INTRO- Was William Henry ADLER Germany/South Africa/London - Jewish?? #germany

Caroline <cfb@...>

Dear GerSig,
I have just joined this group and only been researching my genealogy
sporadically over the last few months - so apologise for any naivity in advance.

I'm >from Lancaster, England and don't speak any other languages - as yet. I
have only recently discovered that my great, great grandfather was a German
Jew (William Henry ADLER) although I'm told he probably wasn't practising.
He was born in Germany but also lived in South Africa where he discovered
gold (he was an explorer) and built the first 2-storey house in J'burg) and
then London. He married a Cecaelia Virgotinni (Italian) and their daughter
Myra Rosa Adler was my great-grandmother.

My great, great, grandfather - William Henry ADLER is listed in the 1901
census as below. However, I have been asked whether I'm sure he really as
a Jew. My source is an aunt who says he was a non-practising Jew. Does
anyone have any advice as to how I might confirm this - ultimately trace his
parents in Germany I guess?

Also, what defines someone as a Jew - especially if they were born in
Germany and not practising? Would his parents have to have come from
Israel/or be practising Jews? The knowledge I have so far is as follows:

William Henry ADLER (1845- ?) married Cecaelia Virgotinni 1854-? (Italian)
Children : Cecil G. 1876-? (architect's clerk);
Benjamin H. 1879-? (Lieutenant Royal Fusiliers);
Myra Rosa Adler 1880-1932 married Roger Raoul-Duval 1877-1917 (French)
Children: Raymonde Peace Audrey Raoul-Duval (my grandmother) & Jacques Raoul-Duval

Sources included:

In April, 2004, when I saw, in person, Boleslaw Szenicer, who now is
President of Gmina Wyznaniowa Starozakonnych w RP (Jewish Old Testament

he charged me $20 for each tombstone that he researched. He took me and

Warsaw cemetery photos? #warsaw #poland

Hadassah Lipsius <kesher@...>

When Boleslaw left the cemetery, he took his files with him. He is
still around and continues to go into the cemetery to take photos. The
new director in the cemetery Israel Szpilman has been creating a new
database of the cemetery gravestones. When I visited in March, he was
able to find on his database the information on a tombstone of my
great-great grandmother which was not on the other database.

In either case, I do not want to get involved in the politics of the
Warsaw cemetery but I hope pretty soon to announce the availability of
the other Warsaw Cemetery database on JRI-Poland.

Hadassah Lipsius

<Does anyone know whether it is still possible to obtain photos of
headstones
in the Warsaw Jewish cemetery? When Boleslaw Szenicker (sp?) was the
cemetery caretaker, he would (for a fee) take photos of the headstones
which
he had indexed. I don't know whether he still does that, and if he
does,
how to reach him.

Thanks to the help of David Goldman, the archive's response to my inquiry
has been translated, so I no longer need assistance. I also appreciate the
other offers of help that I received. Since it may be of general interest,
I am posting the translation of part of the response. I had asked whether
the Lutsk archive had Jewish birth records >from Lutsk for 1852 (as indicated
on Miriam Weiner's www.rtrfoundation.org website). Archive Director
Volodymyr Mykolaiovych Hyka responded that "the metric records of Jewish
citizens was in part transferred for safekeeping. The metric records of 1852
in the documents of the archive do not exist." Unfortunately, neither the
part that was transferred nor its new location were specified. I will
recontact the archive to try to determine this, and I will gladly inform
anyone who is interested of the result.

I discovered today the new Lodz Ghetto data base and found some
interesting results. Three members of the Kronman family all
living at the same ghetto ghetto address also had the same
address in Lodz, Adolf Hitler Strasse. This is clearly not
the original name but the name given to the street by the
Germans. However, there does not seem to be any such street as
Adolph Hitler Strasse in the Lodz street name index.
Both the original and German names are given for large number
of streets, but there is no mention of the German
name. Does any one know what the original name was?
I would be grateful for this information.
