Yiddish translations requested on ViewMate: TURETSKY/Pinsk, MEISEL/Romanovo/Slutsk

John Jones <quexi@...>
Hi,
I've posted five family photos with Yiddish inscriptions on ViewMate. These were >from my grandfather's album, and I can't identify some of the people. I'm hoping that someone can fully translate one or more of the inscriptions. The fifth one also has some Russian (?) words, and any translation of that would help too. The photos include members of the TURETSKY family >from Pinsk and the MEISEL and CANTOR families >from Romanovo/Slutsk. The photos were taken in Pinsk, New York, and possibly the Romanovo area. To see them, please go to http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=3210 http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=3211 http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=3212 http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=3213 http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=3214 or go to ViewMate and look for #3210-3214 at http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/index.asp I have more photos of these families if anyone is interested. Please send your replies directly to me, rather than to this whole e-mail list. Many thanks! --John Jones, Basking Ridge, New Jersey, USA quexi@yahoo.com

Re: the SS St. Louis
#general
Naidia Woolf <rnwoolf@...>
There was an interesting (and poignant) article in the Parade section of my
local (San Francisco) newspaper about the American ship SS St. Louis and its over 900 Europeans (mostlyJews) who a few short months before war was declared in Europe in September 1939, were fleeing the Nazis - and almost certain incarceration and death. On May 13, 1939, the ship attempted to land at a U.S. port (in Florida) but despite "urgent telegrams to every level of the U.S. government, including President Roosevelt," permission was never granted. Instead, Coast Guard boats "patrolled the waters to prevent anyone >from swimming to shore." On June 7, the St. Louis was forced to turn round and return to Europe. Today there are dedicated researchers at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. trying to determine the fate of the passengers on the ill-fated St. Louis. Of the 619 who were offered sanctuary by France, Holland and Belgium, about 260 ultimately were deported and killed. At least 460 of the more than 900 passengers, however, survived the Holocaust and were traced to the U.S. (a small comfort, but comfort nevertheless). The Museum's Survivors Registry is the name of the database which documents the fates of individual European Jews -- at present the Registry includes the names and biographical information of more than 185,000 survivors and their descendants. [Similar to the records and testimonials held by Yad Vashem in Israel: my comment.] For more information about the S.S. St. Louis, the reader is asked to visit www.parade.com on the Web, or - if able to help (by furnishing information about the passengers on the St. Louis), to contact Scott Miller at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum - e-mail smiller@ushmm.org; www I have no financial interest in the above newspaper, nor in the Holocaust Memorial Museum or its Survivors Registry. This message has been posted simply because of what I believe is the "need to know." Naidia Woolf San Francisco, CA

I have received contradictory information about whether all of the records available for research about my family in Bessarabia are available online or whether additional records (birth, death, marriage, businesses, etc.) are available at the archives in Chisinau.
It is important for me to know this in order to decide whether to hire a researcher in Moldova or simply to search the online archives myself. Would anyone with expert knowledge in this area please respond. Alice Kaderlan Seattle

How I finally found grandpa on the ship manifest
#general
Roni S. Liebowitz
My very first post to the JewishGen listserv was soon after I got bitten by
the genealogy bug in 1997. I had managed to get a copy of my gp's (Morris SEIBEL's) naturalization papers which stated his date of arrival in New York (March 19, 1906), and the name of the ship (Giulia). I thought it would be a no-brainer to find his manifest. According to Morton-Allen Directory, the ship did indeed arrive in NY on the date he stated. I spent many hours at NARA looking at that manifest, but no gp. Every time I went to the archives, I checked the manifest again, thinking he would magically appear. When I was in Washington a year later, a volunteer at NARA took the microfilm >from me and claimed he would find gp. Didn't happen. So how did I finally find him? Once the Ellis Island database was on-line, I continued my quest >from the comfort of my home. Using Stephen Morse's search tools, I manipulated the searches in every possible way. Months passed. Finally, frustrated, I put only "S" in the surname space and "M" in the given name. I listed only 1906, male, and limited the age range. Still, a very long list of men appeared. I decided to look at the manifests for ALL the Morris, Moses, Max and Moische given names. I scrolled through several manifests and paid closer attention to March, the month he claimed he arrived. Then I came across the index for Moses SCHARFF. Why even bother to look? I was desperate. When I saw the actual manifest, I noticed the name SCHARFF looked more like SCHAFIR. That was gp's mother's maiden name!!! Although many family members lived in Galicia, grandpa was >from the Klimontow area, in nearby Poland. I remembered Mark Halpern explained that many children in Galicia took their mothers' surnames since only civil marriages (not religious ones) were recognized by the state. Could this really be my gp---at last!? The person who indexed the manifest listed "Runari" as his place of residence. Comparing the scribe's handwriting of the letters "K" and "R", I realized this actually said "Konary," a nearby town where gp's late mother's sister lived. Then I scrolled across the page and saw that he was going to his father (drum roll) Mendel SEIBEL at 218 Delancey Street in New York! *Bingo*! How many times had I looked at the manifest on the microfilm readers and passed by the listing for "Moses SCHARFF," never scrolling to the right and discovering this is really gp Morris SEIBEL! I know I wasn't alone in my search for a lost gp. I hope this helps some of you find your ancestors too. Good luck. There are memorial books, "Kniga Pamiati" that list Red Army Soldiers
from all over the Soviet Union, who were killed in WWII. These booksusually list the "Soviet Nationality" of the soldier. Russian, Ukrainian, Jewish, Greek, Bulgarian, Armenian, Georgian, and so on. Even German. These books were printed by governments. Go to a library search engine and type in Kniga Pamiati to find the memorial books for the Dnepropetrovsk region. Also there is a recently published Kniga Pamiati that lists civilians >from the city of Dnepropetrovsk who were killed in WWII. There is also a three volume set of Kniga Pamiati, with more volumes to come, of Jewish Red Army KIAs. This book also lists at least some people who were killed by the Germans in ghettos. This Jewish Kniga Pamiati was published by the Jewish War Veterans Association in Moscow. Once you locate one of these books you have to find a library who will lend it via interlibrary loan. This is no problem in the US and Canada. I don't know about elsewhere. Mel Comisarow

It is worth remembering that some of the German
