Help with locations in East Prussia/Lithuania #germany

M. Faber <mfaber@...>

I just got off the phone with a relative that gave me some interesting
information but nothing I can pinpoint. I'm hoping that you all can help.

My GG Aunt was supposed to be >from Hedecruk near Leipzig in East Prussia.
She met her husband, who's family were shingledeckers, when he was looking
at trees. His family was >from Tavriz in/near Kovno, Lithuania. My GG Aunt
always claimed her mother was German.

I've been unable to determine what communities they are referring to using
Shtetl Seeker. Does anyone recognize these shtetls? Also, when my GG Aunt
and her father arrived in 1904 (at Ellis Island), they listed Akrnauschken,
Germany as their last place of residence. Does anyone recognize this
location? Thanks for any and all help in advance.

Does anyone know the original name of the family of Sen WELLSTONE of

The father of Senator WELLSTONE was the Russsian Jewish immigrant Leon
WEXELSTEIN. The surname WEXELSTEIN (or the phonetically identical
WECHSELSTEIN) is of German respectively Yiddish origin. There are some
rocks in Germany with the name "Wechselstein".

It also may be that this surname has something to do with "wechseln"
(to change, especially money changing).

“This is a conundrum. How can one brother be raised Orthodox
Jew (as well as being a Kohane) and the other Roman Catholic?”

It was pretty common, I think, to ‘fudge’ an ancestor’s
religion when he/she converted. Especially during Hitler’s time,
it could be worth your life to do so-and before that there would
have been social reasons to do so.

I know a woman who has a picture of her gr grandfather wearing
a yamulka (he was bald and his head was cold all the time) and
with a typically Jewish candelabra in the background (before
electricity everyone used candles), but her parents deny the man
was Jewish.

Just wanted to compliment and recommend the JGFF Alert. It's a
wonderful service - after becoming a part of it, I received my
first notification within a week. Very exciting and although it
didn't prove to be a new lead, it did put me back in contact
with someone whom I had been in touch with in the past. We will
continue to search for the connection that probably exists between
our families. Thanks again for the great service!

2 New ShtetLink Sites - Lipany, Slov./Dynow, Po. #general

Debbie Raff

This is to announce the birth of 2 new ShtetLink sites.

Lipany, Slovakia (formerly Hethars, Hungary)
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Lipany

Dynow, Poland
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Dynow

They are both works in progress, so if you have information
on either town, please feel free to drop me a line.

For those out there considering setting up a site for your
town of interest, take the plunge. It is amazingly simple
and there are folks willing to help.

It was only yesterday that I was thinking about it, and
today I am the 'mom' of triplets! (3 ShtetLink sites) ;-)

Hebrew Dates (For Cemetery Transcriptions) #poland

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>

I am involved in a lengthy project to record the information >from the
tombstones in all of the cemeteries in towns near Radomsko and Czestochowa
(Poland) where my TELMAN and ENGLENDER families lived.

In May of this year, I took over 1000 digital photographs of the tombstones
in these towns:

Zarki (many, many hundreds)
Przyrow (none)
Plawno/Gidle (very few)
Janow (a few dozen)
Mstow (very few)

Taking the photographs took about 15 hours. Jeff Cymbler has now finished
transcribing/transliterating the contents of each and every tombstone. (And
surely his work took far longer than mine!) Leah Jordan Bisel typed up all
of the information--more than a thousands lines of typing!

We now have a long list of Hebrew dates. A few months ago, a JewishGenner
"magically" converted a list of several hundred Hebrew dates into non-Hebrew
dates. He did it so fast and wonderfully that I did not have time to
ponder, "When will Mr.... finish?" Alas, I have now forgotten who did this
for me! Please let me know if you have the ability to take a long list of
Hebrew dates (several hundred) and convert them to non-Hebrew dates. (In
other words, I want to avoid the need to look up each one or enter each one
into some type of on-the-web conversion program.)
