Re: Hungary versus Austria??

Robert Neu
Of the areas of Hungary that became Austria after World War I, the most
likely is what is referred to as the "Burgenland". However, to answer the question it is necessary to know the towns and records you are looking for. Robert Neu goldhammer <goldhammer@sbcglobal.net> wrote: I have a question concerning place of birth on different census years. In 1910 they listed Hungary, in 1920 Austria. Is this because of shifting country lines?? If so, what region should I be concentrating on locating information regarding this family? Not one document has listed a county or city for place of birth! This includes passenger records, applications for citizenship, Social Security applications, death records. Hello Dianne,
the area that was part of Hungary in 1910 and after the Trianon peacetreaty of 1920 Austria, is known as Burgenland, now Austria, formerly Hungary. It is approximately at the North-West corner of Hungary. At that time they wanted to annex to that area also the city of Sopron, but that effort was defeated. So Sopron is still Hungary. researching: SZAFRAN from Przasnysz
#poland
Marty Meyers <meyers01@...>
Jankiel (34) and Fayga (29) SZAFRAN came through ellis island
in 1922 with their children Srul (7), Necha Ryfka (5) and Dwora (3). Jankiel listed a brother Feiwel SZAFRAN back in Przasnsyz and said that they were going to Kalamazoo, Michigan. In my family tree, Necha Ryfka ALLENSZTEJN (b.1854) married Hersz SZAFRAN in 1873. I assume, >from the Necha Ryfka connection, that Jankiel was a son of Necha Ryfka and Hersz. If this sounds familiar, please contact me privately at <meyers01@comcast.net> Thanks, Marty Meyers

Frequency of Finding Age Discrepancies
#romania
Michelle Frager <lulu_brooks@...>
Dear List:
Recently different people have written about ages of ancestors that conflict among found records, or with family information. It's a given that ages were played around with for one reason or another, depending on the circumstances. Often, births weren't recorded with civil authorities for as many as several years because people didn't travel to the civic center, or didn't want a son's birth registered. There were other reasons as well. It is interesting that the Reviskii Staskii (sp?) have a twin-set of columns relating to age. Loosely translated: "Age by Documents/Records" and "Age by Appearance." Michelle Frager, NY area

Avi Feldblum <feldblum@...>
Hello all,
I've just recently joined the SIG. I would characterize myself as an amateur in this area, but have started to compile some of the family history. My grandfather was Rabbi Ephraim Eliezer YOLLES, his father was R, Shalom YOLLES who was a Chassidishe Rebbe located in Stree, and his father was R' Urie YOLLES, the Sambor Rebbe. If anyone on this SIG has information on the Yolles family, I would be interested in sharing. Avi Feldblum
