Hi Michael,

I say the answer is yes, the names Karel and Jacob are associated. I have a member of my Oberlander family who is reported as Karel in vital records, and according to family reports, his name was Kopel. You are probably aware that Kopel is dimunitive of Jacob, hence the connection. Take care, Adam Smith Searching: OBERLANDER; Chinadievo, Nove Davidkove, Ukraine, Tarpa, Hungary TAMBOR: Nankovo, Khust, Ukraine, Nyiregyhaza, Hungary SAPSOWITZ/SAPSZOVICS: Horincovo, Iza, Lipsha, Khust, Ukraine

Searchable Online City Directories
#general
Adelle Gloger
Dear Genners,
As often happens, when looking for one thing we find something else. Recently I found searchable city directories on < http://www.distantcousin.com/ > Searches and results are *free* ! The images are very good quality. Most states are represented with selected cities. On the main page the default search facility is "whole site." Using this option and typing in a surname will bring up *all* hits on the site for that name. A Jewish Cemetery in Monmouth County, NJ has photos of the headstones. There are also listings of MIA / KIA and casualties of various conflicts -- Korea, Vietnam, etc. Hopefully, this site will be useful to many on this list. Fabio Zyserman <zyserman@...>
Hi all,
I'm new to this list, and I would like to know if someone knows about a city called Bransk, in Grodno. There was born my father, Szachne Ziserman in 1923. My grandparents and he emmigrated some years later to Argentina, from where I am sending this mail.As I did not have the opportunity of talking with my father or grandparents (all died when I was 2 months old) I know very little of their history. If someone could help me in finding the exact place of his birth, it would be great! Thanks to all, and apologies for my english. Fabio Zyserman MODERATOR: ---------- Please remember to sign you messages with name AND city and State (or Country) It is required by all the lists on JewishGen. Thank you in anticipation!

Lebanon cemetery - Peabody, Mass

Janet Brown
Is there anyone in the Boston or Peabody area that could possibly take a
picture of a headstone for me. I have a Polaroid picture that has turned colors and is almost unreadable. The obituary says Lebanon Cemetery but my mother remembers it being called Workmens Cemetery. I will provide details privately. Janet Brown Jacksonville, Fla

Solutions to poor penmanship problems
#general
John Hoenig
Frequently, people ask for help dealing with poor penmanship. I published
an article entitled "15 Techniques to Triumph Over Poor Penmanship" in Family Chronicle (March-April 2003 pages 28-30) which I think readers may find helpful. Luckily, Family Chronicle consented to letting me put a downloadable pdf file on my website. If you'd like a free copy of the article, go to http://www.fisheries.vims.edu/hoenig/professor.html . There are several other articles on genealogical technique you might find of interest. John Hoenig Williamsburg, VA

Could anyone give me any information about my grandfather's family in Russia?
His name was M.BREGOVSKY. He was born in Kovno, Lithuania, became a pharmacist, and emigrated to the U.S. in 1883. Are there any relatives left in Russia with the name BREGOVSKY? Thanks, Matthew Bregoff, E-Mail address: mbregoff@concentric.net MODERATOR'S NOTE: The JewishGen Family Finder lists a number of researchers working on various spellings of BREGOVSKY, one of them is working on the exact spelling >from Lithuania. Go to < http://www.jewishgen.org/jgff/ >, click "Search," and choose alternativley the D-M Soundex search type or the standard search type. VM 3663-4: Need Russian Translation help - 2 Suwalki Birth Certificates from 1878
#general
Robert Zavos <rzavos@...>
I need some help on two birth certificates >from the LDS archive tapes for
Suwalki, 1878. These may be relatives if the names are ZAWONIK. The signatures (?) at the bottom seem to have more letters than in the document body (3663: last word on 4th line). The JRI-Poland indexer wrote 'Zaw-nik' as they could not be sure of the exact name. http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=3663 http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=3664 My family used 'ZAWOZNIK' in Yiddish and it became ZAVOSNICK in the USA and SAVOSNIVK in Norway & Sweden. They defintely lived in Raczki at least >from 1864. Some even survived there until 1939 and used the same spelling. If these are defintely not ZAVOSNICK then don't bother, but let me know who they are. Otherwise I am looking for the primary genealogical inormation - actual name, date of birth, parents, witnesses, village name. etc. Also why are there two certificates >from 1878 for two children wiht the same name - were they twins? I can alter or enlarge the digital photo a little if that will help, but the LDS tape was not real clear. Any other suggestions are welcome and thank you. Please respond privately to my email address on the pictures. Thank you Robert Zavos Pittsburgh PA- USA
