I recently discovered a photo taken in New York City in either 1959 or 1960.

I believe that this picture was taken at a family function of the
SLOMOVITZ, FOX, and/or Fisher families. The picture is now on on
ViewMate.VM2063. I would appreciate any help in identify any of the people
in the picture.

Thank You

MALTZ of Dukla, Poland(Galicia) #general

Just found some new information at the Mormon Library!

My G-G-Grandfather was Samuel MALTZ (also spelled MALCZ) of Dukla, Poland,
formerly Galicia. He was born around 1850 and married to Leni KESZTENBAUM.
Sons Jozsef and Vilmos were born in Northeastern Hungary. Please contact
me privately if you have any information about this family. Thank you.

Can't find Nov 1907 arrival of SS President Grant on EIDB #general

Steinsteve@...

I found an individual (Banny FEIN) who supposedly arrived on the President
Grant on Nov 6, 1907. Morton Allan says it arrived on Nov 4. The image it
points to is the Samland of the same date, and doesn't contain the
individual; when I search for an individual on the image, it finds him
correctly.

So I walked through a half-dozen microfilms >from 11/2/07 thru 11/12/07 and
can't find the arrival of the President Grant.

I used all the Morse tools to no avail. Any suggestions? Can anyone find
it? Thanks.

Two questions- JACOBS family in New York and census #general

mkshapiro@...

I have two questions to ask the group-

1) I recently discovered my father's uncle in the 1930's census. His name
was Joseph Jacobs, actually he was married to my grandfather's sister
(father's aunt) Belka Shapiro. In the census she is listed as Bessie.
They were in the soda business in Queens, New York. They had four children
Herman, Gertrude, Irving and Jacob (Johnny ?) If anybody is doing research
on this name please contact me privately.

2) When I discovered my great uncle Joseph Jacobs on the census there was
an abbreviation of "pa" in the citizenship column. What does this mean?
Are there papers for application on file somewhere-state?

Thanks for your assistance

Hello there...I wonder if the Zylber/Zilber name might be related to
Silver/Silber. I have forwarded your request for information to my cousin,
Frank Silver (he resides in Pensacola, FL, USA), who has compiled quite a
bit of research regarding the Silver/Silber family. They originated from
either Lithuania or Kovno.
I hope that he can help you.
Sincerely,
Laura Friedman

Dear Genners-
So many of you have helped decipher the document I posted on VM2045 as a
travel document for Yudel Ariya Leibovich Levitan. On VM2046 is the back

your help again in translating what the writing says, I may be able to
shed a little more light on a big mystery!

Re: The book about Mogilev Jews #belarus

David Fox <davefox73@...>

I want to thank Leonid for letting everyone know about this book. When
I was in Mogilev in 1999, I met with Alexander Litin, Leonid, and others
who had expressed an interest in writing a book about the history of the
Jews of Mogilev. No Yizkor book had ever been written about Mogilev.

About three weeks ago, I received a message >from Mr. Litin informing me
that Volume I of a two volume book had been published in Russian with
500 copies. Most of these books have already been distributed to people
in Mogilev and to different libraries. The first volume covers the
period >from the middle ages to the fall of the czar. The second volume
will cover the period after the fall of the czar, including the
holocaust period. Mr. Litin is trying to raise $5,000 to cover the cost
of finishing the second volume which he estimates will take >from 12-18
months. He and his colleagues need to travel to Moscow, St. Petersburg,
and Minsk to do some research for the book. They are planning to print
more then 500 copies of the second volume.

Volume I - More Information:
1. I have an English translation of the table of contents and will have
this placed on the SIG website in the near future.

2. I have a Word document in Russian with a listing of the 200 photos
and illustrations contained in Volume I. IS THERE ANYONE WHO CAN
VOLUNTEER TO TRANSLATATE this list into English so we can include the
translation on the website? Please contact me by private email, if you
can do the translation and I will email the file.

3. Mr. Litin has authorized me to have the book translated into English
and arrange for publishing it in English. I am in negotiations with a US
university to have students under faculty supervision translate Volume I
using grant funds. Once this is completed, the University will publish
it in English through their university press. We will make arrangements
for the JewishGen Mall to sell this book.

Volume II - More Information
1. As mentioned above, Mr. Litin needs funding to complete volume II. I
have made attempts to reach Kirk Douglas through a rabbi at the
Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. As most of you know, Mr. Douglas'
parents immigrated to the US >from Mogilev. I saw his grandfather's grave
in the Mogilev Jewish cemetery when I was there. I have not received a
response yet. IF THERE IS ANYONE WHO HAS A WAY TO REACH MR. DOUGLAS
EITHER DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, PLEASE CONTACT ME.

2. Mr. Litin has identified some documents located in the United States
Holocaust Museum in Washington DC that he needs to complete the second
volume. Most of these records are on a single roll of microfilm and
contain the Extraordinary Commission Reports and lists. I have a
commitment >from a USHMM volunteer who will direct one of our SIG members
on which records to copy and how to use the machines. This volunteer has
Russian skills, but is only available on Wednesdays. DO WE HAVE ANYONE
IN THE WASHINGTON DC AREA WHO CAN VOLUNTEER A FEW WEDNESDAYS TO MAKE
PAPER COPIES >from THE MICROFILM? There will be no expense to you. If you
can do this, please contact me and I will put you in contact with the
volunteer who works at the Museum on Wednesdays so that you can arrange
to meet and do the work.

3. If anyone has any material (photos, documents, letters, or other
data) about Mogilev they would like to share with Mr. Litin that
might be useful for the second volume, please let me know if what you
have and if it is in electronic format or hard copy.

4. After volume II is completed, we will also use the same procedure to
have the book translated and published in English by the university.

Here is an opportunity for SIG members to help document the history of
the Jews of Mogilev. I hope that some of you will be able to help in
some of the ways I have suggested above.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.
