Newbie for Hungary #hungary

Jeff Malka <malkajef@...>

I am at the start of my Hungary research and would like some advice. I am
researching the

RIEDERMAN family of Turia Remete (near Perecin and Uzhorod) and the

ORNSTEIN/ORENSTEIN family of Komoroew (near Szerednye).

Both villages were Hungarian at the beginning of the 20th century and these
families spoke Magyar and listed themselves as Hungarian. Does JewishGen
have useful databases for these shtetlach? Anything useful I should look for
at the Mormons? I unfortunately cannot read Hungarian and one of my early
tasks would obviously need to be to find out what "Riederman" and "Ornstein"
look like when written in Hungarian registers.

Any and all advice greatly appreciated especially where the archives for
these 2 towns would be located.

Thank you.

Jeff Malka

Moderator: Both of the places you are seeking were in Ung megye (county), which became part of the new country of Czechoslovakia after the 1921 Treaty of Trianon. The western part of Ung is now in Slovakia. Ungvar, now Uzhgorod, and the eastern part of the county are in the Ukraine. There was a place called Remete in the Szobrancz jaras (district) west of Ungvar. Komorocz was closer to Szerednye in the Ungvar district. The All-Hungary Database includes 1848 census records >from this part of Ung megye. Try using the Soundex alternative to search your names. The FHL has not yet obtained permission to film records in the Uzhorod archives, where many of the Jewish records >from Ung megye now reside.

I have a posting out to try to find my two aunts lost during the war.
My father has tried the usual sources - Red Cross...
Is there a way of spreading the word that some one is looking for them and
anyone with information should contact me?
Below is my original posting.
Thanks,

I am seeking anyone with knowledge of the whereabouts of Reizel and
Monsey FEINTUCH. They were taken >from Csikszensimon to a mini ghetto
in Tusnad. (The ghetto was in the Tree Husar Hotel.) This was reported
by Jakob Wiesel. >from there he does not know what happened to these
girls. The inhabitants of the Tusnad ghetto were moved to Csikzentgyorgy
(Ciucsingeorgiu), then to Sasregen and >from there to Birkenau.
If anyone knows of their demise or possible escape to safety or any
information along the way please contact me - Victor Feintuch

BASCH and BERNSTEIN from Budapest #hungary

aev@...

Hi fellow H-siggers

Trying to figure out adoption/foster parent relationship and get
confirming documents on:

Olga BASCH married to Dr. Georg BASCH sent letter >from Budapest in 1957
to my dad - Emerick Blum in Cleveland, Ohio. She signed it "Aunt Olga".
In 1957, she was 63 years old and in the hospital had a gallstone
operation; her husband was still alive.

Relationship: Olga writes that her father DR. JAKOB BERNSTEIN a
physician and mother REGINA BERNSTEIN "educated" my paternal grandfather
(FRANK/VINCENT BLUM/BLOOM). Perhaps one of them was a teacher? She writes
that Frank/Vincent was an orphan and he was like a brother to her- Olga;
and that Frank/Vincent maintained a permanent correspondence with her
-Olga's mother. (Frank died in 1944 in Cleveland)

Return address on her letter is:
Mrs. Dr. Georg BASCH
Budapest VI Siv (might be incorrect, hard to read) utca 33 III 2 Hungary

Return address on a letter >from Dr. BERNSTEINNE in 1927:
ozv. Dr. Bernsteinne, VI., Sziv-u 69 Budapest

My questions:
1. How do I find information on this possible adoption?
Frank/Vincent was supposedly born in Fehrmeghe Hungary 12 Feb
1883/1880
He was a waiter in a restaurant in Budapest prior to leaving for
the US in 1909.
Supposed parents: Avram/Adolph Blum Johanna ?
siblings: brother Ference
sister Ilona - ? married
SHUYLER/SCHULER
sister Gizela

2. How can the 1927 and 1957 addresses in Budapest be helpful? Also, I
see references to different sections or districts in Budapest and records
seem to be arranged accordingly - so what district and/or section did
these people reside in?

3. Of course, if any of you know anything about this family, please
respond.

As, always your help and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Uzghorod cemetery list #hungary

Jeff Malka <malkajef@...>

Hi,

I am new to the Hungarian SIG and therefore do not know if this is already
well known or not, but, while at the CAHJP in Jerusalem, I came across a
hand written complete register of the Jewish cemetery of Uzghorod. Most of
it (about 200 hundred pages) is written in cursive Hebrew. I took digital
photos of a few representative pages which I can post on the web for others
to see.

It shows the cemetery divided into 4 parts and the list is also divided into
4 parts. The whole thing is bound into a book.

Is this cemetery register already known and translated? If not, is there
interest in translating it's list into English and into JOWBR?

The title of the register is
"AZ UNGVARI IZRAELITA TEMETON
NYUGVO HALLOTTAINAK
HEBER NYELVEN VEZETTET
KATASTERI KONYVE

LIST OF THOSE BURIED
IN THE JEWISH CEMETERY
OF UNGVAR (UZHOROD, SUBCARPATHIAN UKRAINE)"

and it was deposited by Reisman Emanuel

Hi,

If anyone has access to a Budapest telephone directory >from the 1960s,
could you please look up Vidor (family name) Gyorgy ( First name) for me.
Please reply to me. Thanks. I did find an address and phone number when I
was there in the mid-sixties. The number in the current directory is a

I start with
EDUARD ELIAS born 1837 in Obuda/Budapest.. Married to Katharina Blau,
then to Josephine Weis(z)
Loads of children, mainly girls including my grandfather Miksa/Max who
settled in Vienna.
My father Eduard and his brother Hans settled in London following the
Dachau 1938/Kitchener Camp Richborough/Isle of Man/Canada wartime routine.

Any guidance /leads on my ancestors who were I believe wholesale grain
merchants WELCOMED.........
So if anyone on this SIG has inf on ELIAS which can be slotted

Does anyone have an idea if these records are being added to or is this it?
I couldn't find my family who emigrated to Australia in 1957 by way of
Trieste after escaping in the 1956 uprising.

Re: CLARIFICATION OF NAME #hungary

Robert Neu

Hi,
If it is a first name (I suppose there are other entries that give a
clue), it could be "Andor" (for Andrew.

What is and where is the 1829 Urbarium available?

Thanks
