Name changes #general

Dorothy Kohanski <dkohanski@...>

Name changes, some very strange, also can show up on
US Census. My mother, clearly Adele on the Vienna
birth record, shows up as "Matilda" on the US census.
And my uncle Emil, is listed as Emily - girl, on the
same census!! Maybe some ignorant neighbor gave the
information??

Why not "Linda" for Sheindel, in English?

Israel & Clara <iczamir@...>

Until to day, a lot of jews >from Russia Poland and so
are using the female name Clara
(like Claire in French...).

In numerous cases the :"Clara" name is standing for
the hebreww "Chaia" or Yiddish "Chaie".
In less numbers it is standing for "Chava" (hehbrew)
or "Chave" in Yiddish

My mother always thought that her mother's name was Miriam Clara because
relatives called her Clara. Imagine her surprise when she found out that
her
name was Miriam Evelyn. We still don't know why she was called Clara.

Jewish agricultural collectives in Russia #ciechanow #poland

Marty Meyers <meyers01@...>

Hi,

Can someone tell me about Jewish agricultural collectives in Russia or
point me to a reference?

Does anyone know about one in Karniewo, near Ciechanow/Pultusk north of Warsaw?
I've heard it an elderly relative, born near there, refer to it as an a
Jewish agricultural kibbutz.
The little I know is that there were very few Jews (< 50) and that a
relative owned a
flour mill and bought/processed grain >from local farmers.

I'm interested in both specific information about Karniewo as well as
general information
about Jewish agricultural collectives.

Thanks,

Marty Meyers

Is any one here familiar with the Naveridker Brother's Society?? I have a
relative buried in the society's plot in the Washington Cemetery
