Genners,

Just a couple of observations to Larry Kriv's suggestions for ordering
microfilms >from an FHL branch. I would strongly suggest checking what
they have in their permanent collection before ordering. In addition,
I've been known to browse what others have recently ordered.

It's also possible, I believe, for you to put something into the permanent
collection yourself, for an additional fee (I'm not certain about that).
Larry's posting may have inadvertently suggested that the films can be
taken off-site, which is definitely not the case.

1930 US Census Occupation Codes #general

Joel Weintraub <jweintraub@...>

Let me add to Joan's post about Occupation Codes on the U.S. Census. Those
codes were added well after the enumeration was done. They are useful if
you can't read the handwriting on the schedule, but can read the code. The
IPUMS site does not presently have the codes for the 1930 Census. We have
those codes in our Census Utility section of the One Step 1930 Census site.

JewishGen needs your support #usa

Rachel Unkefer <rachel@...>

Dear Friends:

As we prepare to celebrate the New Year please take a moment to
consider that JewishGen provides us with the vital source for our
ongoing genealogical research. JewishGen is still one of the only
free genealogical sites free to us, but not free to JewishGen who
must bear the monthly expense of providing all the resources we use
daily without a second thought. These are costs that must be met to
overcome the current shortfall.

To continue as a public service institution, JewishGen has launched
the first Annual New Year Donor Appeal. The goal is to raise
$300,000 to carry us through to the end of 2002 and to acquire the
necessary hardware and software applications for improved databases
scheduled to begin going online by October. There are two million
records >from Yad Vashem and other sources waiting to be made
available to us!

The financial support of each and every one of us is needed if
JewishGen is to continue as the only free site for Jewish
genealogical research. Give what you can afford, be it $25, the
suggested annual minimum, or $100 (or more) which will enroll you in
the JGFFAlert. This is a system that informs you via immediate
e-mail if another researcher enters data into the JGFF that has the
potential of linking to your family names.

Please go now to
http://www.jewishgen.org/jewishgen-erosity/contribute.ihtml. With
your permission, your name will be listed on a special 2002 Annual
New Year Donor Appeal recognition site. We are asking that all our
users make a donation to the very best of their financial ability.
Consider scheduling a monthly deduction >from your credit card if this
works best for you.

On behalf of JewishGen and the EarlyAmerican SIG, our very best
wishes for a healthy, happy and peaceful New Year.

Sthasov, Poland #general

sallybru <sallybru@...>

I just found a new clan of Ruslanders thanks to a Jewishgen message about
the 1901 London Census online; now I am wondering what the town is where
they came from.

According to the census, which is pretty legible, they were >from Sthasov,
Poland-possibly Sthasor, but it looks like a v, and I would guess v in
Poland anyway.

Shtetl Seeker suggests this is Szczekaczewo, north of Warsaw. Anything is
possible as the family was all over by 1900, but originally they were in
Northeast Poland (by today's map). Does anyone have other ideas? Or
information?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Getting the Correct Manifest #general

Joe Newman <jdaanew@...>

EI is full of search errors. For example, try finding a 1906 manifest
image. Chances are its not there. I have emailed EI and never gotten any
responses, nor ad anything fixed. Previously one might try Stephen
Morse's 'missing manifests' website. It is shut down now, hopefully
temporarily.

In the meantime, your best bet is to order the films through a FHL (Latter
Days Saints Family History Library). You can find the film numbers on the
jewishgen site. Try this link:
http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/PassLists/NewYork.html
or the LDS library catalog:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp .

It was encouraging the 'EIDB success' posting on 9/4. An image >from 1906
was found by this poster after a long wait. So I went back and looked for
my 1906 manifest and an image finally came up! Alas, it was the wrong
ship! Oh well, my microfilm >from LDS should be here in a week or two.

Hello Genners and Happy New Year to all!
I was excited to find my grandmother's brother's name on the Ellis
Island site. I went for the "gold" and clicked on the original manifest
only to find the incorrect manifest and no listing for my possible
relative Leibe Soloncz. I clicked on text manifest and found that he
came to America on the ship the Patricia, November 20, 1903. He is on
that manifest list but only text. When I click on the original
manifest, it brings up La Bretagne, arriving November 23, 1903 and Leibe
is not on the list. EI has mixed it up. How do I let them know of
this error? Is their anyway I can get the correct manifest as it is on
the site now? If anyone out there understands my problem, I would so
appreciate your help. Thank you.

Ordering the 1930 Brooklyn City Directory would be a great idea, except
it doesn't exist. Neither the 1929 nor 1930 directory weres published
