Under a place search, use "New York, New York (second one on the list).

The film numbers are 523274 - 523310.

Dear Group-

I am trying to do some NYC 1915 census lookups, and I have a bit of a easy
question. I've found the Assembly and Election District numbers, but I
can't seem to find the films! A search through the Family History Center
Catalog for the NYC 1915 census led me to the films for Kings, Richmond,
Queens, and Bronx counties, but I only need the films for Manhattan. I
have found the films for the 1905 and 1925 census. Where am I going wrong?

Other Hamburg Passengers-and Kovno #general

sallybru <sallybru@...>

While looking through the Hamburg Passenger List information, I found a film
of odd things: Film 1732431

Jewish returnees, 1905-1907
Returnees, 1906-1913
Emigrants >from Kovno 1897-1899
Emigrants not on emigrant ships 1871-1887
Emigrants sent by rail to other ports (because of WWI) 1913-1914

So if you have people who you think swam the Atlantic because you can't find
their passenger lists, try this!

Great news!
The 1828 Hungarian Property Tax Census database is now on-line at:

Check it out!

Kudos to all those volunteers who have been working so diligently to put
together this valuable resource.

The database is still in its infancy, but already contains 8,000 names,
and growing. We hope to complete the effort over the next 12 months,
but we need additional volunteers to transcribe names >from LDS
microfilm. If you have access to a FHC library and would like to help,
please let me know at: bloch@.... You do *not* need to know
Hungarian. There is no translation required since the names were all
written in Latin characters.

Happy searching!

1901 U.K. Census #general

l r <drees@...>

On the whole, I was quite stunned by the amount of information available
on the 1901 U.K. Census, but there were some errors which probably
occurred during the transcription.

On my initial (free) access, I found my paternal g/parents and two of
their children,( my father and his brother), although I knew they had
more children at that time.

The ages of my brother & father did not appear to be correct, but when I
obtained access to "Persons in Household" four children were listed, all
with correct ages. Initially, my father's correct first name, Barnet,
was listed, but in the expanded version it is "Barrett".

Also, I knew my g/parents came >from Darsniskis, Lith,, but under the
"where born" heading, "Hamburgh, Germany" was listed. This was
probably their port of emigration and this could have been mistakenly
given to the census taker.

My maternal & paternal g/parents had numerous siblings all over England
and it was quite exciting checking out my aunts, uncles & cousins who
had arrived there by that year. Not only that, I came >from a small
community in S.Wales and I looked up many of the names I remembered from
my childhood.

Wouldn't it be great if the U.S. Govt.
put the 1910, 1920 & 1930 Census online with free access initially, then
a small charge to download? (And what a tremendous source of revenue
that would generate!).

Lynne brings up some very good points. The biggest issue, I believe is the
one of privacy. Unfortunatley there are those who look to capitalize on
other peoples misfortunes. By publishing personal data on those that
perished, it may open up the door for such things. A lot of these people
have living parents, siblings and children. To publish the personal data in
a publically accessable datase raises a lot of privacy issues. Look at it
this way - do you want your name, address, phone number, name of spouse,
children's names, religon, and parents names published for all to see?
Granted armed with a credit card, internet access and a name I can get most
of this information, probably more. But why make it any easier?

Jewish "House Lists!" Attn: Latvian (& Lithuanian) researchers #general

NFatouros@...

Yesterday, while doing a websearch for a surname (which was not in the least
related to any of mine) I came upon some astonishing websites which I don't
think anyone else in this forum has mentioned, although I believe members of
the Courland Research Group may be aware of them.

They are at:

http://www.ej-anders.com/users/pberkay/Ind55.htm

http://www.ej-anders.com/users/pberkay/IndSeel.htm

Here one can find "house lists" for Jews living on or near various estates
in or near:

Jakobstadt
Klein Salven,
Dausewass,
Herbergen,
Ilsenberg,
Kurmen,
Linden Pastorate,
Alt Memelhof,
Gross Memelhoff,
Nerft and Sussey,
Pikaln, Gross Salven,
and Gross and Klein Sussey.

These Jewish house lists are taken >from the 1797 Neft and Ascheraden Parish
Census and >from various nineteenth century registers and directories for
Jacobstadt.

Clicking on the buttons for each of the above listed places will bring up
detailed lists of various persons and their family members. Many of them
were involved with inn-keeping but I noted at least one schoolmaster. I did
not examine any of these lists very carefully as I do not have ancestors
from any of these places.
I am sending copies of this message to Harold Rhode and Professor Jerry
Esterson because, after checking through the Discussion Group Archives and
elsewhere, I learned that Harold Rhode is interested in Memelhof, while
Jerry is interested in the surname KURMAN or KURMEN (and there is a listing
at this URL for Jews who lived near the KURMEN private estate).

Even if nobody else in this forum has ancestors >from the above places, this
website interesting to visit.

Thanks are to be given by those whose ancestors were Latvian and/or
Lithuanian to Dr.Paul Berkay whose websites these are.

Hello Everyone--

I am hoping that someone can help me in my journey. Between the 1920 and
1930 my grandfather got in some trouble in Warsaw for being I guess what
they called a Roof gamblers and for stealing food to survive. He was
required to leave Warsaw in 1927. I was wondering if there was a way to
get hold of the Police records that were kept on him. In a translated letter
from my g grandmother Feigla Broman maiden name Borenstein she tells about
how on the streets of Nizka #53 and U.l. Smocza # 55 the Police came to
her and brought her to the Police Station and questioned her about her son
Abraham Broman ( thats my grandfather). Feigla Broman was married to
Samuel Broman.I am asking for help in this matter because I dont know where
to turn to. Thanks for all your time and effort in thia matter it's greatly
appreciated.
