Where is TORGAN? #ukraine

Psydneyh@...

Dear Genners;

My gf's surname is TORGAN, which is listed in Beider's Jewish Surnames of
the Russian Empire as meaning ">from Torgan". I can find only two places of
that name. One is a river in SW France, 50 km >from the Spanish border (which
does not seem likely, although not impossible), the other may be a town on
the Elbe R.

The problem with the Torgan on the Elbe is that I saw it on two antique
maps, the most recent 1745. The town (in the then-Prussian States)was
between Dresden and Magdeburg. Modern maps show a city called Turgau in its
place. Turgau is where the Russian troops met the Americans in World War
II. Is it possible that Turgau was Torgan?

Other possibilities are that, using soundex, towns caled Turchin, Turchyn,
and Torchin turn up in Ukraine. My gf's birthplace is Yelizavetgrad (now
Kirovograd, Ukraine).

Any help will be appreciated.

Dear Ruth,
I only included some sample names of towns. Priluki & Parafievka are indeed
in Chernigov. In fact, you may want to contact Sharen Hogarth & offer to
help with projects & data extraction. Her email address is:

Welcome to the Ukraine SIG.

I saw this on the list- "While on the subject of Lodz, JRI-Poland, one of
the chief presenters at the conference, is calling for volunteers to input
the thousands of names and particulars of the Lodz ghetto residents.
This will be a valuable resource for Jewish genealogists in the UK
and elsewhere whose ancestors may have been in the Lodz ghetto.
(If interested in participating, check the Lodz (LARG) SIG list.)"

I hope this is not going ahead, as these lists are already computerized at
Yad Vashem. We are currently finishing some technical problems, and should
have the computerized list in our database within a few 2-3 months.

Berlin 1896 Agriculture exhibition #germany

Udi Cain

Dear all.
In 1896 the exhibition of the agriculture in Eretz Israel’s settlements
took place in Berlin. The focus of the exhibition was the wine
production. The wine was apparently transported in barrels on boats from
Jaffa to ships sailing to the port of Breila, and >from there, by train, to
the continent.

Berlin Fair had lasted for nine months (6 months in Berlin and 3 months
in Köln).

The participators wore fezes and there is a photograph of my G'grandfather
during the event, wearing a fez. There was great demand for wine from
Eretz Israel, mainly due to the Hebrew labels on the bottles.

I'll very much appreciate any further information with regard to the
above. Best regards.
