List of family names from Lubaczow #galicia

Eva Floersheim <evaflor@...>

Remembering the Jews of Lubaczow http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org is
commemorating a Jewish community that had a maximum of 2000 members before
the Holocaust. Lubaczow is today a small town in the south eastern corner of
Poland, close to the Ukrainian border.

Most of the material at the website probably has most interest for those
with known roots in Lubaczow.

Today I have added a list of around 330 of the family names I have found
over the years, connected to Lubaczow. These were found in telephone books,
business directories, Pages of Testimony, Yizkor list, list of members of
the Landsmannschaft for Lubaczow that once existed here in Israel, etc.

This list, which may be of interest for a wider group particularly in nearby
shtetlach , can be found on
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/lubaczow/familynames.htm

Please you nice people out there... I have no problem with the first part
of the name on the stone:

Lazar ben Yitzhak ( but it's followed by) " vov + shin + resh + Heh "
something I'm not familiar with.

Strahlheim, Silesia #ukraine

Arnold Chamove <A.S.Chamove@...>

I have been told there was a Strahlheim in Silesia, and I have ancestors
from there. But I have had a look for Strahlheim on the WWW and in new and
old maps but cant find it. Can anyone tell me where it might be, near what
town? The closest I can find is Strehlen.

ANAPOLSKY from Ekaterinoslav #ukraine

Richard Cooper <ric@...>

I am trying to trace the descendants of Gersch & Czerne ANAPOLSKY >from
Ekaterinoslav who arrived in New York on the 'Estonia' out of Libau on
January 12 1909 with their younger children: Sara (14), Velvel (10),
Breina (8) and Marianne (5).Their passage was paid for by an older daughter
(unnamed) living at 873 Cross Street, Philadelphia, PA.
I am especially trying to link them to Nikolai & Alexandra ANAPOLSKY, a
married couple both born around 1905 and living in Ekaterinoslav, whose
descendants still live in Russia.

All suggestions gratefully received - TIA!

"People's School" #lithuania

Anna Olswanger <anna.olswanger@...>

In researching the town of Varniai in Lithuania, a translator
provided this description of the town >from Slownik Geograficzny
Krolestwa Polskiego i Innych Krajow Slowianskich [Geographical
Dictionary of the Kingdom of Poland and Other Slavonic
Countries], published in 1880:

Varniai had 19 houses, 205 inhabitants, a [Russian Orthodox]
church, 8 Catholic churches, 3 synagogues, a people's school, a
post and telegraph office, 49 stores, and a few small industries.
Market days were every Tuesday and Friday. Fairs (bazaars) were
held on March 19, June 27, and September 8.

Does anyone know what the term "people's school" means?

Thanks if you can help.

researching: KIRZNER/BAYLIN from Slavuta/Volhynia region #ukraine

Marty Meyers <meyers01@...>

Hi,

I'm new to the Ukraine group but have spent the last two years digging into
JRI-Poland databases, etc. I can only hope I'll be half as successful in
this part of Russia.

I have just this past week found my great-grandfather's naturalization
which says that he was >from Slavuta in Volhynia. Here is what I know:

My great-grandfather was Solomon KIRZNER (I'm guessing at the spelling
since this is how my mother tells me it sounded, they used the name
KITCHENER while stopping over in Leeds, and they changed the name to
SIDMAN in the US-taking the name of his best friend Sam SIDMAN, also >from
Slavuta). His wife was Minnie BAYLIN. His mother was Sophie BAYLIN.

His best friend Sam SIDMAN's wife was Sarah BAYLIN and Sam's mother was
Celia BAYLIN. So the BAYLIN's are pretty well entwined with KIRZNER and
SIDMAN.

Has anyone had success getting records >from the Slavuta region?
Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Thanks,

Marty Meyers

On October 25 I sent a private message to David Sebba on how to
donate his Stepan photos to The JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial
Registry (JOWBR), which the moderator neglected to mention in posting
David's original message.

There was a posting a few days prior to David's original message
about JOWBR's translation team, which can translate tombstone
transcriptions for inclusion in JOWBR. All instructions, forms, and
template for JOWBR are at
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/cemetery/.

David should reply to me privately with any questions he has.

I am trying to find mid-19th century civil or Jewish records for Tharandt,
Germany, which is in Saxony and near Dresden. Does anyone know who I can

1857/58.

Jewish names based oi location #germany

I do not dispute that many Jewish names in Germany were based on place-
names with which the person was associated but in my own family I have
found some hard-to explain family names.

My ggf, Leib SPEIER (which is already a place name, though the Speiers
came >from Hof), wrote in the "Family Book" in 1872 that he took the name
HOLSTEIN, though the family; lived near Kassel and had no apparent
connection with the province of Holstein.

Leib Speier-Holstein also traces his ancestry to the PLAUT family of
Neuenbrunslar, which again is not near Schleswig-Holstein.

Another mystery regarding the "taking" of additional names are the various
descendants of Josef Plaut who added names such as Dannenberg, Stern and
Koenig to the Plaut name.

Often the original name (Plaut, Speier) was dropped and only the newer
name retained by future generations.

Searching HOLSTEIN or SPEIER-HOLSTEIN (Neuenbrunslar, Gensungen),
SPEIER or SPEYER (Hof or Hoof), KAHN (Alsace, Belgium),
