Re: looking for information on Resistance/LUSTIG Family Nancy,France #france

Don and Debby Painter <painter@...>

I want to thank all that have written me with regards to my
Grandparents (I did learn something new) and appreciate the time taken
by all, but I believe I didn't word my message properly. To correct
myself, I am looking for anyone who might have more information in
connection to their "resistance/rescue" work.

Secondly, we are aware that they were deported to Auschwitz on Convoy
#11. We have a record showing that my Grandfather (Benjamin Hirsch
Lustig) was "tatooed" on entry, but there is nothing on my Grandmother
Lea Elisabeth Lusting, nee Klinger after her arrival. The Red Cross is
looking, but more help couldn't hurt.

I apologize for the confusion and again thank you all,

Debby Gincig Painter

Is JewishGen known to computer-savvy former Soviet Jews? #ukraine

Michelle Frager <lulu_brooks@...>

Dear List:

While sitting at my computer and wishing there were List participants
from "the old country," it occurred to me to wonder if even those
Jews with computer access are aware of JewishGen, it's work and
personal volunteer nature.

Does anyone on the list know? Is it the sort of information the
humanitarian/communal/Jewish groups or Jewish publications over there
would disseminate?

Dear Genners,

In accordance with the current complete reconstruction of the Kisvarda
cemetery and the erection and rewriting of approximately 700 tombstones
there, (this is in addition to the beautiful, concrete fence built 2 years
ago by some descendants) we at the Heritage Foundation for Preservation of
Jewish Cemeteries (a.k.a. HFPJC) would appreciate any information regarding
the exzistence of any mass graves in the Kisvarda cemetery post WWII. Please
notify us at the following e-mail address:

Best wishes,

It would be fun to compile a list of the many USA cities and towns which
were named after English, European and Russian and even biblical ones and do
research about the groups of people who named them when they settled in the US.

Odessa, Texas, is a well-known example, Paris, Illinois is another I can
think of quickly. Here in Indiana, Carmel and Goshen are some of the biblical
place names.

But Rabbi Saydman had asked about the Nova Praha in the Ukraine so that is
the one I tried to help him with when I mentioned Novaya Praga in the Kirovograd
oblast, a town not far >from the Kirovograd city which he had also inquired
about.

Re: Bakshy #ukraine

Yekkey@...

Interesting, BAKSH(I) is a common name among Sfardim. In Turkish, it means
"garden." In some Indian languages it is a term used for officers of the ruler's
court especially financiers.

There were Turkish Jews in the Crimea. I wonder if Laura's grandmother's
family was of Sephardic origin. She might like to with a Sephardic or Turkish
Jewish genealogical list serve.

Did anybody in the family take the name BAUMGARTEN, GARTEN or PARDES? They
all mean "garden" or "orchard" in various languages.

Did anybody take the name WIRTSCHAFTER? That is German for ruler's financiers.

ROTHSCHILDs #germany

Aliaanor@...

I have recently determined that my ROTHSCHILD ancestors originated >from the
town of Hergenfeld in what is now Rhineland Pfalz. It is near Kaiserlautern
and Bad Kreuznach.

The town is extremely small. Only 500 residents there today. The mayor has
tried to find my great grandfather's birth record in the parish records, but
was unsuccessful. However, I know he was born there. Does anyone have any
suggestions for tracking down a Jewish birth record for a resident of this small
village who was born in 1845? Could it possibly be in the archives of a nearby
larger village or in a local archive? Thanks for any suggestions.

Lekurany or Sokiryany, Ukr or Secareni, Mol #romania

In the RomSig Digest of December 18, Alice Kaderlan is trying to identify a
place "Lekurany."
She refers to Corjeuti, Mol (which is alternatively listed in WOWW as
Korzhevtsy), at 48 deg 13 min lat/27 deg 03 min long.
I am familiar with Sokiryany, Ukraine, which is alternatively referred to as
Sekurian or Sekiryani, which is at 48 deg 27 min lat/27 deg 25 min long. This
place had a significant Jewish population.

A very much smaller place is Secareni, Moldova (alternatively referred to as
Sacareni or Sekareny). Its location is 47 deg 02 min lat/28 deg 20 min long.
