Positive Developments-Restoration of Pezinok Cemetery #hungary

hfpjc

Fellow Genners,

Once again I'm delighted to be able to share with you that we at the
Heritage Foundation for Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries (HFPJC) are
currently involved in the restoration of yet another cemetery, this time in
Pezinok, Slovakia.

The Jewish cemetery in Pezinok has a rather unfortunate history. After WWII,
the property was privatized and currently serves as some gentleman's
backyard. To be more exact, the original cemetery is divided into 3
sections, but only one section actually resembles a cemetery. The story is
rather convoluted, but in a nutshell, this is it:

When our rep arrived there he was greeted by a sorry sight; the lion's
share of the visible tombstones were piled atop each other and stacked in
various areas of the cemetery. Further inquiries revealed that
unfortunately, most of the tombstones >from the other 2 sections had been
relocated to this section in a rather haphazard manner. The other two parts
of the backyard were beautifully landscaped and, of course, bereft of
headstones.

To their credit, the owner and his wife were very reasonable and
accommodating, and after some negotiating, it was agreed that backyard #1
will be cleaned thoroughly and all the tombstones recemented and erected.
They also agreed to allow several tombstones to be erected in in the other
two backyards. Of course, it would then be necessary to erect a monument
commemmorating the deceased Jews of Pezinok (and those deported in WWII) and
more importantly, to inform visitors of the situation, stating that the
accuracy of the headstone positions cannot be guaranteed.

The restoration project of the Pezinok cemetery was launched a couple of
weeks ago. Our Hungarian rep Mr. Szabo, and his entire staff, outdid
themselves; he and his crew of devoted laborers toiled for days to try and
match the hundreds of puzzle-like fragments of the headstones and
recement/re-erect them in a most orderly fashion. (see photos on viewmate:
http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=4162
from looking at the photos, it is hard to believe that this cemetery had
been littered with stockpiles of shattered tombstones only a few weeks ago!
(for photos and/or detailed description contact us via e-mail)

It is emblematic of the significance of this sacred work that the
surrounding neighbors were so impressed with the sudden attention and
concern towards our ancestors' resting place, that a couple of amiable
fellows actually approached the HFPJC members and informed them that since
these "stones"
are apparently of great importance to him, they know of several more that
are concentrated in some obscure spot hitherto unknown to us! Of course,
they led him to the place, and "those stones" will be rightfully erected in
the cemetery.

All the same, there is still much work to be done. However, all our attempts
at determining the precise locations of the gravestones were futile. If
somebody out there has any information which might be helpful, or perhaps an
old photograph of the cemetery, we'd be extremely grateful if you could
contact us via e-mail (hfpjc@thejnet.com) or telephone XXXXXXXX.

We appreciate your assistance and cooperation. May the merit of rescuing and
preserving the dignity and honor of our ancestors bless all your endeavors.

All the best,

RE: Szelencze

I did just check the Where Once We Walked, and there is a town called Szeklencze, now called Sokirnitsa, Ukraine. Don't know if that helps.

I will also write separately, as I now reread your message, and see the Malvin Neuman name. I have one of these too...

with it?

Was There a Census Between 1825 and 1850/UHLFELDER? #germany

Laberge, Ronald H. <rhlaberge@...>

Many thanks to everyone who helped me on the Bamberg Matrikeln and the
Names Jondeph, etc. Great stuff. Anyone who has recieved help from
others, knows the wonderful feeling and joy of finding another piece to
the puzzle of family heritage.

My great grandfather Jacob UHLFELDER son of David J? UHLFELDER was born
February 15, 1828 in or near Dormitz (north east of Erlangen). He
emigrated about 1848 to the USA. I am, therefore, searching for any
census or record in Germany or Bavaria which would have included the
Bamberg/Erlangen/Ermreuth/Dormitz area and which might have shown my
Jacob before he left the land of his birth.

Dear Genners -

Anyone with an Australian connection may wish to be reminded of
the existence of the National Archives of Australia.

These archives contain a vast array of information of Jewish and
general interest, including migration records, aliens
registration records and passenger ship arrivals. The records are
partially searchable via the web.

Pinsker Branch 210 of the Workmans Circle #general

Jerome Seligsohn <jselig1315@...>

This is the third Pinsk landsmanshaft listed on the
Belarus website. The first was a benevolent society,
the second a group of fur workers, and the latest a
workmans circle. This should give those interested in
the Pinsk area a wider prespective of Pinskers in
America.
I have not limited this message to the Belarus website
because Pinsk is as much associated with Poland as
with its present eastern roots. We often see
correspondents seeking their roots in Pinsk. I wonder
if they consult the Pinsk landmanshaft name lists
found on the Belarus website.
Particularly useful on this latest name list is the
date that the member joined the Circle. Some names
joined before 1905 which might place their date of
birth in the 1870's. I woulde suggest that all who
joined prior to 1925 could be cross checked on the
Ellis Island database. Yopu already have Pinsk as the
city of origin.

I found my great-aunt's listing in the typed NYC Passenger Arrival records

Are these indications of other travels abroad?
