this area- NUSBAUM is a German name. When Grajewo and her
surrounding area were Litvak area....Other names of this

Re; Seeking Charles Randolph STRAUSS #general

Celia Male <celiamale@...>

Harry Donaldson >from Australia [2 July 2004] is trying to trace the birth
place of his grandfather Charles Randolph STRAUSS. His father's name was
Gutlob STRAUSS [Bootmaker]. Charles Randolph married a Jane DONALDSON
in 1904 in South Shields, Co Durham England. He stated his age as 34
which would put his date of birth at 1870.

Well it may be a very strange coincindence, but there is a Charles STRAUSS,
shoe manufacturer aged 33 in the 1881 census of England and Wales living
in Westgate [Newcastle], Northumberland which is of course not far from
South Shields. He is listed as employing 7 hands. He was born in London.
In the 1871 census we can see him living with a German FRANKLE family
in Westgate, as a lodger. The FRANKLES were involved in the shoe business.
>from their first names, I assume they were a Jewish family.

As for an 18 year old Jane DONALDSON she can be seen in the 1891 census
living with her widowed mother Hannah [grocery and provision merchant
aged 56] in South Shields. It may be possible to trace the Donaldsons.

I suppose it is possible that Charles STRAUSS had a namesake not so many
miles away also working in the shoe business or perhaps a German cousin
twenty years his junior came over to be one of his assistants - or last but
not least, we have one of those strange coincidences one finds in genealogy
and there is no connnection at all between the older Charles STRAUSS in the
census and Harry's Charles STRAUSS a few years later!

Last but not least there is a link on this website to a
Carl Gottlob STRAUSS b.31 Oct 1842, in Esslingen, Germany
d.27 Oct 1847 see: http://members.aol.com/jthomasl/f19.htm
This STRAUSS is most unlikely to have been Jewish.

Argentine burials #general

A few weeks ago, someone mentioned a wonderful site that
allows look-ups of the Jewish burials in Argentina.
I got some very useful results, but now cannot find the site.
I misplaced the URL and cannot find it in searches
of JewishGen archives, google or anyplace else.

Can someone post the URL again? It was part of AMIA,
but there don't seem to be links >from their site either.

FREEDMAN of Pinsk #belarus

alexrath <alexrath@...>

I am looking for the relatives of the FREEDMAN family. My grandparents,
Rose and Israel, had three children: Mark, Pinkus and Frima (Fima). Israel
died at the turn of the century (1900) and Rose, Frima, Mark and Pinkus
emigrated through Ellis Island, via Liverpool between 1905 and 1910. We
have the ship manifests for Mark and Pinkus. (the Lucania)

The family owned or managed a sugar beet farm. They were well educated and
had tutors in the summers. Pinkus was in the Cavalry as he was an
accomplished horseman. He studied to be a feltcher (pharmacist), I also know
that they ice skated on the canal in the winter.
In the US, only Pinkus (Paul) had children

There must be other members of the family that we do not know about

We hope to find the relatives of Rose and Israel. We do not know Rose's
family name.

Thank you,

searching CHIMES/CHAIMOWITZ in Lithuania & BENONI #general

susan <chimes2weiner@...>

I am researching my CHIMES (originally CHAIMOWITZ)
family history.

My CHAIMOWITZ family came >from Krekenava, Lithuania.
Ggf Yankel Benzel CHAIMOWITZ, later known as Jacob Bernard CHIMES,
settled in Benoni, South Africa.

According to family legend and a Daily Rand obituary,
he owned the Chimes Hotel and Gold Mine in Benoni. However,
local archives in Benoni don't support those connections.
I visited the Chimes Hotel, now a tavern, a few years ago
during a trip to South Africa. I also visited a family
that formerly owned the hotel, the local synagogue and
the local history museum. Folks were very friendly and
helpful, but I didn't learn anything new.

Re: More Success in the Maltinksy-Pittsburgh Realm #general

Maria <elena@...>

Dear all:

Thanks to a website of old newspapers online and some Pittsburgh
directory microfilms, I have discovered more information about the
Pittsburgh branch of the Maltinsky clan, and put it out for anyone
acquainted to please feel free to get in touch with me:

Abram Maltinsky, of Rezhitsa Latvia, came to the US through Ellis Island
and settled in Braddock, PA, and then Pittsburgh, alongside his older
brother Samuel, who had arrived around 1888. Sam was a jeweler and
Abram followed in his footsteps for a while.

Around 1910, both Maltinsky brothers moved to Pittsburgh, where Sam
settled quickly and permanently (until his death in 1928) at the same
address and the same business as President of Crescent Jewelers. Abram
started out with him, it appears, but soon tried several independent
and/or alternate jewelry-salesman positions, sometimes with a pair of
brothers surnamed Reichbaum, who lived at the William Penn Hotel.

Between 1910 and 1914, Abram married into the Sablodowsky family, aka
Sable. His wife was Etta. Etta's older brother was Daniel, who became
Daniel Sable, the chief surgeon City Department of Public Safety,
Medical Division in Pittsburgh.

Abram changed his name >from Maltinsky to Mallan. Sometimes he and Etta
lived at the same address as Daniel Sable; sometimes at a different
address, sometimes at two different addresses. On two occasions in the
directories, Etta describes herself as a widow even though Abram is
right there in the book, just at another address. In 1917 and 1918
Abram was Albert Mallan.

In 1914, their son Lazarus was born, and two years later, Jack. Jack
became a Master Sergeant in WWII and died in Florida, in 1964. Lazarus
changed his name to Lloyd. He had an active life: radio communications
officer in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in Spain >from 1937-38; translator
of Spanish poetry, author of at least one article on Lorca in the New
York Times, and a person of rather odd views concerning Lunik and
smoking. He died in 1973, but his widow seems to alive still.

If any of this strikes a bell with anyone, please do feel free to
contact me!
