Hi,
I'd like to know if SCHIEBER and SHIEBAR are discrete surnames or merely spelling variants of the same name. Also, perhaps someone can tell me their respective meanings. Please respond privately. Thank you in advance. Deborah Dworski Arlington, Virginia USA

Looking for the Doctors FRIEDMAN from Philadelphia, PA
#general
Ricki L. Zunk <nockbockle@...>
After many years of searching for members of my mother's COHAN-COPLIN-COPELAND
family >from Philadelphia, PA, I finally got a small piece of information about a few cousins by the name of FRIEDMAN. The problem is that the addresses and phone numbers I have are no longer viable. After begging and pleading with every source I could find, I was finally told that DR. Neil FRIEDMAN and DR. Stuart FRIEDMAN (sons of Charles FRIEDMAN and Elaine RAND) are now "both living in the Greater Philadelphia area." Charles FRIEDMAN (son of Tillie COPLIN and Joseph FRIEDMAN) was a teacher and then a school principal in the Philadelphia school system. I know that Charles and Elaine lived in the area near Temple Stadium in the 1950s. I think that Charles died some time ago, and Elaine remarried (don't know her "new" husband's surname). I don't know if Elaine is still alive or not. A cousin who used to be in contact with the family (last contact about 6-7 yrs. ago) told me that Dr. Neil FRIEDMAN (now about 57 years of age, graduated >from Lower Merion H.S.) used to live in Albuquerque, NM, but now he may live "somewhere in the Philly area." And, she said that Dr. Stuart FRIEDMAN (a few years younger than his brother Neil) is also living "somewhere in the Philly area." Beyond that, she could not say. So, since I have not been able to find these men through family members or through public records that I can access >from 1200 miles away, I took the chance that maybe someone who belongs to this discussion group just might know or know about these men, and hopefully help me make contact with either or both of them. If anyone reading this post can shed ANY light on these folks, please contact me privately at nockbockle@mindspring.com , and fill me in on whatever you might know. Thanks in advance, (Mrs.) Ricki L. Seeking Information in France
#general
Thomas F. Weiss
Dear fellow JGenners,
I need your advice and your help. Here is my story. For 20 months during 1940-1941, my mother and I were refugees in Europe. Most of that time was spent in France awaiting various documents required to escape Europe. We lived in Neris-les-Bains and Marseille. In October 1941, when I was about 6 years old, my mother and I tried to leave France and enter Spain via the Pyrenees Mountains, a common escape route. We were arrested in Cerbere by customs officers who worked out of the civil court in Ceret. I have a copy of the report of the arresting officers. We spent some time in jail and were eventually released. I have written to various agencies in France to try to learn more about our lives in France. At first I sent emails and letters in English and received few response. Then, with the help of a friend, I sent emails and letters in French. I have had little or no luck in getting any information. I have written to the mayor's office in Neris-les-Bains to see if they had an records of our lives there. I wrote to civil offices in Cerbere and Ceret. I did get one reponse to an email which said that information about arrest and court proceedings might be found in archives located in Perpignan. I wrote to the archives in French and have received no response. I am stuck. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might get further information? I am writing a family history for my grandchildren and would like to include as much factual information as I can. Many thanks for your consideration, -- Tom Weiss Newton, MA USA tfweiss@mit.edu

Does the Surname "Thisty" Originate in Roumania
#general
Stein Lewis
My maternal ggm was Esther Thisty. I have not been able to identify anyone of
that name using JRI-Poland. I think that my ggf served in Roumania during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78; and his sister married the well know Roumanian born cantor, Israel Kupfer, which leads me to wonder if Thisty could have been a family in Roumania. Lewis Stein Boynton Beach, FL *** MODERATOR NOTE: One of JewishGen's most heavily visited sites is the JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF) and family connections are being made more and more frequently. If you have not already done so, please log onto www.jewishgen.org/jgff and using the ENTER/MODIFY procedure enter and register all the surnames of interest to your family research. As you learn about more names and places of origin, they can always be added, but only **you** can keep your own listings up to date.

Seeking Info & Descendents of Benny KATZ of NYC

Marlene Bishow <mlbishow@...>
Hi Genners:
Seeking descendents of Benny (Benjamin) Katz. He was living in 712-14 East 6th Street, NYC in September, 1907 when nephew, Sam (aka Shimon) Katz came to US. He may have had a limp and wrote beautiful calligraphy. He was living in the early 1930's, as my father (bron 1923) remembers him. We have no photographs of him. Sam Katz was my grandfather and he lived for a time with his uncle. Benny was the son of Aaron and Rose Katz of Zuravno, Galicia, Austria. His brothers were Leo, Max and Jacob. He may have been the only one of the brothers to come to the US, although many nieces and nephews came between 1907 and 1921.
