Re: EIDB Missing Manifests-a reminder #general

To all,

You can also still access the One-Step Website by going to:

http://www.avotaynu.com/ellis.html

The page looks almost like the old wonderful one and you get to choose the
old format and the new format which is more a personal choice than a
research advantage. I have used it successfully since Avoytaynu announced
it a few weeks ago.

Good luck to all.

In response to Marilyn Feingold's note >from yesterday:

"I am told that it's possible to view missing manifests. Now that Steve
Morse's site is down, can someone advise me how to do that? Thanks so
much."

I'd like to remind everyone that you can do this with the help of Alex
Calzareth's web-site:
http://www.geocities.com/alcalz/omold.htm

Your first visual reaction to his wonderful site may be daunting, but
stay with it. It's really not very difficult to figure out and use
successfully. It takes some concentration at first but the more you use
it the easier it gets. And with Steve Morse's site down, other than
going to a NARA facility, it may be the only way to find certain manifests
on- line. I know it has been a big help to me.

Requests for Cemetery Information & Photos #general

Carol Raspler

Dear All:
Most of us no longer live near the cemeteries where our ancestors are
buried and yet we'd love to have detailed information on their plots or
gravestones, etc. I believe it is incumbent upon us to attempt to contact
the cemetery office by telephone (or mail) before asking the group for
help.

Many of the cemeteries around the country still have offices attached and
others are connected to specific synagogues. Many are already
computerized so that one telephone call can answer all your questions.
All contacts and telephone numbers can be found either through
JewishGen.org and/or the individual JGS representing the area. In
particular, the JGSNY has marvelous information for us on metropolitan
cemeteries.

Moreover, many of the cemeteries themselves will now photograph a stone
for you either for a small fee or gratis. We all have work to do.

Regards,
Carol Raspler,

One guess is that "Novargudok" is probably Nowogorodok (=New Town).
Searching for "Novargudok" is apt to prove a frustrating task.

Re: Requesting Lookup in VAB files #southafrica

David Crook <CROOKFAMILY@...>

Dear Anne,

The e-mail address which is supplied by the South African Archives from
which you must have gleaned the information you list below, is all you need
to get the information you are seeking.

I sent an e-mail stating who I am, and how I am related to the person
mentioned. I asked for a copy of the naturalization forms. Since the
originals were too flimsy to photocopy, they sent me a handwritten and
hand-typed copy of the original, which clearly states the dates and town of
my grandfather's birth. It arrived by snail-mail within three weeks, and
there was no charge. It encouraged me to ask for other information, and I
have since found dozens of living people who are important in my life, as a
result of asking the Archival personnel for help. In my own experience, they
are nothing short of amazing!

I would be grateful if someone could look up at the following source in
Bloemfontein the following two references. I am keen to track down my
grandfather, Harry Feldman, and grandmother's (Annie Greenberg's)
Russian roots, so any names and addresses would be tremendous. Harry
came to South Africa via Hull in England, but I have not managed to
trace his presence in Hull.
