Updating your addresses! #france

The following message is posted here with the permission of John Paul
Lowens, the originator, Coordinator of the GerSIG.
===========================
On December 29, Susan King, the founder and President of
JewishGen spoke to the New York Jewish Genealogy Society and answered
questions >from those attending, including this one:

" Can you do anything about entries in the JGFF (Jewish
Genealogy Family Finder) database and other JewishGen data bases which
contain stale (out of date) Email addresses and other contact data ? "

(The JGFF allows anyone to find out who is researching a given FAMILY
NAME or town of origin or NAME/town combination. The FTJP [Family Tree
of the Jewish People] offers similar information and more.)

To know that another researcher has been working on your family history
and not be able to contact that person can be very frustrating. But if
you change your Email (or snail mail) address and / or telephone number
and don't also change your JGFF and other JewishGen entries that will be
the case.

It would be a wonderful way to begin this exciting new year
for JewishGen if all of us would go to the JGFF at:

http://www.jewishgen.org/jgff/ click on "LIST"

and there review and update your entries in the database.

(You will need to have your JewishGen RESEARCHER CODE and your
JewishGen Password to make any desired changes.)

Those numbers will become more important in the future when enhancements
to the JewishGen Site are added. Be sure that yours are available and
backed up safely. (Susan said.)

If you have not yet listed your family names and towns in the JGFF you
should do so soon. This will possibly help your research and that of
others and will provide you with a JewishGen researcher code and
password which will become more important to you in the future.
(According to Susan.)

If you can, take advantage of the "lifetime Email" service that is
provided by many universities to their former students. Or, get a
"lifetime email" address >from bigfoot.com or POBOX.com or other services
that provde them.

Mail sent to such a "lifetime Email address" is immediately forwarded to
your current Email inbox so long as you inform the "lifetime" provider
of your current address.

JewishGen is planning to devote volunteer and staff time and precious
money to try to correct "stale" Email information in the JGFF and other
data bases. (According to Susan King's remarks yesterday)

Surely there are much better ways to use that money and effort.

So, if you experience a bounced email message after using an email
address listed in the JGFF, please report it to:
<LostNFound@lyris.jewishgen.org>, giving the name of the person you are
attempting to reach, their JGFF Researcher Code number, the e-mail
address you used that bounced, and the bounced message. The LostNFound
Support Team will do its best to locate the person and notify you of the
results of their search.

Through our lists we may be able to get a correction entered.

And please check your JGFF and other entries soon and be sure that they
are up to date. Thanks to all.

re Seeking family of London Blitz bomb victim Nat JACOBS #general

A J <genealicej@...>

Thank you so much to everyone who has written to me, pointing
out that Nat (Nathaniel) JACOBS is listed on the Commonwealth
Graves Commission website < www.cwgc.org > as a civilian victim
of the Blitz. Nat was one of the first victims of the Blitz and
died in September 1940. Also that there is a fishmonger in Edgware
of the same name!

I am still looking for the four children of Nat and Mary JACOBS:
Anita (served in the ATS and married to a post war manager of
Barclays Bank, Gants Hill), David, possibly Jack and the youngest,
a girl with a name beginning with M.

Please contact me privately if you know anything.

Let me add to Michael's valid conclusion that English-language
terms such as "first cousin twice removed" are imprecise because
they do not indicate which of the two cousins is two generations
older than the other. It would be like using the same word for
nephew and uncle.
The terminology is imprecise for the purpose of genealogy. For the
purpose for which it was devised, namely the determination of the
*degree* of relationship, not the genealogical relationship between
them. A specification such as "first cousins twice removed" does
indeed describe how closely the two persons are related; apparently
that is all that is necessary for deciding who is the rightful
claimant to the throne of Ruritania, or to the estate of an oil
baron deceased intestate.

For our purposes as genealogists, such terms are inadequate, and
have to be accompanied by supplementary information, as Michael and
Israel have said.

Michael's suggestion for an alternate use for the term "removed",
namely to describe the status of a divorced spouse, is intriguing,
especially for e.g. movie stars that remarry the same person several
times. We all recognize the superannuated actress who had at least
one "ex-husband twice removed". Another way to recycle the term
would be for troublesome saloon clients, who may be even "five times
removed".

Re: Searching for Roswwenthal and Wembley England #general

CharlesPottins

As you say, Kevin, many people still add the county in their
postal address, and I'm one of them! But the reason I mentioned
Middlesex was that telling someone Wembley is part of the London
Borough of Brent, though true, would not help locate it for
postal purposes, though it might be useful for recent records.
(maybe some other genner will know where to find the old old
Middlesex records?) To check the full postcode you need to know
the house number. (and to further confuse matters some parts of
Wembley(the old borough before it merged with Willesden to form
Brent) have London postcodes, e.g. NW9 ----,, although others,
including, as it happens Wembley proper and Wembley Park Drive
has codes starting HA (presumably >from Harrow).

If you think this is complicated, some London boroughs stretch
over wide areas and maybe three or more postcode prefixes. (Ealing
has W3, UB and HA codes!) Hounslow was once a town in Middlesex,
so was Brentford, but the London borough of Hounslow which takes
in both also includes Chiswick which is just west London. People
in the outer parts of the borough still talk about "going into
London".

And if you posted a letter to someone in Chiswick, but didn't
know the W4 postcode, so put "Hounslow", it might take some time
to reach them. So the bit to leave out is the borough!

Dear Genners--
I have posted VM Image 2045. I'm not sure what it is. Is it traveling papers, transcription papers?? I also don't know who it was issued to, but I'm wondering if it was for my ggf, Yisreal Eysik Goldberg. Or a Feldman. Found it years ago with some of my gmother's papers. I also don't know if it's Russian or Cyrillic. If anyone could tell me what it is and maybe some of the name details, I would be very thankful.
