Russian Translation and Photographer Stamp
#belarus
Aaron Slotnik
On the back of a photograph affixed to a stiff paper backing is a purple ink
stamp in Russian. I think it is the stamp of the photographer and I would like a translation of what it says. I think the larger part says "G.L. ATLAS". Can anyone confirm this and read the smaller part above? Does this photographer sound familiar to anyone? The picture would have been taken in the area of Grodno, probably Dabrowa Bialostocka, in the early 1900s. You can view a scan of this item here: http://www.geocities.com/ahslot/goldbergisaacleah_200dpi_back.jpg Thanks, Aaron Slotnik Chicago, IL USA WOROSHILSKY - Bialystok area, Poland GOLDBERG - Dabrowa Bialostocka, Poland ZLOTNIK - Warsaw area, Poland BLUMENTHAL, SCHAPIRA - Gusyatin, Gorodenka, Ukraine BLUM, KATZ, MARTON - Salaj and Maramures Counties, Romania

There is a rather good book, I do not recall the author's name, called The Shores
of Refuge. It covers Jewish immigration to the US and details a lot of the pogroms that occured in Odessa and other parts of Russia as well. I was able to get a copy >from my local library (a huge surprise!) so most libraries should have it. It may not answer you very specific questions, but if you are looking to get a very good idea of what life was like this is a good read. Linda Altman - Raleigh, NC Linda Altman - Raleigh, NC researching: ALTMAN, >from Russia to NY City. TYRNAUER >from Hungary. BERGMAN >from Warsaw & Sokolow-Podlaski, Poland to the UK, Israel and US. Does anyone know of a pogram in Kiev city in 1898 approximately? My
G.Grandfather Moishe WEIL of Blessed Memory told other relatives that he witnessed a pogrom in "downtown" Kiev when he was six years old. He said he escaped by hiding in a doorway. His date of birth is 9 September 1892. I don't know off-hand what the Hebrew year was. Thank you, Valerie Bergin Rock Hill, SC WEIL, SOBEL, TUGENTAFT/TUGENDHAFT, ZEITLIN, STRASSFELD/STRASFELD, CHUDNER

I'm trying to locate a list and map of the Uyezds that used to exist
in Ukraine and their modern day counterparts, the Rayons, along with the Guberniyas and Oblasts to which they belong. I've tried a Google search, but have come up with too many false hits. Do any of you know where such a list or lists exist? Ron Doctor rondoctor@earthlink.net Portland, Oregon

<< Dears all: I have two questions for my investigation. Perhaps somebody can help me: I need to know if there were "pogroms" in the city of Odesa between the years 1899 and 1908/9. (it dates approximate of my grandfather's escape JANKL MEIER SCHOR).I need to know if in Odessa a Jewish neighborhood existed between 1899 and 1908/9. If it is this way, I need to know if the street PREOBRAZHENSKAYA was part of that neighborhood. >> Descriptions of pogroms that occurred in Odessa in 1821, 1859, 1871, 1881, and 1905 can be found at: http://www.moria.farlep.net/vjodessa/en/pogroms.html The one in which Ms. Sor is interested was not confined primarily in the Moldavanka district where many poor Jews lived. This one was city-wide, and it started in the city's center, so it most likely included Preobrazhenskaya Street, which was one of Odessa's major streets. And yes, the Moldavanka district still existed in 1905. Those of you who are interested in Odessa's history should read: Patricia Herlihy, "Odessa: A History: 1794-1914" Harvard University Press, 1986. A fuller description of the 1905 pogrom than that given on the above website can be found on pages 304-308. Steven J. Zipperstein, "A Cultural History, 1794-1881," Stanford University Press, 1986 Also, the essay "Remapping Odessa" should be read in Steven J. Zipperstein, "Imagining Russia Jewry: Memory History, Identity," University of Wisconsin Press, 1999. Incidentally, the name of the city is often spelled with only one "s." so people who like to do websearches should try both spellings (Odessa, and Odesa). Also my websearch for "Preobrazhenskaya Street, Odessa" turned up a site at: http://www.artukraine.com/photoart/photstudio2.htm which shows three charming "cabinet" postcard photographs of a pair of young girls, a father with his daughters, and a young couple in "exotic" costume, with the names of the photographers and their addresses displayed on the photographs' reverse side.
