Re: Lying about age?

Depending on the time frame, there was a VERY good reason for passing
oneself off as 17 on the manifest. If one arrived in the US being under theage of 18, one did not have to file "first papers", i.e., Declaration of Intent to Seek Naturalization. Just wait the requisite period (which varied >from time to time), then file for naturalization. Saved court and lawyer fees, saved time, etc. My GGF arrived in 1875, 1880 or 1881 (depending on which sworn document you believe); his naturalization says it was 1875, a few weeks before his 18th birthday. But I can't find any documentation to prove it. I bet great-grandpa told a fib so he could be naturalized more easily and quickly! Yaner (Alec) SILVERMAN

My family tree has doubled in the last few months -
but we are still missing one branch of our known tree. My grandmother, Esther Silverman Forman - daughter of Pearl Yankelvich Silverman - had a brother "Yaner" (Alec, in English) who settled in the New York area. Most of the family settled in the Boston area, arriving around 1910 >from Ovruch, in the Zhitomir Region of the Ukraine; although, I have heard that the Yankelvich family had family in the Odessa area. There was another branch of the Silverman family that settled in Chicago, but I'm not sure of the relationship. Hi,
Our Epstein tree has tripled in the last several months - but we are still looking for the descendants or any information of my great-grandfather, Morris (Salomon Mashe) Epstein's brother Isaac Epstein. They were the sons of Avraham Eliezer (Ha Levi) Epstein and his 1st wife, who had died when they were young. Other siblings were Sarah Epstein Fishkowitz, Friede Epstein, and Bertha Epstein Alpert. Avraham Eliezer Epstein's 2nd wife was Rachel Leah; and he had 2 children with her - Max Epstein and Rose Epstein Briskin. I'm now in touch with descendants of Max Epstein (Max's grandson is the contact on the Ha Levi Epstein page) and Sarah Epstein Fishkowitz - but nobody knows what happened to Isaac Epstein. thanks, Phyllis Forman http://fill4man.tripod.com/thehaleviepsteinfamilyfromzhetldyatlovo/ http://fill4man.tripod.com/evelyn/ http://fill4man.tripod.com/epstein/ http://fill4man.tripod.com/ MODERATOR NOTE: Please respond privately

Need advice in getting petitions for naturalization (USA)
#general
Yeruchem & Fraida Cohen
I know this has been asked before, but could someone
please tell me what they think is the best way in my personal situation to get my hands on the original petition for naturalization for my husband's grandparents? I'm quite confused about figuring out the quickest and least expensive way of obtaining those documents. And if I could go in person to that place, which do you think might be the best one to go to? We have their naturalization papers (1924 and 1931) in our possession and on his gm's certificate is even listed the petition number. Both naturalization certificates say on the top : The United States of America and on the bottom Department of Labor. Both naturalizations occurred in the city of Plattsburgh, in Clinton County, in NY State. So, do I get the petition >from NARA, from the Clinton County Court, >from NY State SupremeCourt? What does the Dept of Labor have to do with it? I'd love to hear what you genners think is the best way to proceed and what experiences you have had that have brought you success. Thanks for your help, Fraida Cohen
