Re: Difficult Research Problems in London #unitedkingdom

Yes, I have also had a problem. I know my paternal grandparents were living
in the UK, had a young child, and also 2 boys >from my GF's first marriage. I
have been unable to find any listings.
I have tried going in with all known versions of my GM's name, as nothing
came up for my GF. The only hit, admittedly with the possibly right names of
mother and child, was with a father's name of Samuel, aged 28. Unfortunatly,
my GF was Isaac, and was in his mid to late 30's at the time, and the
address was not in the same part of the East End that my father knew they
lived in. There is no record of the 2 boys, one of whom was 10 at that time.
Luckily I am going to London next week, and will go to the Family records
office to find some hard data vital records, and will then proceed from
there.

SIG Research Coordindinator #ukraine

Flo Elman

The Ukraine SIG has basically filled all necessary positions with only a
few exceptions. Our primary need now is to appoint someone as our SIG
Research Coordindinator. I would welcome a volunteer at this time!

The research coordinator will be the primary SIG contact with the
Research VP on SIG-sponsored research projects.
The coordinator will identify project leaders for Yad Vashem and USHMM
projects and help recruit volunteers to work on those projects and
assist in monitoring progress. In this role, the coordinator will work
with Rachel Reisman, Holocaust DB technical coordinator.
The coordinator will work with the Research VP on securing permission
for research projects identified by its members and acquiring donor
agreements and volunteer agreements.

The openings for Kharkov Coordinator & Taurida (Crimea) Coordinator are
still available & require someone to lead research groups for these
gubernias.

Please volunteer by contacting me ASAP!

Many thanks,
Florence Elman

Malow/Malon is currently in Ukraine and what it is called? Any help would
be GREATLY appreciated.

"Malo" is a combining form, meaning small. My 1962 Columbia-Lippincott
Gazeteer has no entry for either Malow or Malon in the Ukraine (although
there is a Malon in Spain). I also looked for a "Malov."

But Chester G. Cohen's "Shtetl Finder Gazetteer" has an entry for a
"Malin," which is west of Kiev and northeast of Zhitomir. However,
checking back with the C-L Gazetteer I see it has no entry for Malin.

Mr. Brown should try the "search this website" box at Jewishgen's main
page and try each of the four spellings (Malin, Malon, Malow, Malov0.
Maybe some more information will turn up. He should also check through
Jewishgen's Discussion Group Archives.

The Surname SOSIK #ukraine

Lancy

I have just found out that my husband's ggm's maiden name was
SOSIK. She must have been born in the general area of Southern
Ukraine.

Can anyone give me information as to the origin of the name and
its geographical appearance.

Thank you all

The JewishGen Given Names Database search page is at
<http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/GivenNames/search.htm>.
Search on the right side, "2. FOREIGN-TO-EUROPEAN SEARCH". Select United
States as the foreign country. Selecting Ukraine as the European country
gives only one match, probably because the Ukraine database is still very
small. But if you select the nearby Belarus, Poland, or Galicia as the
European country, you will see many possibilities for the original name.

Naturalization of toddlers #general

phyllis forman <fill4man@...>

My grandmother came to the USA as a toddler, had no memory of any other
country, went to school in Boston, spoke with a thick "Boston accent" -
and she had assumed that she was an American citizen - she assumed that
she became a citizen when her father did. It was *not* the case - afraid
of being deported, during WWII (she was born in "Russia"), she became a
citizen on her own.

It contains two surnames of interest to me, Tropp and Honig, and was sent
to me by someone in the Netherlands who is also related to these surnames,
possibly a cousin. Any help is appreciated. Please respond privately to

To my question if Berel and Bertzik is the same firstname I have got three

have written to them.

My next question is.Can Jurbarkas be the wrong birthplace and should it be Sakiai ?? Perhaps !

MODERATOR'S NOTE: As he mentioned in a previous message, Mr. Rosenstock found that a Gersh Rozenshtok in 1907 was a taxpayer in Jurbarkas: he found Gersh age 30 and his father Judel age 50 and Judels father Bertzig. he also know that his family Rosenstock came >from Sakhi in 1878 to Lund in Sweden.
