The Bielsk Podlaski ShtetLinks site has been updated with new materials.

Two more letters to President Hoover >from the children of Bielsk have
been added to the site. One is >from the children of Jewish Orphanage Number 4 in Bielsk. The other is >from the children of Kitchen no. 4, Siemiatycze, province Bielsk, Grodno Land. Each letter consists of hand-drawn artwork with a note to the President and a signature page.

Thanks again to Tomy Wisniewski for translating the letters and to Mindy Gross for translating the Yiddish signatures of the children. The letters were provided through the courtesy of the Herbert Hoover Subject Collection of the Hoover Institution Archives.

Also added is the complete 1928 40th Anniversary Banquet Souvenir
Journal of the Bielsker Bruderlicher Unterstitzungs Verein, which consists of 76 pages containing membership, officers and directors lists, photos of the organizers, ex-presidents, officers, and committee members, a history of the verein, poetry, advertisements >from members, memorials, and a few pages thatare either in Yiddish or Hebrew. On behalf of my mother - Mrs. Chaviva-Luba Rosenberg (nee Minz) and her
sister, Mrs. Bat-Sheva Porat (nee Minz) I am sending this call for
information:

We are looking for our brother Kalev Minz. He was vorn in Vilnius, 1915- to
Benjamin and Rachel-Gita Minz. In 1932 the family moved to Siaulai. In the
beginning of 1941, before the German took over Lithuania, our brother joined the Russian Army, and was sent with the 16 Division to the East. The rest of the family was sent to the camps.

After the war we met people who served with him during the war at the
"Lithuanian division no. 16", but they did not know where he is. We were
told that he was twice hospitalized in an army hospital in Moscow and was
sent back to his unit.

Few years ago we received a photograph of him, wearing the army uniform,
which was taken beofre the end of the war.

We know that many soldiers >from the 16 Division were lost in ORIOL. We
learned >from a TV program, on August 4, 1993, on the 50 anniversay of
freeing ORIOL by the Russian army, that there is a new museum in ORIOL -
P.T.P.

We had tried the Yad Vashem and other similar institutions but did not find
anything.

Any information will be of most important to us.

Dear colleagues

Recently whilst working on our STEINHAUER tree, and in the light of two
Pages of Testimony recently discovered at Yad Vashem, my cousins and I
have now virtually reached the conclusion that all the STEINHAUER (various
spellings) on the 1942 Vilna Ghetto list were definitely our relatives,
albeit >from two separate branches of the Steinhauer family.

Anyway, during my brainstorming on this research I looked again at
information I received some years ago >from Aleksandrs Feigmanis and the
also the entries in 1913 and 1915 editions of Vsia Vilna. Although I had a strong feeling that all the Steinhauers listed in Vsia Vilna, as well as
the 1942 Vilna Ghetto list, were definitely "ours", I have been trying to
justify this feeling.

Now all the pennies have dropped - with a big thank you to my fifth
Steinhauer cousin, Paul. We think we have found the links, although there
is still one name that has not been conclusively recognised.

As a result we have realised that two (not one as previously known) of the entries in the 1913 and 1915 Vsia Vilna directories are for businesses
which were registered in the wife's name, viz :

In 1913, the furniture business at Vilna, Millionnaya 3, was registered in
the name of my GGGM, Basheva Lapidus (nee Shteingauer). Her husband, my
GGGF, Aron ben Shlomo Lapidus died in 1914.

In 1913 and 1915 there were listings for :
Carpenter workshop of Mich. Ber. Shteingauer, Bolshaya Str. 74
Furniture trade of Shteingauer, Mich. Ber., Bolshaya Str. 74

I stupidly assumed that Mich. Ber Shteingauer was a man. But my cousin
Paul has just realised that the business was probably owned/run by
Jossel/Yosef/Iosel ben Lipman SHTEINGAUER (I.L. Shteingauer) whose wife's
name was Chjena-Michla bas Ber SNIPISHKIER SHTEINGAUER - thus we now
realise that the business was registered in the name of Michla bas Ber
SHTEINGAUER!!! Lipman SHTEINGAUER b.ca. 1850, was a younger brother of my
GGGM, Basheva SHTEINGAUER LAPIDUS. Probably the Lipman and/orLipa
Steinhauer listed on the 1942 Vilna Ghetto list and the associated Reise
labour camp list was/were one of the sons of Chjena-Michla and Jossel.

Chjena-Michla and Jossel SHTEINGAUER and their family were in the Vilna
Ghetto and we know that Chjena-Michla and Jossel probably perished in the
camp at Klooga, Estonia. We now know at least two of their sons (possibly
three) and one daughter-in-law somehow survived. Most of the other
Steinhauers in the Vilna Ghetto probably perished.

However, in the light of these two businesses both being listed in Vsia
Vilna in the names of the wives (I cannot see my GGGM, born ca.1841 - who
had 13 children) running a carpenter/furniture business in 1913 (I still do not know when she died, but it was after the death of her husband in July 1914),

I wonder if anyone has any thoughts about why businesses in Vilna
might have been registered in the wife's name, rather than the husband's? In our case, I very much doubt if it was because the husbands
were "scholars" and thus didn't "work". And I doubt that the women
concerned were carpenters!

Has anyone got any other possible explanations? Was this a common practice?

Second generation "converts" to Chritianity were relatively safe >from the
Gestapo/Nyilas thugs, but non-Jewish males, who were circumcised (a tiny
minority), were at risk.

I cannot claim to have personally known Kasztner, but you should all be
aware that the case against him was considerable and weighty (hence the
derisory libel award he gained in Israel, despite having at the time all
the weight of the government machine behind him - and such things do
matter in a court case!).

As far as I am concerned, his "fame" can be buried or disinterred but,
taken as whole, his actions cannot be exculpated.

A short selection of the good things he might have done as set out in Mr
Singer's posting misses out a whole slew of other actions which would put
his "fame" in a quite different light.
