tell you that it appears to be similar to the surname of some of my friends, KARPELES, who still have current day family in Bosnia or Serbia. Their last name is. I therefore suggest looking around that area for the shtetl. Best of luck and happy New Year. Barbara Sloan New Haven, CT

Searching: SACHS and/or LAUFER from Thuringia
#germany
Shirley Rosen <shirli@...>
I posted this request several years ago to no avail, so I am hoping
that new readers or new information among regulars will bring help. I am searching for information about and the descendents of Isaac SACHS, born Nov 1859 in Berkach, Thuringia, Germany, second son of Hirsch SACHS and Sophie EISEMANN. He was the brother of my grandfather, Simon SACHS. Simon lived, married and died in Berkach and had children there, among them my father. There are good records for births, marriages and deaths for Berkach, but no mention is made of Isaac after his birth. As far as I know no connection was maintained with Isaac by family members. Nevertheless there is a family rumor (so far never verified, but this is all I know), that Isaac's descendents came to Palestine at some point with the name LAUFER. This may indicate a daughter or granddaughter of Isaac marrying a LAUFER. Today, if anyone is still alive, we would be talking about grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Isaac SACHS. If anyone has any connection or ancestors named SACHS >from Berkach or nearby villages, please contact me. I've had great luck with Jewish Gen/Gersig help before, so I am optimistic again. Shirley Sachs Rosen, Beer Sheva, Israel Searching: SACHS: Berkach (Thuringen) > Worcester MA. To everyone who responded about the similarities of SUKOENIG
and SUKENIK, you were all right on the money, and provided further evidence of why soundex is so important. Apparently, Cantor Abraham SUKOENIG changed the spelling of his name to make it sound more Germanic (don't ask). I know of some SUKENIKs >from NYC who are Kohans. They asked me if my cousins are also, since that would be the first possible clue in a link. Unfortunately, within two generations the family had become highly assimilated, and my cousins do not even know whether or not they are Kohanim - which I suppose would make an interesting topic in and of itself. KLEIN/Munkacs
#hungary
Potchins@...
My grandmother's application for citizenship shows her "birth place" as
Berwich, Munich, Hungary. I came across the town Bereg Monkacs. Because of her accent, I believe this to be her birth place altho her son claims she was born in Maramos, Transylvania. Are these two towns close by? I find absolutely nothing for her in my years of research, which as you all know is frustrating. Her maiden name was Rosa Klein. She came to the US 6/11/1887 on the SS Varrows. No records can be found corraborating this information. Any help would be very much appreciated. I found information on her husband (Austrian) and would very much like to start something on my grandmother. Thank you. Maxine Potchinsky potchins@aol.com Moderator VK: I've taken the liberty of changing the subject of your message to reflect the content. FYI, Munkacs (now Mukaceve, Ukraine) was previously in Bereg megye (County) Hungary. Have you checked the passenger lists filmed by the Family History Library to see if they include the manifest for your grandmother's voyage? Maramaros was an adjacent county in the area of pre-Trianon Hungary that was called Transylvania. Munkacs and the northern portion of Maramaros megye were ceded to the newly created nation of Czechoslovakia after WWI but more recently became part of the Ukraine. Jewish residents of Bereg and Maramaros were likely to have similar accents. I suspect that the majority grew up in Yiddish-speaking households but, depending on when they went to school, may have been able to understand and probably speak Hungarian as well. Check the Munkacs burial lists on the H-SIG website to see if any KLEIN family members are listed.

Rabbi Mordechai ZACKHEIM-"Ruzhiner- Pinsk 19th cent.
#general
yonatan@...
Several days ago I fielded a search request regarding a Rabbi
Mofdechai RUDINER of Pinsk. After seraching several geneological reference books I think I stumbled on the solutions to my research problems, thanks to a reply >from a fellow genner, Itzchak Epstein. The name RUDINER is probably an understandable mistake for RUZHINER (daled and Zayin in hebrew script are very similiar). According to Epstein's lead and checking other sources it seems that the relative mentioned in my gguncle's diary is Mordechai ZACKHEIM who served as the AB"D (chief rabbinical judge)of Pinsk during the latter decades of the 19th cent. I understand, that he originated from Ruzhinoi and married the Rabbi of Pinsk, Rabbi Shmuel AvigdorTOSEFAA and succeeded him in his post in Pinsk, but was refered to as R' Mordechai (0f)RUZHINER. Now to finish and put everything into place, does anyone, and I understand that the ZACKHEIM's are a well known Rabbinical family, have the immediate geneology of this specific Mordechai ZACKHEIM. I've checked superficially (before having stumbled over this mistake) Friedman's hebrew language "Otzar Harabanim" (Which mentions TOSEFAA but I don't remember him forwarding me to any other relative)and Rosenstein's "The Unbroken Chain" which mentions Mordechai ZACKHEIM and his Rabbinical position in Pinsk but doesn't lead me further. Again thank you Itzchak Epstein. Yoni Ben-Ari, Jerusalem/Efrat
