Burial sites in Wash DC and B alt for circa 1900 #general

ourabey@...

Can anyone offer advice on how to find older cemeteries. My gggm died in
Wash or Balt circa 1900. I have consulted the DC Jewish Historical
Society and researched the list of older gravestones to no avail. How
can I find the older cemeteries? The list provided by my genealogical
society is not up to date with phone numbers too old to be helpful and no
way to track anyone down. Thanks for any suggestions. A cousin tried
to find the death certificate to get a date but that has not be
successful either, and after a while it can get quite costly paying for
various records searches.

1901 UK Census #general

Aubrey Jacobus <marie@...>

I have found several instances on 1901 Census RG 13/298 Spitalfields
London where the enumerator has added 'Jew' in brackets after
Dutch and German nationals - but curiously not after Polish and
Russian - perhaps he thought it was sufficiently obvious in those cases !!!

I also find that Litvaks born c 1860 are listed as German - why ?

Searching for the descendants of Abraham and Helen FERNAND #general

Primpark@...

I am currently trying to locate the descendants of two people called
Abraham and Helen FERNAND.

Abraham was born in Lublin, Poland, on October 1, 1914 (or possibly 1918),
son of Aron and Sophie (Szprynca) FERNAND, and he died in New York on June
2, 1981. Sophie died in New York on December 27, 1987, at the age of 100,
according to her gravestone. Abraham's brother, Joseph, was born in 1908,
probably also in Lublin, and he died in New Jersey on July 8, 1981. To the
best of my knowledge, Joseph never married.

All these people are buried in the Lubliner section of Beth David
Cemetery, Elmont, Long Island, NY. I would be very pleased to hear >from
anyone who may have information on Abraham and Helen's descendants - or
any other members of the FERNAND family.

Many thanks for your help - and please respond privately.

Biblical father & son sharing same name #general

LeslieReich <lreich@...>

Lawrence King <lking@math.washington.edu> inquired:

"Isaac Asimov claimed this custom went back to Biblical
times, but apparently he was wrong. Yet are there any instances in
the Scriptures where someone was given their father's name?.........."

The only instance that of which I am aware is Baladon son of Baladon,
found in Kings II, 20:12. But he was a Babylonian king, not Jewish.

Previous to his death, but after his stroke, I sat my father down for the
family history. I've recently revived it to try to find some of these
folks. He tells that his father took a ship >from Hamburg to Montreal - any
knowledge about this as a route of immigration?

Thank you.
