Re: Polska Organizacja Wojskowa #general

edward konig <konige@...>

My PWN Encyclopedia gives its full name as "Polskie Organizacje
Wojskowo-Niepodl'eglos'ciowe", where the trailing ' indicates a "crossed l'
(pronounced w) and an accented s (pronounced sh), and its dates as
1908-1914. It states that In 1914, most of its members, and those of almost
a dozen other independence/military groups, joined Pilsudski's Polish
Legions.

The other groups had names like "Riflemen's Association", "Association for
Fighting Action", etc., continuing a long Polish tradition of independence
and resistance movements that evolved over the 123 years of the Partitions,
and that served as a model for the Polish Resistance (AK - Home Army) under
the German Nazi occupation in WW II.

If you more details, let me know and I will respond privately, because they
won't be of much interest to non-specialists in Polish history.

Dear friends,

I have specific information on the burial of my ancestors in Dresden and
Chemnitz (Germany).
I would very much like to obtain photos of their tombs. Yet I cannot go
there myself in the near future.

Could any of you let me know, or advise me, how I could obtain the tombs'

A success story #general

Dear Fellow Geners

I wanted to share with you a success story. In the past I posted messages
searching for relatives and any information about my great great grandparents,
Leibish and Chuma HONIG.

I knew that they came >from Galicia around 1870 to the U.S. with their children.
I also knew they moved to Palestine, Turkey, leaving their children here,
around 1900.

We have a letter >from the U.S. State Department, 1918, (responding to a letter
from my great grandmother requesting assistance in determining the whereabouts
of Chuma, her mother. The letter stated she had passed away some 18 months
earlier.

I contacted the Chevra Kadisha (burial society) in Jerusalem asking where
someone may have been buried around WWI. A gentleman contacted me and with
further information actually located the records of my great great
grandparents, who are buried on the Mount of Olives. He plans to amke a
visdit to see the actual graves.

The story continues.... I contacted the Nationa Archives in Washington, hoping
to track the letter >from the State Department. Since the letter had a file
number, they said a file was created and should have more items... I was hoping
for the original letter >from my great grandmother requesting the search...

Yesterday, I received a small package >from the National Archives with copies of
the letter >from my great grandmother, and all the corresponndence between the
agencies of the U.S consulate in Egypt, and British Millitary...

Very Cool!!

Dear FrenchSIG members,

Our Webmaster has just added a new link to our web page:
www.jewishgen.org/french Choose France >from the column on the left,
and then scroll down to the last entry. It is a link to the Holocaust
Museum in Besancon, the first and possibly one of the best in France.
Among the many valuable documents it contains are voluminous files about
the women deported to Ravensbruck. The material was donated by Germaine
Tillon, who survived Ravensbruck, and gave very important documentation
concerning that camp.

Query Regarding Surname Change: Betterspinner ---> SPINNER #general

Barry Spinner <bspinner@...>

Through recent research, and with the assistance of a friendly town manager,
I have found birth records of three grand-uncles in Sambor, Galicia
(Ukraine).

http://data.jewishgen.org/wconnect/wc.dll?jg~jgsys~jripllat~BETTERSPINNER
~SD~LW~~~Y~~~~~~ALL~~

These confirm a Surname of BETTERSPINNER, rather than SPINNER. I find no
other Betterspinner indications in JewishGen.org databases, nor in 1929
Directory, etc.

1) Has anyone ever heard of this surname?
2) Does it imply German ancestry?
3) Any suggestions on how to proceed? I had been pursuing Spinner
information in Galician records (PRI, etc). Contacts in JGFF on "SPINNER"
show no connections specifically in Galicia.

In country of immigration (Canada), only 'Spinner' was ever used.

This name, BETTERSPINNER, seems utterly unique.
