Greetings Hadass,

If you receive any positive responses to your message please let me know.
Some years ago I was told by the eminent Canadian genealogist (I'm losing
my memory!) that there were *No Jewish records* for Garwolin due to
destruction during the war. I am still waiting for a single reference to
Garwolin in the JRI-PL group in the last few years; so far there has not
been any.

I have posted four photographs taken of my grandfather in Warsaw in 1927

My grandfather was Harris Silverstone originally Hirsch Chrzan born in
Makowa (now Makow Mazowiecki) who arrived in New York in 1888. His
wife was Esther Silberstein whose name he took in America. In 1927 he
went back to Poland to visit his town. Most of the other pictures are
of graves in the cemetery.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

SUCCESS STORY #general

Eileen Price <eileen.price@...>

Dear members.

I finally received the death certificate for the person I called, "My
illusive aunt Sarah." This could not have been possible without the help
of many members in Detroit. This search started over two years ago with a
message requesting help in finding the 8 mile cemetery in Detroit. The
many replies gave me names and phone numbers for cemeteries in Detroit.
After a munber of phone calls, letters and checking with relatives again
and again, I ended up calling the Hebrew Memorial Park. Elaine helped by
taking out the plot maps and looking for the names and plot numbers. This
was all in the Aaron Moshe cemetery. I was told by my cousin that there
were three plots, her mother, father and one for Sarah. It turned out
that Sarah was also the name of her mother-in-law. Back to square one.
Another call to my cousin, who said that the Sarah I wanted was over
three rows, next to her two sons. Another phone call to Elaine who took
out the plot maps again, and without complaining, looked in all four
directions >from the earlier look-up. She found Sarah and the two sons,
not all next to each other. She gave me the plot numbers, the name and
phone number for Herman Kiefer - Detroit Health Department. I actually
spoke to a real person, not an answering machine. I got all the
information I needed to request a death certificate, all for only
$17.00. I had originally sent a request and check to the Michigan State
Health Department, with no luck.
I don't think that anyone helping in Detroit could have found Sarah
without actually walking up and down the rows of the cemetery. One of
Sarah's older sons changed the family name >from Gershenzon to Samson, and
when he buried his mother, the name was recorded as SANSON, not even
SAMSON. Being new in this field of research, I suppose that this could
have done better and quicker, but the bottom line is that I now have the
certificate, with names of her parents, which are the names of my
father's grandparents. Now I can start in earnest on the BLECHER family.
Never give up. It just takes lots of time, patience and help.
And of course, a check will be in the mail, to help with all the good work
done by our group.

In response to Elizabeth Levy's request for assistance, last night I
attended a program by Dr. Wolgang Grams on German immigration. He is
holds a Phd in history with emphasis on immigration however his broad
background in literature, music and culture were quite apparent. Dr.
Grams has a company "Research & Travel, Dr. Grams" and his website is
www.routes.de. The email is routes@.... He has extensive
experience in arranging custom genealogical/historical trips that can
include hometowns, historic sites, archival research, cruises, ports
of embarkation and anything you would like to include. Tours vary in
length and include all ground transportation, hotel accommodations,
many meals, admission charges, etc. He has lead tours of Germans to
American and vice versa. In addition, he is engaging and his English
is impeccable. Having arranged domestic tours myself, I know how much
work goes into them so I would personally be hesitant to take on such
a huge task.

I have no financial interest in this company and am providing this
information solely as a service to the group.

Shapiro vs Spiro #general

Hi Jewishgenners.

A very interesting question was asked of me by a neighbou of mine. It
appears that he was born here in Israel to a father who had come here to
Israel originally >from Lithuania and a mother who had come to Israel from
Greece.

His name is Spiro Shcapiro.. He claims that his firt name is derived from
the Gteek name Spiridion, but he does not know rhe derivation of his
surname. He was wandering whether the fairly common Ashkenazi surname of
Shapiro (and its variations) could have somehow been derived >from the
Greek name Spiridion.

Can any of you out there help me inn this matter?

Chaim Charutz.
