Hello Belarus-siggers,
I'm trying to locate a shtetl/village for a friend
whose grandmother came >from a place called "Omert." I
have an idea that was a shortened version, a Yiddish
version, or something of that sort. Has anyone heard
of it?
Please reply privately.
Thank you, as always.

Book by Dr. Isaac Lewis, Pub. #rabbinic

Nancy Holden

Can somebody help identify this book and, perhaps, a library that
holds it - (The only description I have is this):

"...there's a major (Hebrew) piece on the last Rabbi of Swislocz in
one of the Eile Ezkero volumes - a set published by Dr. Isaac Lewis
around 40 years ago to ensure an ongoing record of many rabbinic
Holocaust martyrs and their communities..."

Thank you,

Dear group,
While relaxing today, I perused the online auction listings. For sale
is a book, Yiddish Theatre and Jacob Adler. The auction has several
days yet to run.
I thought one of you might be interested in it; I'm not. The URL is (be
sure to copy the entire URL if it's split onto two lines)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1555189095

Note: By doing a keyword search for <Yiddish>, I also found a photo of
the Yiddish National Theatre in NYC available.

Moderator Notes:
The author, Lulla Adler Rosenfeld, has published no less than 3 books
related to the Yiddish actor Jacob P. Adler. The book referred to above
is an updated publication of the hardback book entitled "Bright Star of
Exile, Jacob Adler and the Yiddish Theater". The most recent book,
"Jacob Adler, A Life on the Stage", is Ms Rosenfeld's translation of
Jacob Adler's Memoirs.

Toronto meeting--East and West Prussian BOF #germany

DWSAnes@...

At the recently completed IAJGS meeting in Toronto, fifteen of us gathered as
a BOF (Birds of a Feather, that is those with a common interest) interested
in the Prussias, East and West as well as Pommerania. It was decided to
form an informal group within Ger-Sig and I was drafted to coordinate the
project. I invite anyone interested in this area to write to me at the
address below. Please include places and family names and I shall add your
name to our mailing list.

As a point of interest most of this area is currently in Poland and some in
Russia; however, it is primarily German speaking, thus Ger-Sig. We shall
probably be doing some work with the JRI Poland project.

Re: Corcisco, Latvia? #latvia

Marj Green <marjgreen@...>

Thank you so much, John Cakers, for your incredible detective work
to help identify Corcisco, Latvia.

Using maps showing the railway system in Latvia in 1914 to suggest
that the town is Karsava, Latvia was a brilliant idea. Since the
spelling of the name of the town was typed by someone who was listening
to a taped interview with Beila Feigelson in 1980 in Birmingham, Alabama,
and the event Beila was recalling occurred around 1914, I think it very
likely that the spelling chosen was quite different >from the actual town name.

Thank you again for your help.

Ternovska vital records ? #ukraine

Goulnik, Yves {PBC~Basel}

I recently learnt that before moving to Odessa in the early 1900s,
my g-g-parents lived in Ternovska, a small town NE of Bershad in
the Vinnytsya area.

Is there any chance that vital records would still exist for that
town, and were would they be kept? Bershad, Vinnytsya?

Thanks

What is a farible #general

Anita Fischer

A " farible" is what a person has when you don't invite them to the
wedding, party or event that everyone else is going to. I first heard
it in South Africa when the widow of my father's cousin was not invited
to my sons wedding.(The bride's family did not realize how big a family
the Canadian groom had in South Africa and so had to leave out the widow)
She would not speak to my father even though she had not seen him for
over 50 years. She had a "farible" against him.
I think it is a Yiddish Litvack expression.

Anita Fischer
