What is a "FARIBLE" (Yiddish?) #general

Yigal Rechtman <yigal@...>

Hello,

What is a "FARIBLE" or "FARIEVEL"? We think it's Yiddish but we are not
sure if the origin of the word are not Dutch or even Russian.

Thanks.

Viewmate VM1665 Recognize name of town in Russia from manifest #ukraine

Joe Newman <jdaanew@...>

I was surprised to find that family members who had always said they were
from Ekaterinaslov (Dnepropetrovsk) were shown as emigrating >from there but
with a different birthplace in Russia.

Does anyone recognize this town name?

Purpose of List #unitedkingdom

Richard Dale <rmd.gen@...>

I am new to all this, and have noticed the recent discussions about
enlivening the list.

Can I ask the question as to the difference between this list and the
BRITISH-JEWRY-L list (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sherry/)?
They both seem to have similar traffic, but I thought this list was more
about making records available and the other list was more about general
queries, so now I am confused since having two such similar lists seems to
split our efforts rather than focus them.

Anything to clarify this would be useful.
Thanks

We have a Herman Bercovitz in our tree. He lived came to the US and settled
in St. Paul in 1900 and then moved to Los Angeles. I believe he was from
Romania and his name was Bercovici.

More accurately he may have come >from Bukovina which was included at one

He married my great aunt Tina Brucker, also >from Romania.

I wonder if Bercovitz and Berkovitz derive >from the same name, Bercovici or
