Help Locating a Perth Amboy New Jersey Cemetery #general

barrychernick@...

I am looking for the grave of an ancestor who died in 1907 in Keyport NJ.
The death certificate gives no place of burial but her obituary, in the
Keyport Weekly of Nov 8, 1907, says she was buried in the "Hebrew
Cemetery in Perth Amboy". I would like to find what cemetery that might.
Can anyone assist me in determining where she is buried?
Please respond privately.

If you save your images in .jpg format and your text in .rtf format there
should be no problems. You could also save the text portion in .doc format
for those that have Microsoft Word and .txt for those computer users that
have other word processing programs. .jpg is the most universal image
format and can be utilized by all.

Lithuanian article on Keidan #lithuania

A. Cassel <acassel@...>

Fellow Keidaners,

Is anyone on the list fluent in Lithuanian? Or know someone who can
translate Lithuanian to English? Wolf Bergholtz has discovered a recent
article on the history and development of Keidan by a Lithuanian architect
and city planner, Algimantas Miskinis. He's sent me a xerox of the piece,
and >from the photos and historical maps it seems well worth reading. It's
not short: about 30 pages double-columned in 8x10 format (although with lots
of photos & maps). If we can get it translated, I'd be happy to make copies
available via the web or email. I' might ask some local Lithuanian community
folks here about looking for a translator, but thought first of trying list
members directly. It also might be necessary to take up a collection to fund
a translation. This could be a valuable addition to our knowlege of Keidan
and its history, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

All the best,

Andy Cassel

Gail,

If you're interested, why not email the authors directly? Their emails are
listed on the JewishGen website:
Rose Lerer Cohen (Jerusalem) rlc@shani.net
Dr Saul Issroff (London) saul@swico.demon.co.uk

I'm sure they'd be willing to direct you to the relevant volume.

All the best,

Andy Cassel

I've just discovered that Rose Cohen and Saul Issroff compiled a 4
volume Book of Remembrance for Lithuanian holocaust victims. These
books are rather expensive so I don't want to purchase all the volumes.
Does anyone know which of these volumes contain the names of the Jews of
Keidan?

Thanks for your help.

VALLENTINE #germany

Adam Yamey <adamandlopa@...>

In 1883 Sigmund SELIGMANN (>from Ichenhausen in Germany), a relative of my
mother, and Moss VALLENTINE started a business in Dordrecht, Cape Colony,
and later in Barkly East.

As the business in Barkly East became more successful, Seligmann employed
a Jack VALLENTINE as a clerk.

In 1889 Ernestine PERLMUTTER left Ichenhausen for S. Africa. She married
Sigmund Seligmann in Port Elizabeth. Jack Vallentine married Erestines's
sister Helene PERLMUTTER when she came out to Barkly East.

I have recently visited Barkly East and saw Jack Vallentine's grave there.
The grave of Jack VALLENTINE gives the following information:

"In loving memory of JACK VALLENTINE, sixth son of Philip Vallentine of
London. Died at Barkly East 7 March 1897 aged 32 years." There is also a
Hebrew inscription.

I would like to know if Moss and Jack VALLENTINE are related, and in what
way. Also I would be keen to have any more information about the
VALLENTINE family and also the PERLMUTTER family.

As this query covers three countries, Germany,S.Africa and the UK, I have
placed it on several SIG discussion lists.

Please reply to Adam Yamey, London, UK adamandlopa@yahoo.co.uk

Tuberculosis/Farmingdale Prematorium #general

Elise Friedman <elise@...>

My grandfather and his younger brother were sent to Farmingdale
Prematorium in NJ by the NYC Department of Health after their father died
of tuberculosis in 1926. Does anyone know if records exist for this place
and where? Would the Department of Health have records since they pulled
the children out of their home? My grandfather recalls being there for
about 12-15 months.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Restoration of Cemeteries #ukraine

Gary Gershfield <gmgkpc@...>

I am trying to find out the possibilities of restoring Jewish cemeteries in
the Ukraine. My paternal ancestors came >from the town of Druzhkopol, which is
now called---- Zhuravniki. In the International Cemetery Project,it lists
the Jewish cemetery as consisting of mass and unmarked graves. It would sound
based on this that there would be no hope.
Nevertheless,I have learned that there have
been cemeteries in Europe that have been restored, but which had a similar
description in the International Cemetery Project.
Your comments would be gratefully appreciated.
