Searching Relatives of Simcha Najer #poland

Ada Holtzman <ada01@...>

On behalf of a friend I send this searching message.
My friend searches relatives of Simcha NAJER >from Bialystok or any of
the surrounding shtetls (he always considered himself ">from Bialystok"). He was born on 15.12.1919 and his father's name was Moshe.
He immigrated to Eretz Israel on 1 April 1937 and lived in Ramat Gan.
He died alone without a family.
Any help or information will be highly appreciated.

Thank you,

Shalom,

Ada Holtzman

I am pleased to inform you that the Bialystok web site was updated for
the 52th time:
http://www.zchor.org/bialystok/bialystok.htm

In the chapter Holocaust, I added the message >from Daniel Moszkowicz
hy"d, one of the leaders of the underground and Ghetto Bialystok uprising. It is a testament!

I also added the testimony of Abraham Vered (WARAT in Bialystok) about
the liquidation of the ghetto, translated >from his book "Living in the Shadow of the Holocaust", translated by the courtesy of the Bialystok Landsmanschaft in Israel (The "Vaad").

Shalom,

Has anyone heard of this Benevolent Congregation?
Since there was [obviously] a dinner celebrating 25

Society.
Burial societies also have 25 year anniversary dinners.

I don't know about this particular society, but "Kranken Unterstitsings
Verein" (literally "Sick Support Association") would be an organization
that might have lots of other activities as well - most prominent of
which might be the provision of free medical care to its members in
the days before health insurance. At least, I know the Hebrew Sick
Benefit Association in Winnipeg used to do this, as well as operating
a cemetery (with free burial for members) and a synagogue.

I have found a very old sepia portrait photograph taken of my
grandmother in about 1918.

The company that took the photograph was called Rappoport's Studio.

Their address in New York City was 33 Second Avenue.

Does anyone know anything about this company.

The address 33 Second Avenue is near East Houston Street and Bowery.

Thank you for reading this message.

Tserke Tserkuvka Tserkovski and CZERECHOWSKIs #general

Daniel <vangheluwe-smietan@...>

Dear all

I am searching what mean the surname CZERECHOWSKI, wich appear as
CHERAKHOVSKI in the Revision List 1858 of Latviak. One family only had
this surname in 1958 for the entire Latviak, in the shtetl Rozhanka,
county of Lida. The surname stayed later in Orlja, wich is the nearby
shtetl, as CZERECHOWSKA, in 1929 Polish Business Directory for
Nowogrodek. (The county is polish in this time.) I know 4 emigrants
CZERECHOWSKI >from Rozhanka at end of XIX or beginning of XX, to Warsaw,
Paris London and New York.
The revision list said that Khonon and Leib CHERAKHOVSKI born circa 1839
and 1841 are son of Khaim born circa 1815, son himself of Zelman. I know
that the surnames for Jewish peoples appear circa 1816...
It seem to me that Khaim was just arrived in Rozhanka in 1858 or early,
1835-1840, because this name is rare in the shtetl to.
At comparable times, we have records on Jewishgen database of CZERCHOWSKIs
only in Malogoszcz/Kielce and Radoszyce/Radom/Kielce in Poland. Nothing
else in other country with searcheable databases.

Thus, could the surname CZERECHOWSKI mean son of... Tserke Tsherke, a
yiddish female givenname? or son of a male with a givename that I dont
know? In this case, would be Zelman CZERECHOWSKI son of this personage
according to the date of laws about surnames?

Or, could the surname CZERECHOWSKI mean >from the shtetl Tserkuvka,
Ukrainia ( 200km south >from Rozhanka) ? or >from the shtetl Tserkovski,
Cerkovski, Bulgarie? Or >from a other shtetl with a name that I dont
know? I dont know the moves of peoples in thoses times.

One of our Pikholz descendants here in Israel asked if I can help find
what happened to his father's sister and two brothers who went to the

The names he gave me were David, Tova and Abraham Zeingorodzki, from

I had a look at the Ellis Island database, using Steve Morse's magic
program, and indeed found David who entered the US in 1921, >from Lodz.
The manifest lists a friend as his closest contact in country of origin
and a brother Izidore Zwerig in the Bronx. I don't know if the name
Zwerig is in some way derived >from Zeingorodzki or if it is a different
name entirely.

I have found nothing on either of the surnames.

Does anyone have anything on either of the names ZEINGORODZKI or ZWERIG?

Israel Pickholtz

Israel,

"Ziengordski" is a corrupted version of surname Zvenigrodsky (
(Zwienogrodsky or Zvwnigorodzki).
Clue for the surname is their town of origin - Lebiedin, Russia (today
Ukraine) which is located less than 30 miles >from town Zvenigorodka,
origin of the Zvenigordzki surname.

Ellis Island database shows arrival on June 4, 1905 of:
Svenigorodsky Abram, age 24, married, student, Hebrew, Russia (last
residence - Paris) and Svenigorodsky Isaac, age 22, single, student,
Hebrew, Russia (last residence - Paris)

On July 30, 1905 arrived Zvinigorodsky David, age 30, single, tailor,
Hebrew, Russia (last residence - Paris)

JGFF database contains several entries for variations of this surname.

Best of luck,
