Translations Requested #lodz #poland

Ruth Leigh <ruthleigh@...>

Further to my message of Wednesday, I am delighted to report that I received
a wealth of translations of the Hebrew Tombstone which I posted to Viewmate.
It is wonderful to find so many helpful people >from all over the US and
Israel!.

However, as yet, no one has responded to any of the 3 Polish handwritten
certificates..a birth, marriage, and death certificate. These are posted at
Viewmate, link below, as documents: VM 1914, VM 1915, and VM 1916. I do not
expect a full translation, but would be grateful for the names, of
principals and witnesses, relationships mentioned, dates and locations of
the events.

http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html

Please send any information and replies directly to me.
Thank you.

Searching Descendants of Max HELLMAN #belarus

rlberliner@...

I am posting this for cousins who are great grandchildren of Max HELLMAN.
Annie JACOBS, his wife, was my aunt.

We believe Max came >from Latvia as the census taker wrote he was >from Riga.
His parents were Samuel and Augusta HELLMAN.
He was married to Annie JACOBS who was born in England and was the daughter
of Joseph and Rachel JACOBS. Her family first migrated >from London to
Baltimore, MD .Max & Annie migrated >from New York or Baltimore to Atlanta,
GA.
Max had a sister whose name according to family lore was Mary Birkhan* and
she lived in the Bronx, NY at one time.
Mary's daughter was Gussie FRIEBERG.
Gussie's daughter, Ruth, married a Dr. FOX.
Gussie also had a son, Milton FRIEBERG.
There was a Rabbi FRIEBERG in Bay Ridge in Brooklyn whose niece may have
been related to the HELLMAN family.
There are supposedly additional nieces of Max HELLMAN who once resided in
the East New York area of Brooklyn.

Max HELLMAN was born in 1862 and married Annie JACOBS 11/14/1886. He died in
Atlanta, GA on 12/27/1935 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Atlanta.
Facts >from his obituary were printed as follows:
1. He was a tailor who had emigrated >from Russia
2. He was prominent in local Jewish affairs.
3. Two daughters: Miss Frances HELLMAN and Mrs.
(Leah) Nathan WOLFF (NYC)
4. 4 sons: Abraham Joseph ("Abe") HELLMAN of
Chester, S.C.; Jacob J. ("Jim") HELLMAN of
Atlanta,
Elias and William HELLMAN of Spring Valley, N.Y.
5. One sister: Mrs. Mary BICKHANN*, NYC
* Mary's surname could also have been BIRKHAN(N) and/or Mary FINEBERG.

Thanks in advance to all who may be able to help us find Uncle Max HELLMAN's
descendants and any other helpful information.

Jewish birth records 1850's, Poznan #poland

Mimi Katz <GeveretK@...>

I believe that my ggm, Sarah ISAACS LANDO (daughter of Isaac ISAACS) was
born in Poznan in 1853. I would like to find her birth record. I'm not
sure if she was actually born in the town of Poznan or in the district of
Poznan. I searched the JRI-PL database and didn't find anything. I also
looked at the LDS website and found an overwhelming amount of civil register
films, but they don't seem to have many birth records. Can anyone offer a
suggestion that would point me in the right direction?

Can anyone recommend an English speaking researcher who lives in the Poznan
area, who corresponds via email?

Please reply privately.
Thanks much,
Mimi Katz, Chicago

the Jewish Hour - on CD? #general

jerome schatten

Genners:

If my memory serves me well, in the late 30's or early
40's I can remember Sunday afternoons in NYC listening
to 'The Jewish Hour' with my father and gf. It was in
Yiddish and had a musical introduction. Can anyone remember
the NYC radio station (network) that carried the programme
and/or what the music was?

I've been told that there is now a CD with some of the 1930's
programming; can someone verify this and suggest who is
carrying this item?

TIA and Shalom,

Re: Translation Needed for Yiddish or Russian 3 Words #general

Mark Grekin <markgrekin@...>

Hi Deborah,

Kustarnichestvo = primitive/amateurish work producing
handcraft wares at one's home. A person doing this is
named "kustar' ". Usually "kustar' " had several teenage
apprentices.

Reactionary-podpevatelyami = Reactionary yes-men. For
example, all men in Saddam Hussein ruling cabinet(Iraq)
are his yes-men (podpevateli) being afraid to speak out
their own opinion.

Kazuistika, see English word "casuistic" or "casuistry"
- subtle but misleading or false reasoning, esp. about
moral issues.

gilberg/gilbert/gelberd family #lithuania

danielle freedman <daniellefreedman640@...>

I have never posted this surname before, - but hope you can help me.
My gg grandma - JAYNE GILBERG married Israel Pasersky in Manchester in 1874. She was aged 21 B: 1853. She came >from VILCOVIKS/VILNA/VOLKAVITCH, she came to the UK manchester aged 11 with her older brother Charlie - who was in the jewlary business. They left there parents back home, and lived with her aunt & uncle in Fernie Street. Her Aunt was called Betsey & uncle was called Barnet - they had 5 children - Annie, Meyer, Harris, Simon, Sofia. There was also a Marks Gilberg who lived next door married to Zetta he was born in 1819.

Does this family name mean anything to anyone - all this info is on the 1881 census it says there were >from Poland. Was VILCOVITCH in Poland? or is this another family.
