Ellen Renck has asked me to post her message because she is having trouble
with her AOL service. I would also like to add that the SIG leadership
encourages the posting of messages on the Belarus SIG discussion group
rather then using other lists that are specific to Belarus shtetl or
District. There are many reasons for this position:
1. Jewish families moved for economic and other reasons and branches of the
same family can be found in different shtetls and districts (uezds).
2. We learn >from each other. Research techniques and archival information at
applicable to most shtetls and uezds within what is now Belarus.
3. Messages posted to the Belarus SIG are archived and can be easily
searched by using http://www.jewishgen.org/wconnect/wc.isa?jg~jgsys~sigspop.
If you haven't tried it, you should.

Barbara was a member of our group because no other existed for

Ms Arnold,

We Jews have long ago lost any tribal affiliation (i.e., the twelve tribes).
We are mainly descended >from the kingdom of Judaea, which consisted of Judah
and Benjamin with a few members of the other ten tribes picked up along the
way.

The only other tribe that kept its identity was the tribe of Levi whose
descendants were Kohanim and Levites and often have that identity in their
family names today.

Sorry, but I doubt if you will get back further than the middle ages in
Europe.

Best regards,
Dan Nussbaum

the end of the Riga ghetto #latvia

Ed Sternin <edik@...>

When I asked this question in Toronto, at a recently concluded conference,
a speaker sent me to the JewishGen site where "everyting is there". I
reviewed it once again, and did not find the answer. So I would like to
ask of the entire SIG.

The time is spring 1944; Riga ghetto is pretty much gone, Mezhaparks
(Kaiserwald) camp is being closed up, with rail transports out to
Stutthof, and some killings in the Bikernieku forest (although the
majority of those had already happened in 1942-3, as the Big ghetto was
emptied). Apparently the loading onto rail transport takes place at the
Zasulauks train station, just outside Riga. This is a LOOONG march from
Mezhaparks, by the way.

Eventually, the Red Army overruns the german defences, and a large german
army group is cut off in Kurzeme, where some german resistance continues
for many months. The only route out is by sea >from Liepaja (Libava,
Libau).

Dundaga camp (in Kurzeme, near Valdemarpils) is also being emptied; the
remaining prisoners are marched towards Riga, presumably to be sent to
Stutthof; many die along the way. There is a recent account of the final
march, which runs into the front line and is abandoned by the germans to
the oncoming Red Army.

Now the questions: were the germans more successful in liquidating the
remaining Jews of Riga? Did all of them get shipped out to Stutthof, or
killed on the spot? Did any end up in Kurzeme with the surrounded german
troops, and even perhaps got shipped out to Germany >from Liepaja? [hard to
imagine, but it's a pretty short sea voyage, and the germans may have
needed some slaves to help evacuate their army by sea]

As far as I know, there are very few records >from Riga, although Peter
Lande reported recently that some survivor lists for Riga do exist (I do
not know which records these are). There are some transport records into
Stutthof in a recently acquired USHMM collection of 189 rolls of film.
As far as I know, none of it is accessible electronically.

If there are any experts on Kurzeme (in 1944-45) out there, or anyone who
knows something about the timeline of the above events, or some other
details, >from their personal research, I would love to hear whatever you
know!

Thanks.

PS I think both Riga and Stutthof pages on JewishGen would benefit from
some expanding; the current content is very limited, and a lot more is
known by the members of this SIG, judging >from what I have seen here in
the maillist.
