Dear Dr Marius Loeffler

Thank you very much for your email.
In answer to your question? I bought these 'Ghetto photos >from a
collector in Germany, like many on the Warszawa list I was hoping that
one of these fotos may include 28 Panska Street which is the last known
address of my grandparents, who were murdered sometime in 1942 in
Warszawa. I am hoping that other members, like yourself, may help
identify some of the streets so that I can add this information to each
foto - in this way they become more meaningful. I have many more fotos
which I have collected over time- of Ghetto life, Warszawa during WW2
and of Poland during this period - again these are mainly taken by Nazi
soldiers as 'tourist' images which have minimal desrcriptions ie.
Warschau 1939! no details as such which would put names to places, of
course there are landmark buildings in many of these fotos as one would
expect. So any help >from anyone to identify the subject matter is most
welcome.

I have posted a further set of 50+ new images on URL:

Greeting to all in the Warszawa Group!

I have placed a small collection of photographs taken mainly by Nazi
soldiers stationed in Warsaw during the war which I hope some will
find
interesting? I have tried a programme called 'Portfolio' to cerate
the web
album so am interested to see if it downloads okay? If it works
better than

Many relatives lived and died in the Warsaw Ghetto. I have been searching
for photographs for streets where they lived such as Ogrodowa and Solona
streets. Any suggestions as to where I can locate such photos?
What street numbers are you looking for? Ogrodowa (Garden) Street was
several blocks long and included about seventy apartment houses extending
between
Solna (not Solona ) Street and Plac Kercellego (Kercelli Square). On the
other hand, Solna was rather a short street with only twenty or so apartment
houses. Those two streets were situated in a "T" configuration with
Ogrodowa beginning in the middle of and at approximately number 10 of Solna
Street. I happen to have my own snapshot in front of 56 Ogrodowa Street
taken in 1942 or 1943. That part of Ogrodowa was at the other end, opposite
to Solna. On my photo you can not see much other than a 13 years old boy
kicking a ball, which was me.

Names #general

Brenda Jerome

I would value the opinion of more experienced JewishGenners on the subject
of family names.

I am researching my grandparents, who moved >from Riga, Latvia, to London,
England, in 1885. I had always understood that my grandfather's family
name was Kalman when they lived in Russia, later changed to Colman (and
then Coleman) when they moved to England. However, when I recently
visited the National Archives in Riga, Latvia, and obtained a copy of the
marriage entry for my grandparents, the name shown was actually Kiel. Now
I know that names are the most unreliable items of information and were
always very fluid and I realise that spelling means nothing, as names
were written in Hebrew and Cyrillic letters. However, it seems strange to
me that the 'man' part of the name would have disappeared altogether and
I'm just wondering if these are in fact my ancestors. My grandmother's
family name was Bahn and that is correct, but if an older sister of hers
had married a Kiel around the same time, the records would still fit the
situation.

I would welcome your views on the matter.

Many thanks.

I received a copy of this book >from the family of a deceased neighbor and
it is useless to me. I will give it to anyone who thinks it might benefit

The book is about 200 pages long, with most of it in Yiddish. The last 25
pages or so are an English synopsis of each section of the book. The book
has ads >from Vilna as well as photos. The information on the cover of the
book is as follows: Vilna Almanac, edited by A.I. Grodzenski, published in
1939 by "Ovnt Kurler", reprinted in 1992, newly edited by Isaac Kowalski.
There are 2 forewords written by Joseph Mlotek and Prof. Yonia Fain.

B'nai Israel Cemetery - Pittsburgh, PA #general

shelcohe@...

I am looking for CHARLSON ancestors who are said to be buried in the
B'nai Israel Cemetery, Pittsburgh. I have found listings for one on
Blackadore Ave. ext., Pittsburgh , but telephone number shown has been
disconnected.
Other cemeteries by that name are shown in Greensburgh, McKeesport,
Hempfield Twnsp and Penn Twnshp. Not being familiar with the city, cannot
tell whether any of these others could be considered to be in Greater
Pittsburgh area or not.

Looking for graves of:

Harry and Shirley CHARLSON
William and Mollie CHARLSON
Chester and Irma CHARLSON
Raymond and Helen CHARLSON
David and Gertrude CHARLSON

Any assistance in locating the actual cemetery and/or the specific graves
will be appreciated.

Shaktiel? or Shauliai? #lithuania

Meri-Jane Rochelson <rochelso@...>

On an audiotape my father made before he died, he named the town in
which his mother and brother lived, and where they were killed by
Lithuanian fascists in 1941. It sounds like Shaktiel (or Shakteel), and
I have listened to it many times. However, when I visited Lithuania
this past summer, I could find no place with such a name. Could this be
a pronunciation of Shauliai? Or does anyone have another suggestion?
I'm pretty sure it was a place not far >from Kovno (Kaunas).

Thanks for whatever help you can give me.

Best,
