Yedintsy Moldova Discussion Group Update - Feb. 2004 #romania

ESIGmail@...

Dear Yedintsy / Yedinitz / Edinet , Bessarabia Parties:

Happy Belated New Year! It's been a while since I sent out any updates to you all. So let me inform you what's been going on:

(1) Yizkor Book

In the past year, two new sections have been submitted to JewishGen (hereinafter "JG") for posting. Section 5 (mostly full article translations), the Holocaust has been submitted and already posted onto the site. The translation of this section was funded by and donated by Eric Cohen of Massachusetts. Section 4 (mostly picture captions and introductory article paragrpahs), Idealogical Yedinits, has been formatted and submitted for posting to JewishGen.

http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Yedintsy/Yedinits.html

The articles regarding what happened to Yedinitzers during the Holocaust are a must read to fully appreciate what occurred even if your families emigrated prior to WWII.

I will hopefully have the Necrology Section (the book's own Yizkor section)fully formatted for submission within the next two months (working >from the excel sheets that many of you helped out by creating for this purpose).

We have funds available to fund new translations and expect to start tackling part of the Israel section. Starting in the Spring, Ed Berkowitz >from Oklahoma will be taking on the role of Yizkor Book Coordinator for our project .

Donations to this project can be made through:

http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/YizkorTrans.html

(2) Yedintsy Website

The website (not a shtetlinks website) has changed addresses and is in the process of being overhauled as to its look and the design of the site. I ask that you check it out, make
suggestions, and tell me what works and what doesn't. Content has also been added ranging >from New York City Landsmanschaftn documents to a Travel Journal regarding a trip to Yedintsy. Existing content is being re-formatted away >from PDFs where possible to full view web pages.

Requests are also being made of anyone that has content that would be of interest to the wider group that related to either Yedinitz émigre's (here in the US, South America and in Israel), what life was like in Yedinitz or various
other topics. If you have worthwhile research links etc please let me know what they are. This page has been ignored too long by me and will be a focus in the next several weeks.

The new address for the site is http://www.YEDINTSY.homestead.com

Remember to check the website's new Guest Book and link to the former site's Guest Book as many of you have left information regarding your own Yedinitz connections that others may have responded to.

Do you maintain a family website or a memorial page to your Yedinitz ancestor? If you do, I am thinking about creating a Gallery page where a picture would be posted of that individual linking the Yedintsy website to your page. If
interested please let me know.

Please note that this website is not an officially recognized shtel site by JewisgGen and does not claim to be part of the JG Shtetlinks family of sites maintained by JG.

(3) JewishGen Yedintsy Bessarabia Cemetery Project

JewishGen has informed me that they are very very behind in translating all the cemetery photo images taken >from the various cemeteries visited. We fully funded the project based on donations raised within this group. Thank you to
each of you that contributed. This project is part of JG's OnLine Worldwide Bural Registry project and can be accessed via :

http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/cemetery/

Anyone interested in helping this project out
by participating in the actual translation work should contact the new JewishGen project coodinator Nolan Altman at nta@pipeline.com. As previously reported there were photographs taken of approximately 480 headstones >from the
cemetery in present day Edinet, Moldova.

Funds for this project were solicited by JG (and pushed by me) by by the below listed site address. I have requested JG to note on this page that our project has ben fully funded and that now the project is awaiting staff / volunteer availability. Otherwise I have not found where on the site is any record that the Yedintsy photos were taken and awaiting translation. If anyone has found where any updates are listed on JG please let me know.

http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/Research.html

(4) NYC Yedinitz Cemeteries

In the early Spring before the weeds etc begin to fully grow back I plan on visiting the Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn to fully phtograph each of the stones in Section 2. I already have pictures of the stones in Section 5 and and
from Mt Hebron. If interested in joining me in that field trip please let me know.
Pictures >from previous trips to both Brooklyn's Washington Section 5 and Mt Hebron are available if you contact me directly based upon the stones listing on the Yedintsy website's cemetery pages.

(5) Visiting Israel and Yad Vashem in Particular?

Based on e-mail correspondence with Yad Vashem I have learned that there are 1500 Pages of Testimony >from Holocaust survivors >from Yedinitz. The Pages are listed as >from Edineti, the shtetls current name. UPDATE: We now think that much of this info was NOT put into the Yizkor Book. The Pages can be viewed at either Yad Vashem's Hall of Names or at the Library scanned on computers. Take this
opportunity to read directly >from the witnesses themselves without edits etc.

http://www.yadvashem.org.il

If anyone visits Yad Vashem complex please print out a few pages and send copies to me so that I can post them onto the Yedintsy website. I am not allowed to post translated articles >from the actual Yizkor Book on the Yedintsy
website if they donated to JewishGen as they are considered property of JewishGen once donated.

(6) JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF)

http://www.jewishgen.org/jgff/jgffweb.htm

As always as a service to yourself and other researchers remember to update your contact info on the JGFF, especially that listed for your Yedintsy listings.

(7) Yedinitz Landsman Groups Outside NYC Area

If anyone lives outside the NYC area in the United States, Canada or in South America, Europe or Israel that knows of the existence (most likley defunct) of a burial socity or other landsman group that was connected to Yedinitz
please us know. It apears right now the biggest communities of Yedinitz émigré's were in NYC, Brazil and Israel. If others are known or you have info that would be interest regarding Brazil or Israel please let us know as I want to
expand pages on the website to other communities of Yedinitzers.

Wrap Up

I wish you all well and ask that if any of you have info you wish to share with the group please let me know.

Dear Carol,

Your message on the Litvak SIG Digest was both
timely and appreciated. Some may not agree with
the decisions, or your explanation, but at least
the topics are out there in an open forum. As
long as personal attacks are not involved, an
open discussion on any subject involving the Litvak
SIG has to be a healthy thing in my opinion. None
of us are perfect and ideas or suggestions from
others can be a positive thing.
