Photographs of immigrants?
#general
Wendygriswold <wendygriswold@...>
Hi, all.
Someone please tell me if I'm hallucinating. I have a recollection of hearing that there is an archive somewhere (NY?) of photographs taken of arriving immigrants, as they got off the boat, so it would have some chronological order to it. I was not concerned about it at the time because I figured I'd never find the immigration information on my family, but guess what ... (thank you again, Steve Morse). Yes, I would recognize faces, but does such an archive exist? Many thanks and happy Chanukkah, Wendy Griswold Arlington Virginia Blitz, Pfeiffer - Zhurawno (near Lvov) Dwass/Davis - Ekaterinoslaw (Dniepropetstrovsk), Ukraine Einhorn, Wenzelberg - Galicia (Mlynczyska, Catowisce, Ochotnica, Palesnica, Nowy Sacz, Czarny Dunajec), Chicago, New Jersey Garfinkel - Witebsk, Belarus

Uzlany/Mt.Skrill/Skriloff Circle
#belarus
Deborah Fox <debfox@...>
I am researching Uzlany (Uzlian, Uzlyany, Yuslan) south of Minsk. I have
traced the FOX/FUCHS and SKRILOFF families there to the 1700's. Family stories claim that a SKRILOFF ancestor was a draft dodger >from another area and needed a new name. He named himself Skriloff, after Mount Skrill, which was nearby. I cannot find a Mount Skrill anywhere near Minsk, or in nearby Poland, Russia, etc. I am also looking for a group called the Skriloff Circle, members of that family who used to meet in NYC. I have heard that they still meet occasionally. Deborah Fox Brigantine, NJ

Play on names, Searching ?ICKLER, ?ICHLER, ?ISLER
#belarus
Rachelle <rlberliner@...>
This may be a longshot for the JACOBS family search for the original
surname. However, it also may bring some answers. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Please answer me privately. Since our English cousin was unsure of the original surname of our grandfather, I am curious whether or not Ellis Island or any departure port could have also been unsure of spelling. For example: Any letter preceding the "I" in ICKLER/ICHLER/or ISLER would have changed the name completely. I have searched both FTJP and JGFF, using the D-M soundex. An "A" or "E" would still make the same sound. However, any consonant (or 2 together, such as St, Sp, etc.) could drastically change the name. If family came >from Poland, Przasnysz, Posen, Prussia, or anywhere directly to the U.S. without first living in the UK for awhile, they would not have known to search their family in the U.S. with our JACOBS name and today, we would not know how to search for them. Since the family was Orthodox, I assume that New York and/or Baltimore would be their residence of choice. Thank you in advance for giving your time and thoughts to this. Sincerely, Rachelle Leaf Berliner Savannah, GA rlberliner@comcast.net Searching Joseph Judah & Golda Rachel (or Rachel Golda) JACOBS Family Connections: EICHLER/AYKLER/ISLER/EHRLICH/JACOBS/GOLDSTEIN >from Przasnysz, Poland/Russia to London, England to Baltimore, MD to Atlanta, GA. lbert <alic99@...>
Thanks to Jack R. Braverman for the interesting question.
I completely agree with Larry Gaom with geographical definition for Litvaks. In the mentioned context, I think, mind special character of Litvaks. Briefly, Litvaks are assiduous and moderate in display of the feelings. In that Litvaks differ, for example, >from the Ukrainian Jews. Albert Kaganovich, PhD of Hebrew University

Hamburg Database update success
#belarus
Schelly Dardashti <dardasht@...>
Thanks to Gary Mokotoff's heads-up in "Nu? What's New?" on the updated
Hamburg Emigration database, I tried again. A major success was scored. We've been looking for Samuel and Anna (ESTRIN) TALALAY of Mogilev, Belarus for at least five years. Nothing shows. We know they followed, about 1901-2, Samuel's two brothers to England, the brothers went on to America and disappeared. Anna was sick and they stayed in the UK for a year, then went to Berlin, she died, he remarried and they and their children went to pre-state Israel in 1933. We found Samuel's 1948 burial record in Israel, but with no father's name or any other clues. We know they are definitely TALALAY of Mogilev (only one family), but no way to plug them into a "real" spot on our chart. Last night, I checked Hamburg again, and using TAL with % wildcard, up popped TALOLOG Anna and Schmul. Now I've ordered the records, and we hope some additional clues may emerge. The happy results showed the couple as going to Leeds UK, a new one for us. I am wondering now, if there were ESTRIN relatives in Leeds; we have no indication of any TALALAY in Leeds. Any Leeds experts out there? And for those who also have interesting names: Variations on the name in the Hamburg database include TALELEL, TALLALEI, TALLALLE, TALLELSY, TOLALEY, TULEJA, TULLILA. I also looked under TOL%, TUL%, TIL%, TEL% to make sure I caught some of the more esoteric known variants of TALALAY. And my ggm Riwe, great-uncle Leib (here Leo) and gm Chaje also popped up on the Hamburg update, on their 1905 journey. Good luck. Schelly Talalay Dardashti Tel Aviv dardasht@barak-online.net

Nancy Slome <nancy.s@...>
I have hit some roadblocks (again) in the search for my great-grandfather, ?
SLOMOWITZ >from Russia, arriving in America about 1890 with his wife ?, and daughter Minnie. They settled in Trenton and later moved to Philadelphia. There is a Samuel Slomovich listed in the 1900 Trenton New Jersey City Directory that may be a match, as I heard ggf was had a store, later on... Great-grandfather's children were Nathan SLOME (my grandfather), Harry Slome, Robert Slome, and Minnie (Slome) LEVIN. I'm now looking for any information on Minnie (Slome) Levin, married to Herman Levin; their children -- Saul, Charlotte and Renee (Slome) GUNDERSHEIMER. Perhaps this side of the family (whom I've never met) may have some helpful info! Have tried the usual resources -- this site, NYC Archives for records, Trenton cemeteries, but without proper spelling, it's been quite difficult. Open to all suggestions. Please respond privately.
