Date
1930 One Step Site Cities #general

Joel Weintraub <jweintraub@...>

I just want to update the JewishGen group on the number of cities, and new
city additions to our 1930 street name database. We are starting to add
cities that are on the National Archives film series M1931, a cross index
of street addresses to enumeration district numbers. A few days ago we
added Detroit Michigan, and tonight we are in the process of adding
Queens, NY (thanks to volunteer Kat Mutter). There are now about 235
cities on our website, with only about 22 remaining to be done on our
target list. I anticipate we will, within 1 to 3 months, have on the site
every US city that had a population in 1930 of 45,000 people or more.

Viewmate 1747 - Clothing?Date? #general

Carleolady@...

Dear people,

Recently there was a discussion on clothing and how it may indicate where
the person lived or perhaps religious affiliation. Since I received no
responses the last time I posted this photo on viewmate, i thought I'd
try again.

The photograph is my gggf Ansel Asher SHEININ >from Mogilev or perhaps
Ukraine--farming colony. He was born in 1825 (about). Can someone offer
any ideas? Also, I'd like to know what the object is that he is leaning
on. Thanks very much.

Please respond to me personally unless you think the info might be of
general use.

Use Obituaries for Research #general

David Simon Bendory <david90@...>

I spent hours over the past weeks combing through local newspapers in
search of obituaries. While some are quite "standard" and don't have
any new information, others have a wealth of new tidbits.

Examples: Did you know what synagogue the deceased attended? What
charitable organizations they were involved with? All the places they
lived?

Sometimes you get lucky (strange to say about an obituary) and find
that all the siblings and / or children are listed with accompanying
town names. In one case, I even discovered siblings I didn't know
existed.

Also, maiden names are almost always included, and there is often a
residence of a family member (or the deceased) listed as the shiva
residence.

I had never gone after obituaries -- I've been getting death
certificates, thinking they had all the relevant information. But they
only have the "hard facts."

As we all no doubt reflect upon our lives as Rosh HaShanah approaches,
we should remember that those we research are not just the composite
facts we gather. They had lives full of hobbies and interests, just
like we do.

A Shana Tova to all and a message from our hosts at Jewishgen #warsaw #poland

Hadassah Lipsius <kesher@...>

Dear Friends:

As we prepare to celebrate the New Year please take a moment to consider
that JewishGen provides us with the vital source for our ongoing
genealogical research. JewishGen is still one of the only free
genealogical sitesfree to us, but not free to JewishGen who must bear the
monthly expense of providing all the resources we use daily without a
second thought. These are costs that must be met to overcome the current
shortfall.

To continue as a public service institution, JewishGen has launched the
first Annual New Year Donor Appeal. The goal is to raise $300,000 to carry
us through to the end of 2002 and to acquire the necessary hardware and
software applications for improved databases scheduled to begin going
online by October. There are two million records >from Yad Vashem and
other sources waiting to be made available to us!

The financial support of each and every one of us is needed if JewishGen is
to continue as the only free site for Jewish genealogical research. Give
what you can afford, be it $25, the suggested annual minimum, or $100 (or
more) which will enroll you in the JGFFAlert. This is a system that
informs you via immediate e-mail if another researcher enters data into the
JGFF that has the potential of linking to your family names.

Please go now to
http://www.jewishgen.org/jewishgen-erosity/contribute.ihtml. With your
permission, your name will be listed on a special 2002 Annual New Year
Donor Appeal recognition site. We are asking that all our users make a
donation to the very best of their financial ability. Consider scheduling a monthly deduction
from your credit card if this works best for you.
On behalf of JewishGen and our very best wishes
for a healthy, happy and peaceful New Year.

1875 arrival #general

Suzecrazy@...

Hello again,
I'm looking at my Great grandfather's naturalization papers.
Listen to this one!! He says he arrived in New York on or about the
(squiggle) day of (squiggle) 1875. He resides at 87 Rivington? St and
is a merchant. He is a subject of Austria.
I know that Ellis Getzler had a twin brother, but there is no sign of him.
The lack of an arrival date makes it hard to find anything else, I think.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you,
Susan Stock

Visiting the Family Records Centre in Islington? #general

Robert Gleek <Robert.Gleek@...>

Dear British Genners,
I know this is a chutspah but I wondered if anyone is
planning to visit the Family Records Centre in Islington?
I am hoping someone may be kind enough to do a quick birth entry look-up.
I am snowed under with work and can't get there myself you see...
I have an accurate date and know it is cheeky,
but since it is the New Year I am hoping someone will take pity on me!
Thank you in advance - and please respond privately,
Best Wishes,
