Leaving Galicia #galicia

Richard Cooper <ric@...>

Although my maternal MILLET ancestors came >from Dabrowa Tarnowska
in West Galicia rather than Lvov in East Galicia, I may be able to shed some
light
on Leslie Montroll's query. My great-grandparents appear in London in 1888,
moving to Dublin in 1890, Bristol in 1891 and Southampton in 1899 where
they settled and prospered. However four of my great-grandfather's younger
siblings are on the Hamburg passenger lists as coming to London in 1899.
They next appear on the 1901 Census in Southampton with the rest of the
family.
So it may well be that Leslie's ancestors travelled overland to Hamburg -
they would not have needed to leave the German-speaking familiarity of the
Austro-Hungarian and German Empires - and thence went to London.
from there it was a short train journey to Southampton whence, like hundreds
of thousands of others, they continued their onward journey to America.
For further reading, see 'Shores of Refuge' by Ronald Sanders.

Finding a NY congregation and Ketuba #general

Mjn519@...

How does one find the list of congregations in NY during 1889?I have my
great great grandparent's marriage certificate which listed a Congregation
Anshe Shakee (spelling??) on 18 Allen St. Would like to find the correct
name of this congregation.

Second question: How do I go about getting the ketuba >from this
particular congregation, even tho I doubt it is still there today?

Debbie had a question relating to the location of Chator Eujhel. I believe
the actual name is Satoraljaujhely. I am going there in 2004 to do some
genealogical research of my own. It is located about 150 miles north of
Budapest. Her listed e-mail address apparently is no longer current. If
she has any more questions she can contact me.

PALTIEL in Italy #general

Nardo Bonomi

Dear Naomi and dear Group,

About genealogical researches in Italy:
I wrote an "How-to" file for the JewishGen and it will be soon on-line on
the webpage at www.jewishgen.org.
For the moment I can say as usual: to begin your research you have to keep
in mind Who, Where, and When.
You have a surname, you have to identify a town and a province. Then you
can find the addresses of the 1) townhall, 2) the archives, and 3) the
Jewish community.
Each of these institution have different archives with different records.
If you need punctual advices, please write me.

Legitinate or illegitimate child #general

lilian schorr <lilianschorr@...>

Dear Genners,
On the birth record of my aunt Serl Race MISCHEL dated 1894, the is a note
stating: "following instructions >from Stanislawow dated 7/3/1930, and the
recommendation of the office >from Stryj >from April 8, 1930, it is noted
that the child is of intramarital origin....."

My question is:
1) Why was this note written in 1930 on the Birth Record dated 1894?
2) Was it because my aunt needed to obtain the Passport and therefore
as my grandfather was dead by 1930 a civil marriage could not take place
and therefore she could not legitimate her birth?
Would appreciate any comments that would help me understand this.

Thank you in advance,

Lilian Schorr
