Niemon river, the area was completely overgrown and there were only
two gravestones to be found, which had been half-buried in the ground for
a number of years.. In 1993, those two remaining gravestones were set
up again and a monument was placed at the entrance, written in Lithuanian,
Hebrew and Yiddish, identifying the area as the old Jewish cemetery. I do
not believe that, since 1993, any new burials have occured there.
Perhaps Slobodka/ Vilijiampole across the river should be sought as a
possible site for the relocation?

Kovno Cemetery #lithuania

Eileen Douglas Israel <faithdouglas@...>

Dear Litvak/SIGers, I am watching this discussion on the cemetery in
Kovno and believe it may be what is called the Green Hill Cemetery.
Regina Kopelevich brought me there on my trip to Kovno in 1999 so I
could film the search for my greatgrandmother's grave for the
documentary My Grandfather's House. Yes, the cemetery was a mess.
Tombstones were overturned. Weeds covered everything since it was
summer. But the place was surrounded by a standing black iron fence with
Jewish Star of Davids worked into the grilling and it would be possible
for some gravestones to be identified, particularly those in the older
section, under a grove of trees, where the tombstones are likely to
still be standing. So with "grin" in your description, I propose that
you could be thinking of the Green Hill cemetery. Eileen Douglas

I understand that there are/were two Jewish cemeteries, one "on the
hill" and another one in Aleksot (Aleksotas). That may explain some of
the confusion. The question is, if one of them was razed, which one was
it?

I just learned that Rivka PICKHOLZ of Buczacz married Binyamin Zev BERNSTEIN
of Radautz (Bukovina) and that they had five children there in the period 1901-
1908. Descendants of two of those children live in Israel. A third was killed in the
Shoah and two others had no children.

I see no listing for BERNSTEIN >from Radautz in JGFF.

I would be pleased to hear if anyone overlaps with this family.

Searching for descendants of HALPER(I)N immigrants to USA #ukraine

Arthurh <arthurh@...>

Dear fellow Ukrainers,

I'm searching for the grandchildren of Alimelach HALPER(I)N born ab.1850 in
Glinyany, near L'vov, or in Komenetz Podolski, Podolia, Ukraine, died 29 Dec
1907 in Kamentz Podolski. He married Tzippota UnknownFamilyName and they
had 8 children - 5 of whom came to the U. S. A. via Ellis Island 1900 to
1924. I'm searching for the descendants of these five children. These 5 are
surely no longer alive so I'm searching for their descendants, who are
probably still in "America". I want to contact these, my first cousins, for
data for our Family Tree. Their parents/grandparents were:-

1. Hirsch HALPERN, born ~1877 in Kamenetz Podolski, Arrived in New York
on July 5, 1900 on SS Noorland >from Antwerp. Died ~1948 in U.S.A.?.

2. Zelig HALPERN, born ~1879 in Kamenetz Podolski. Came via Ellis Island
in 1904 aged 26. Died ~1950 in U.S.A.?.

My father Samuel HALPERN was born 1884 in Kamenetz Podolski. Came to the
U.S.A. via Ellis Island >from Bremen to New York on Dec. 2, 1904 on SS
Chemnitz, aged 20. He was going to Wolf Spitalnick, 1261 Heury St., NYC. He
migrated to Montreal, married Ida Chiah GOLDSMAN there in 1914. I have all
their and their descendant's data. The other two of Alimelach's children -
Joel and Mordichai HALPERN remained in Kamenetz, married and had children
