Re: Addressing a letter to Polsnd. #general

Brian Stern <brians99@...>

I was given the address below >from the Central address bureau in Poland.
How would I correctly structure the information when addressing a letter
to Poland?

58-573 PIECHOWICE
Ul. KOPERNIKA 9
woj. dolnoslaskie.
Addresses in Europe are essentially the same as in the US. The postman
reads them >from the bottom to the top until it gets to its destination.
Country at the very bottom, then city above that, then street, house number
and at the very top the name of the person or organization the letter is
addressed to.

In Polish Ul. stands for "street" so your middle line is "Kopernika street
house number 9." Piechowice is a town, so it goes below the street number.
The numbers 58-573 are a postal code. They have postal codes in Europe
like US Mail Zip codes. Google says that "woj. dolnoslaskie " is the name
of a province or powiat in Poland. I don't think you need it in your
address. You didn't include the name of the person or organization you're
writing to though. So write on the outside of your envelope:

Person's name
Ul. Kopernika 9
58-573 Piechowice
POLAND

and send it air mail.

There are accent marks above the "s" and one below the "a" in the word
dolnoslaski. Do I need to include these accent marks in the address?
Forget about that. They'll be able to understand it without the accent marks.

Annotation on Passenger Manifest #general

Arnold Sarasky <asarasky@...>

I have the passenger manifest for the S.S. Majestic which arrived in New
York on June 24, 1924 >from Cherbourg, France. In the column regarding
the date and place of birth for persons who are natives of the United
States or its possessions, there is a 6 digit number for each of 2 uncles
who were returning >from a trip abroad. The naturalization column
indicates that they were naturalized in January 1921 in New York. Can
anyone tell me what the 6 digit number in the native of the United States
column represents and whether the record to which this refers is available
and >from what source?

Jews in the Boer WAR- Isidor Hermann #southafrica

Saul Issroff <shaul@...>

I have a record of J.J. Hermann who may be the person you are looking for.
There is no other Hermann in the lists at my disposal, but there is an L.
Herman, and an I. herman, and a Kommandant Herman ( killed outside
Colesburg 1901).
Regiment: Unknown
Male, age 48
action: Leeukop
rank : Waarnemende Kol.
Decoration: none
Killed in action SA WAR.
Place of death: Leeukop ( Devon)
date of death 01-04-1902 ( Non-USA date format!)
Date buried is given as 1973!!
place buried: Bethal Memorial Garden
Previously buried: Vlakvarkfontein
Comments: originally >from Middelburg district. Bethal Memorial Coffin no. 18
Source: RCL RS-22; will 487

This originates >from National Monuments Council
War Graves division

He is not included in the list of around 203 'Boerejode' compiled by the
late Chief Rabbi Rabinowitz. (see Jewish Affairs Summer 1996, and article
in same issue by David Saks.

I believe David Saks has done furhter research and now has additional
information on Jews in the Boer war. He is editor of Jewish Affairs.
I can provide his e-mail address if you contact me privately.
