It appears in the following context, in a passage describing Polish rule in the inter-war years: During the 1930s, the ruling party "Sanatsya" also started its corrupt policy, based on threats and oppression, in Kremenets. The government authorities started to intervene in the life of the Jewish community, supporting aggresive public workers of their choice and creating dissent among the Jewish population. All those who opposed this policy were doomed to persecution; loss of their livelihood, etc. With political oppression came economic oppression. The Jews collapsed under the weight of taxes, the sources of their livelihood were closed to them. The young men, forced to idleness, were in decline. Under the influence of the authorities an atmosphere of "Pashitik" penetrated our area. The life of a Jew, walking alone at night in a street far >from center of town, was not safe anymore; a worry that Kremenets' Jews did not have for many generations.

First names of German Jewish children in West Prussia
#germany
Joe Rich <joerich@...>
Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me with a question about traditional patterns of naming Jewish children. My family comes >from Krojanke, West Prussia, and all the records I have indicate that, prior to my father's birth in 1901, all my (known) ancestors, without exception, were given fairly traditional Jewish first names by their parents - Israel, Sara, Jacob,, Hanne, Hirsch, Rebecca, etc. Then suddenly my paternal grandparents called their seven children, born between 1901 and 1910, Martin, Ruth, Herbert, Siegfried, Eva, Ilona, and Arthur. Am I correct in my belief that most of these are not traditionally Jewish? If so, does it reflect an idiosyncratic failure to conform on my grandparents' part? Or is it part of a general trend among Jews in this region at this time to switch to a more secular nomenclature? Or am I making a false assumption in holding the view that in earlier times Jews in West Prussian villages typically gave their children biblical names? Or is it something else that I haven't tthought of? The surnames, incidentally, were REICH, MARGONINSKI, KLEIN, ROSENTHAL, BLUMBERG. Thank you in anticipation. Joe Rich Melbourne Australia

Hello Gersig
I have just joined, I have been doing my genealogy for around 2yrs. I live in London UK, native language English although I now understand enough Dutch and French to read certificates. I have got back to ggg grandfather having travelled through France, Belgium and Holland but am stuck at Germany. My primary goal is to find information on Salomon Jacob COHEN who married Mina SELICH (poss. SCHLICK). They had at least 2 children Lazarus (aka Salomon) b1792 Frankfurt and Jacob Salomon born Mar 1797 Frankfurt a Main. Jacob Salomon is my ggg grandfather. Jacob married Rachel Izaak LEVEI born 1800(?) Frankfurt a Main. Marriage date and place unknown. They had the following children Abraham b14/3/1822 Steindorf, Levie b2/5/1828 Germany, Mina bMay 1825 Neudamm, Zele b2/1/1830 Frankfurt, Aaltje b May 1834 Zutphen Holland, Martha b18/8/1836 Gorssel Holland, Salomon b8/2/1841 Zutphen, Eva b25/5/1843 Zutphen, Betje b18/6/1846 Zutphen. The family lived in Zutphen then moved to Brussels around 1860. I have contacted Frankfurt a Main archives who said they couldn't find anything, the Frankfurt Museum kindly gave my details to the section on Holocaust research - so can anyone suggest how I can find some information on my COHEN's >from Frankfurt. Grateful for all advice, thanks in advance Gaby Laws gabylaws@hotmail.com London UK.

Dear Ukraine SIG Members,
There's an opening for someone who'd like to join our friendly moderating team on our Digest. Moderating would require only an hour a day for 10 days during each month, & the enjoyment of working behind the scene to facilitate the questions & messages of fellow members. Those who would like to join our moderating team are invited to contact me (Florence Elman) at haflo@shaw.ca . I'll arrange for training & see that "all is made clear"! ;-) It's very easy once you're into the swing, & involves very little of your actual time. I look forward to moderating with you ... Her father, Meyer KAPLAN listed his residence and birthplace in EIDB in 1906 as Odessa, Russia. Meyer and Sarah were first cousins. Would anyone have any idea of what shtetl Risinan could be? >> I think that the most likely possibility is "Rusyani" ("Rusen" or "Ruseni") which is north west of Kishinev. Kishinev is not extremely far >from Odessa where Ms. Leo's great grandfather had lived. A more remote possibility is "Risanan" Ruzhany or Rozana. It is southeast of Bialystok (Belarus) and south of Volkovisk. There is a yiskor book for this town entitled "Ruzhinoi" published in 1957. Still another possibility is "Ruzin," or "Rusin," which is southwest of Kiev and southeast of Zhitomir.
