New Material on Sokoly and Lomza--Bialystok Region #poland

Avigdor&Laia <lbendov@...>

Just to call your attention to the fact that more translated material has
been added to the Sokoly website. Although just introductory, it may have interest for you.

Just type Sokoly in your browser and go to the JewishGen Yizkor Book pages.
A section regarding the German-Polish "actions" is in the works and should
be coming up soon.

Those interested in more details, please contact me.

Re: How would the occupation of a Widow. #poland

Sally M. Bruckheimer <sallybru@...>

<< How would the occupation of an unemployed widow be listed>>

I have often seen entries in directories for Mrs Whoever, widow, 123
Anystreet, Anytown. Similar entries are in civil birth, marriage, and death records as well, although I have seen Polish/Russian records which sound like the parents of the groom (for example) are alive, when I know they are already dead.

MODERATOR'S NOTE: The original query dealt with an 1833 death certificate for an unemployed widow.

Polish-Hebrew towns and cities #poland

Avigdor&Laia <lbendov@...>

What is a standard (UNABRIDGED) authoritative index to Polish towns and
cities and Hebrew equivalents available on the Internet?
Perhaps naive, but wouldn't this be a time saver for translators of Yizkor
books and in general a help for genealogists?

If I have a Hebrew name, how do I know that I am transliterating it into the correct English (or Polish) name?

Aside >from the dozens of towns with the same name, context clues >from texts
are not always accurate.

Robyn Ziebert <rziebert@...>

Hi,

My ZYBERT family (g-gf Abram Zybert)lived at Sliska 41. It's a small
street sandwiched between Panska & Sienna, which seems to have been at
the southern border of the Ghetto; the children's hospital where Janus
Korzsak worked was also on the street. I found a photo of the hospital,
and wonder if anyone out there has other photos or knowledge of Sliska,
or what is there today?

Many Thanks,
Robyn (Ziebert)

GOGISH #general

Alan Steinfeld <poohtoes@...>

Helping a friend who is just getting started. The
GOGISH family dates to the late 1800's in Moscow
and may have come there >from the Ukraine.

Lev GOGISH had 2 sons and 2 daughters born in the 1890's.
They all remained in Russia with one grandson
eventually coming to the U.S. One of the daughters
married a man named MOLCHANOV while another may have
married a man named MUKCHAR.

Any connections with other families will be appreciated.
