Another possibility is that the woman had two names
Mariem Itte, which many people had even then.

The man taking down this information may have heard
them as one name. Later the woman simply
preferred the second name.
(My sister never uses her first name!)

FREIDBERG / LUNTZ - Siauliai, Lithuania #rabbinic

Ann Rabinowitz <annrab@...>

Recently, someone posted about the FREIDBERG family. Since then, I
found the following reference to a FREIDBERG related to the LUNTZ
family >from Siauliai, Lithuania:

1. Gaon Rabbi Yechezkel LUNTZ
2. Rabbi Getzel LUNTZ
3. Mordechai LUNTZ
m. Yudita FREIDBERG, >from Kovno (Koshidar)
3. Rabbi Meir LUNTZ
4. Rabbi Yakov Moshe LUNTZ
5. ? LUNTZ
m. Shlomo CHRONZETZKI

The Luntz family was associated with the Kloiz de Aglonim (Carters'
Kloiz) in Siauliai, particularly Rabbi Yehuda Leib LUNTZ.

Unfortunately, I do not have any dates associated with the people
above.

Sorry, but I do not know anything further regarding either of these
two families.

Jewish agricultural collectives in Russia #general

Marty Meyers <meyers01@...>

Hi,

Can someone tell me about Jewish agricultural collectives in Russia or
point me to a reference?

Does anyone know about one in Karniewo, near Ciechanow/Pultusk north of Warsaw?

I've heard it an elderly relative, born near there, refer to it as an a
Jewish agricultural kibbutz.

The little I know is that there were very few Jews (< 50) and that a
relative owned a flour mill and bought/processed
grain >from local farmers.

I'm interested in both specific information about Karniewo as well as
general information about Jewish agricultural collectives.

Thanks,

Marty Meyers

I know nothing of Dr. Garber's GARBER or GARBERMAN ancestors, but of
Slovechno my 1962 Columbia Lippincott gazetteer says it was (at least at time
of the gazetteer's printing) an agricultural town, which in 1926 had a
population of 2,223. It is located on the edge of the Pripet marshes, in the
north Zhitomir oblast, 32 miles north northwest of Korosten. It was known for
flax, buckwheat and potatoes.

Miriam Weiner's "Jewish Roots in Ukrainw and Moldova" shows records for
Slavuta are located in Kamenets Podolskiy and for the Slavuta Region in
Khmelnitskiy. She has no listing for Slovechno in particular.

Hello
I need some research done in the archives at Chisinau for records
pertaining to Ataki.

Does anyone know a researcher that will do the work, at a reasonable
price, or is is just as efficient to write to the archives themselves?

PLEASE RESPOND PRIVATELY: mgleiser@...

I had a look at the image at Viewmate and thought it said "Russia, Balky".

So I went prowling on the internet and found this website:

http://www.personal.ceu.hu/students/97/Roman_Zakharii/map-bar.gif

It shows a map of the area around Bar, Letichev, Deraznja and other towns.

Very near and east southeast of Bar, is Balky.

If Balky is this town, then its records may be found among those
Miriam Weiner lists for Bar in her "Jewish Roots in Ukraine and Moldova."
Some of these records are located in Vinnitsa, others in Kamenets Podolskiy.

Marion Werle brings up an interesting point in the last digest. She
mentioned that
"(I even have one record, where a relative went back for a visit to
Lithuania in the 1920's/30's, where the exact address of her sister in
Anyksciai is listed)."

How does one find departure information. My ggfather returned to Europe for
a visit and so did my grandfather. I have only seen and heard about
arrival information. Is there a place where one can find records of ship
departures >from the US in the1890's?
