Osiek Project at Sandomierz Archives - vital records have been indexed!
#poland
Orit Lavi <orit@...>
Dear Fellow Researchers,
The Jewish Records Indexing - Poland project is happy to announce that the indices to all the Jewish vital records of Osiek have been indexed by the JRI-Poland team in Warsaw as part of the Sandomierz Polish State Archives (PSA) Project. There are no LDS films for this town, so this project covers all available records >from Osiek. Registration in Osiek started only in 1888, and prior to that, Osiek Jews were registered in nearby towns, primarily Staszow. Osiek is located at latitude 50 31', longitude 21 27', 13 miles (20 km) E of Staszow, 9 miles (15 km) NE of Polaniec, 11 miles (18 km ) south of Klimontow, in the Sandomierz area, Radom gubernia. Jews first settled in Osiek in the early years of the 19th century. In 1857 the number of Jews in Osiek totalled 154, and it grew to 539 in 1921. In October 1942 Osiek's ghetto was liquidized and the Jews were sent to Treblinka. If you have relatives coming >from Osiek or >from the neighbouring towns such as Staszow, Koprzywnica, Klimontow, Bogoria and Polaniec ('Plontch'), this is an exceptional opportunity to find out more on your family. SUMMARY OF OSIEK RECORDS BEING INDEXED There are nearly 500 records being indexed as part of this project, covering 14 years between 1888 and 1902, as follows: Birth - 309, Grooms: 72, Brides: 72, Deaths: 114. SURNAMES FOUND IN THE NEW INDICES These are the most common surnames found in the Osiek indices: GROSCHAUZ RAICHMAN GOLDCHAR ZILBERBERG RAJFER CITRYN CYTRIN SZTERKMAN SZTRAKMAN ROZNER KLAJNER KLAINER BRAUM SZWARCCHAR SZWARCCHAUR ERLICH CINAMON CYNAMON CHOFMAN OFMAN BARANEK A list of all surnames appearing in the Osiek indices is now online at: http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/psa/osiek_surn.htm If you would like to know the number of times any surname appears in the new indices or more about the Osiek project, please contact me at: orit@olavi.co.il o FUNDING THE OSIEK PSA PROJECT To make this happen, we must fund this effort! Eventually all of these records will be posted on the Internet on the JRI-Poland database (at http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl ), but they will not be publicly available until our town's project has been fully funded through contributions. The estimated project cost is 120 US dollars to cover the cost of the index pages and the data entry. A donation (tax-deductible in the U.S.) of any amount is greatly appreciated. All researchers who contribute a minimum of $ 40 are eligible to obtain an EXCEL spreadsheet with all indices in the Osiek project for their own personal research. Here's how to make a donation: Donations can now be accepted by check, VISA or MasterCard! Please earmark your donation for the "Osiek PSA project". Mail checks to: Jewish Records Indexing - Poland c/o Sheila Salo 5607 Greenleaf Rd Cheverly, MD 20785 USA Visa and MasterCard contributions may be phoned to Sheila at (301) 341-1261. Or print out the form at: http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/visa.htm by clicking on the VISA Card and fax or mail it to Sheila. The fax number is also (301) 341-1261. (8:00 AM to 8:00 PM Eastern time only, please). For selected countries, JRI-Poland is able to accept bank drafts in a donor=92s local currency. Please check the JRI-Poland contributions web page for the list of countries. If your country is not on the list, and you do not wish to pay by credit card, please contact JRI-Poland Treasurer, Sheila Salo, for further help. The web site address is: http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/contrib-non-us.htm Please write me if I can be of further help to you, and thank you for considering support of this great project. MANILEVICH 1906 Kiev Gubernia Duma Voters List

Hello,
I was very happy to have read the 1906 Kiev Gubernia Duma Voter's List where I read my paternal grandfather's name and discovered his father's name, also. However, what does remain a mystery is that grandfather's name appears twice on the List as: Yankel MANILEVICH Vasilkov, and Kopel MANILEVICH Vasilkov Does anyone know a reason why his name would be listed twice? In Yiddish, Kopel is the diminutive for Yaakov and Yankel also means Yaakov. Thanks for your help. Proper form of address & how to find towns and counties in the US
#general
hanna <hannakg@...>
A posting on 1/8, regarding proper form of addresses, leads me to repeat
the question I have been unsuccessful in posting Where to find US counties in which towns and cities are located. I have found a site for Massachusetts which lists the counties and all their towns (not alpha by town, unfortunately) but nothing comparable for any other state. Any suggestions? Actors' 1900 Arrival and Court Case
#yiddish
David Harris <dorsharris@...>
This is a follow-up to my earlier message about the arrival in New York of
nearly 20 Yiddish theater actors and actresses on September 14, 1900. It seems that the playwright Moses Horowitz, was the Director of the Windsor Theater as it prepared for its 1900-1901 season. In order to assemble a cast for the series of performances, Horowitz went to Europe to recruit a troupe of actors and actresses. At the same time, the Hebrew Actors' Protective Union, represented by the Yiddish actor Sezar Greenberg, went to the immigration's Barge office to stop Horowitz and the Windsor Theater >from bringing the new performers into the country, requesting they be deported. Greenberg alleged that the Windsor owners were paying for the ocean passage of the new troupe with funds that were intended for members of the Hebrew Actors' Union. The ship arrived on September 14 and the 15th of September New York Times carried an article that the commissioner was considering the case. The issue was ultimately resolved in favor of Horowitz and the Windsor Theater. An interesting sidelight to this issue was that Sezar Greenberg was a nominal son-in-law of Moses Horowitz. The actress, Charlotte Horowitz, was identified as the "adopted daughter" of Moses Horowitz. Whether or not there was an official adoption is unsure. More likely, it was a theatrical undertaking. Charlotte then married Sezar Greenberg, thereby pitting the "father" and "son-in-law" in the case against each other. David Harris Silver Spring, MD dorsharris@verizon.net
