FYI,

Here's a charming website entitled "750 Hungarian Proverbs" for anyone
whose grandmother was fond of dispensing wisdom in the form of folk
sayings:

<http://mek.oszk.hu/00200/00242/00242.htm>;

The proverbs come with English translation.

You can contact the Hungarian Consulate at www.huembwas.org/Consular/OKMBESZ.htm for post-1895 records. You can only obtain records for deaths more than 30 years go, marriages over 60 and births over 90.

1848 Census #hungary

Robert Neu

One never stops learning and asking.

In the course of the transcription of the 1848 Census for Miskolc we
have run into two words that I cannot place or translate for sure:

1. "Marges" as a title just before the name.

2."Kussenland". As the country of birth. Could it be anything else than
a variation of "Russland = Russia" ? Yes, scripted capital R and K
look fairly alike.

Thanks

Zgierz, Poland #poland

Roni S. Liebowitz

Dear Researchers,

Zgierz is 7.2 miles NNW of Lodz. For those of you who are researching this
town, I think you'll be interested in this contact in Poland. The director
of the Museum there is willing and eager to provide information and share
historical documents about the Jews in this town. His contact information is Marcin (Martin) Czaplicki at marcin.czaplicki@polkomtel.com.pl I heard >from Marcin once before when he noticed a few errors about the identity of some picture postcards listed on the LARG site. He seems very eager to gather and share information for his town of Zgierz and help create a ShtetLinks site.

I was working for a long while with the director of the Belchatow
Museum--until his sudden and untimely death at 54 years of age. He was happy to research the history of the Jews in Belchatow and thrilled that the information was put on the ShtetLinks site. He provided me with old
photographs, articles, Jewish election and synagogue lists, etc. I hope you
can have the same enriching experience by working with Marcin.

Let me know. I would hate to miss this opportunity to gain information about the town.

Regards,
Roni
