In response to Elizabeth Levy's request for assistance, last night I
attended a program by Dr. Wolgang Grams on German immigration. He is
holds a Phd in history with emphasis on immigration however his broad
background in literature, music and culture were quite apparent. Dr.
Grams has a company "Research & Travel, Dr. Grams" and his website is
www.routes.de. The email is routes@.... He has extensive
experience in arranging custom genealogical/historical trips that can
include hometowns, historic sites, archival research, cruises, ports
of embarkation and anything you would like to include. Tours vary in
length and include all ground transportation, hotel accommodations,
many meals, admission charges, etc. He has lead tours of Germans to
American and vice versa. In addition, he is engaging and his English
is impeccable. Having arranged domestic tours myself, I know how much
work goes into them so I would personally be hesitant to take on such
a huge task.

I have no financial interest in this company and am providing this
information solely as a service to the group.

Shapiro vs Spiro #general

Charutz <yairharu@...>

Hi Jewishgenners.

A very interesting question was asked of me by a neighbou of mine. It
appears that he was born here in Israel to a father who had come here to
Israel originally >from Lithuania and a mother who had come to Israel from
Greece.

His name is Spiro Shcapiro.. He claims that his firt name is derived from
the Gteek name Spiridion, but he does not know rhe derivation of his
surname. He was wandering whether the fairly common Ashkenazi surname of
Shapiro (and its variations) could have somehow been derived >from the
Greek name Spiridion.

Can any of you out there help me inn this matter?

Chaim Charutz.

We Remember Poniatowa, Poland! #general

Ada Holtzman <ada01@...>

No monument stands over Poniatowa...

This famous verse >from Yevgeni Yevtushenko poem on Babi Yar fits what is
in Poniatowa, Poland...

Exactly 60 years ago... On November 4, 1943, the Germans began
destroying Poniatowa Forced Labour Camp: some 15000 Jews were shot to
death in a one-day massacre as part of operation "ERNTEFEST". Prisoners
who resisted were burnt alive inside their barracks. Only a few
survivors escaped the camp before it was totally liquidated.

Poniatowa was the Forced Labour Camp with the last prisoners of Ghetto
Warsaw and Ghetto Opole.

I made a modest web site to commemorate Poniatowa:
http://www.zchor.org/poniatowa/poniatowa.htm

The most important resource is the testimony of Ludwika Fiszer at:

JRI-Poland Order Processing System: "thank yous" #general

Stanley Diamond

As readers of this list know, the Jewish Records Indexing - Poland "Order
Processing System" is now "live." After a year of testing and planning,
it is now possible to use the online shopping basket to order records
from nineteen branches of the Polish State Archives. And, I am pleased
to say, many of you have been doing just that in the very short time
since the system become operational.

While all of us associated with JRI-Poland have a great sense of joy and
achievement in reaching this milestone, I do not want to miss this
opportunity to express a hearty yasher koach to the those individuals who
worked so hard to make this all happen.

To Michael Tobias for simply being Michael. His shopping basket idea,
the testing and implimentation of the plan and the dedication that has
characterized his role in bringing the Order Processing System to life,
are a true reflection of the remarkable talents that he has brought to
JRI-Poland at every step in its history. Michael, we all thank you.

To Mark Halpern, the Director of the PSA Order Processing Center System,
who has carefully nurtured the idea since it was born, worked out the
details of the system, appointed anddirected the efforts of those
involved with the day to day operations of the system, created much of
the paperwork and communicated with our representative in Poland and the
Polish State Archives during the many months of the testing of the
system. Mark, thank you on behalf of every researcher who will be
utilizing this system for years to come.

To Executive Director Andrzej Biernat of the Polish State Archives, whose
vision and good will have been instrumental in so much of the success of
the JRI-Poland indexing initiative, and now, the introduction of PSA
Order Processing System.

We are trully blessed to have this partnership with the PSA and to have
been able to build on small beginnings and reach this important moment.

Finally, I would like to express our appreciation to the members of the
board who, in one way or another, have played such an important role in
defining policies, contributing ideas and provided technical expertise of
one type or another. This has truly been a team effort.

We wish all researchers much success in the weeks, months, and years
ahead. Your personal research experiences and achievements will be the
best testament to JRI-Poland, our database and our new Order Processing
System.
