Towns or shtetls in Hungary #hungary

SelmaN@...

I found the names of the following towns or shtetls on a Petition for
Naturalization. But I cannot find them on a map, and I'm sure they are
misspelled on the Petition. Can someone give me the correct spellings, and
tell me where the towns are located.

- Komarocz
- Vajkocz
- Ketergeny

Thank you!

Ship manifests for return visits #belarus

Marion Werle <werle@...>

There is no departure information--the record I referred to was, in fact, an
arrival, for the RETURN trip >from the visit to Lithuania. If you check the
manifest indexes, you can often find the same name listed multiple times.
Presumably, some of these are returns >from repeated visits by the same
person (especially if the year and the age increases), although I have never
verified this. In the record I am referring to, the cousin lived in Canada,
and visited her sister in Ukmerge, Lithuania, in 1934. She took a ship
which returned to New York. Her nationality on the manifest is Canadian,
her place of birth shows as Ukmerge, Lithuania, her nearest relative in the
country "whence alien came" shows as her sister, with the name and address
in Ukmerge, her final destination shows as Montreal, Canada, and the "To
join relative or friend" lists the name and address of her two sons in
Montreal. Also, because the record is fairly late, it is typed, and easy to
read.

On the manifest page I have printed, which only has twelve entries, all but
two are NOT U.S. citizens, and the two that are were children traveling with
their mother (a citizen of Hungary). These children have a reference to the
entry to their mother, and shows that they obtained U.S. passports in
Budapest a few weeks earlier. What I don't know is whether the same
information would be listed for an adult who was a naturalized (or native
born) U.S. citizen. If the relative were an alien, the information would
definitely be there, again, for the RETURN trip only. Anybody who moved
back to Europe permanently wouldn't show up. The manifests are immigration
records "At Port of Arrival"--my guess is that the U.S. immigration officers
probably wouldn't care about anybody leaving, except if they were being
deported.

from what I can determine, based on census records, many immigrant
generation ancestors remained aliens and did not bother to become citizens,
so they would be treated as aliens on ship manifests for return visits.
However, I wonder how common it was for people to go back--my direct
ancesters were, without exception, poor, and even if they wanted to,
probably could not have afforded the round trip ship fare!

This bibliography on the JewishGen web site should be of help:

http://www.jewishgen.org/ajgs/bibliography/Pennsylvania.htm

It has 3 citations for Lancaster. You might be able to have your
library do an interlibrary loan.

In addition, try the Lancaster County Historical Society:

http://LanClio.org/

There is also a Lancaster County page of the US GenWeb project, but I
am unable to get it to connect right now, so there may be a problem
with the site, or they may have moved and I don't have the correct
URL. I will try to get that for you as well.

Jimmy Rodgers <pigglet@...>

When I sent my message this morning I never expected to have a response
this soon. I did not even expect to have this much response. I should
have found this sight a long time ago. Thank you to everyone who has
answered me.

I have researched the ellis island sight with all forms of BLASSMAN
spelling to no avail. There are a couple of people but they came from
amsterdam and way off places >from russia.

I have tried naturalization paper work because just about everyone had to
become citizens before finding work. Once again to no avail.

Some one has suggested looking for forms of BLASSMAN with a V instead of a
b. I will definently take everyone's advice and look at all the avenues
that has been sent to me. Laura

Stephen Mednick told me that a URL regarding the Barg genealogy which I gave
early today in my response to Ms. Rodgers' inquiry about Kamenitz Podulskia
[sic] did not work. Please forgive me and try this URL instead:

http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Musee/7075/kamenets.htm

Ms. Rodgers and others interested in Kamenets can also try:

http://www.dvjc.org/history/ukraine.shtml

which is Jewishgenner David Chapin's account of his trip to the Ukraine
during which he visited the "beautifully-preserved city of
"Kamenets-Poldolski."

But, as I said earlier, there are a lot of other websites regarding Kamenets
Podolsky, with various spellings of the name (but not with "podulski."

Also, they may want to read Chapter I of Yehezkel Kotik's Reminiscences at:

http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/Kamenets/kam029.html

in which he describes his native "townlet" "Kamenetz."

Does anyone know how I could find out about a cantor who possibly
arrived in SA >from Lithuania after 1900 (maybe Cape Town)? His name
would have been Eliezer Kress (unless the spelling is off or he changed
his name entirely). Would there possibly be a list of synagogues for
that time that also includes the names of their rabbis and cantors?
