hoaxes and hoaxbusting #poland

Moshe and Racheli Ebner <mrebner@...>

When anyone EVER sends you a mailing telling you you should do something
with your computer such as forward a message or delete a file etc. where
it's clear to you that the message wasn't addressed personally and only to
you should immediately be suspicious and check out that message on
http://hoaxbusters.ciac.org/HBHoaxIndex.html
or a similar hoaxbusters site. these sites specialize in collecting all the
email hoaxes floating around the net (companies paying money for tracking
letters little girls dying of lukemia who want letters sent around the world
etc. etc.) so that people will know not to send these letters on. I
regularly get letters >from intelligent computer savvy people who dont bother
to check and pass on this junk without thinking or checking. And if you
don't want to check better not to forward the warning at all.
Think about it. If you have only 10 people on your mailing list (and I
assume most have more) and take 10 seconds to pass on one of these hoax
messages and each of them take 10 seconds to pass it on, in one minute's
worth of time 100,000 people have been spammed thanks to you without your
even meaning it. Take the 10 seconds instead to check out the letter on a
hoax site. Remember what you send out has YOUR name on it and is harming
YOUR friends and families and theirs - all cause of one mischiefmaker
somewhere. Don't let them make a fool out of you. If we're all a little
more aware we can beat this.

The name SHAYNA is the Yiddish name Sheyne.

MALKA is a Hebrew name normally pronounced Malke in Lithuania.

The name CHASA is the Yiddish name Khase, which was sometimes used as a
stand-alone name in Lithuania, and was also linked to the Hebrew name
Chana.

The name DOBA is the Yiddish name Dobe, which was also sometimes used as a
stand-alone name, and was also linked to the Hebrew name Dvoyre.

And the name CHAYA is Hebrew name which means "life", a common name in
Lithuania.

All of these names can be found in the JewishGen Given Names Data Base for
Lithuania at the website: http://www.jewishgen.org/litvak/srchlith.htm

You can use either Daitch Mokotoff Soundex or Exact Text searching. Each of the names has numerous other variants which should be considered during searches in the All Lithuania Database (ALD) for ancestors.

free virus software #romania

Andrew Blumberg <ajb61@...>

Hello everyone,

I have read the recent messages regarding viruses. Software maker
Symantec, maker of Norton Anti-Virus, makes available a number of free
tools that will detect and remove some of the most notorious viruses
from your computer. These tools are available for free >from the Symantec
web site at http://securityresponse.symantec.com/. Look for the section
titled "Removal Tools" This site will also tell you about the most
recent and most serious virus outbreaks.

The most recent problem appears to be the Bugbear virus. In the past few
days I have received 7 messages with this virus attached.

I hope that everyone will take the opportunity and make some time to
download some of these free tools and scan for viruses on a periodic
basis. While they are not nearly as good as running a full virus
scanning package these tools will locate and destroy specific viruses on
your computer.

Andrew Blumberg

MODERATOR NOTE: While these messages are not on topic they are
extremely important. It costs JewishGen megabucks to keep Lyris
virus free! Another reason to donate!

'Bugbear' worm opens backdoors (01-Oct-02)
Anti-virus companies warned computer users about a new worm that opens up a
backdoor in the computers and logs keystrokes.

Virus infections really happen on your home computer as well as at the
office. The only way to reduce the risk is to purchase a reliable antivirus
software and update it as often as possible! Stop being vulnerable!

This is one of several sites where you can learn more about it.

Re: Question regarding Latvia region #general

Arnold Davidson <arnoldbd@...>

Yaov Epelman asked about :

a very small village in the boarder between Lithuania and Latvia called
"Passele" and it was destroyed in WW2.
Passele appears to be near "Vekshna" in the country of "Mozsheker" -
??? Someone has an idea about these places?
I know about "Vekshna" because part of my own family was >from there but
not about the other towns. So this question provided an opportunity to do
some detective work using the JewishGen Shtetl Seeker. I started by
looking for "Vekshna" on the Stetl Seeker. The results of the search
showed that "Vekshna" was a variant name of the town now known as
Vieksniai, in northwest Lithuania, not far >from the Latvian border.
The latitude and longitude of Vieksniai are 5614 and 2231.

I then looked up phonetic variations of Mozsheker, specifying that I
wanted to find its distance relative to the latitude and longitude of
Vieksniai. The search turned up a number of names but only a few that
were within 25 miles of Vieksniai. One of them was now know as Meskiai,
which was about 9 miles S of Vieksnaiai - away >from Latvia. There were
two within 25 miles of Vieksniai that are now known as Mazeikiai, one of
which was about 21 miles ESE of Vieksniai, also away >from Latvia, and the
other was a Mazeikiai that was about 12 miles WNW of Vieksniai, almost
right on the border with Latvia. My guess is that this is the you are
seeking.

Finally, I looked up "Passele", also specifying that I wanted to find its
distance >from the latitude and longitude of Vieksniai. The search again
turned up a number of towns now known as Pasile. Most of them were S or E
of Vieksniai, away >from Latvia and Mazeikiai. One of them was about 26
miles W of Vieksniai, again not far >from the Latvian border.

If you click on the coordinates for each of these towns in Shtetl Seeker,
you are taken to maps generated by MapQuest, that you can print out and
use to see the whole picture.

All of your questions were answered, to a high level of probability, using
JewishGen's resources. Another reason to send thank-you donations to
JewishGen.

on "Owner Name" under Search, then you'll be prompted to choose the
county, then to choose the city/town and name to search for.

For other states, see my website at www.geocities.com/jwein0715 which has

Are any of the genners familiar with property listings in Nassau

www.anybirthday.com I was able to determine that a long lost relative
lives in Syosset, NY.
